MultiBrief: Issues in assessing ESL students - 0 views

  •
Short, interesting article on assessing students. I found this particularly interesting -- didn't know that about Saudi students. "Oral exams - common in some courses - may present a challenge to both students and instructors. Wait time after the question may be longer than expected for Asian students, who are showing respect, while Saudi students may give a quick answer, which is a sign of strength."

Pro Tips: How to Study on Vimeo - 0 views

  •
Short video (5 minutes) with study tips. Not necessarily new but I got some ideas about activities that have students "teach" the material. Level 5 & Level 6 students might be able to watch and understand. Would be a good session intro video / ideas to work into (I know, we tell these to our students 100 times and they don't listen...maybe if they see a video on it from someone else & then is teacher reinforced, it might stick better?)

Vocabulary Strategies - Learning Tasks - 0 views

Excellent ideas for helping students retain vocabulary. Some are content specific (i.e., scientific words) and yes, I think adult students are past coloring :-), but there are other options in here which would work with adult students.

Do students need to learn lower-level factual and procedural knowledge before... - 0 views

Written for native speaking students but I think it applies to ESL as well. It's easy as ESL teacher, especially teaching the lower levels, to think that students can't think critically because they don't have the language skills.

Students' own responses from their high school survey. The common thread is "hands on" and "material relates to their own lives". Think there are insights here for ESL students as well.

Very interesting post about experiencing classes from the student point of view. I wish we (myself included) were able to do this...even with doing classroom observation I have learned about the importance of breaks, no matter how engaging the lesson is

FrazeIt in English - Write Good Sentences - 1 views

A very, very cool site -- suggested by Mike, thank you! -- that allows students to look up a vocabulary word and get various perspectives -- definitions, example sentences, and best of all -- pictures, even for abstract words (I used "attitude" as my test word). Great resource for higher level students.

Understanding The Value Of What Students Don't Know - 1 views

  •
A well considered piece on the value of "not knowing" and how teachers can leverage this into a positive, rather than a negative. Looks at the need for students to understand the value of connecting to the information, rather than learning simple because it's expected.
