More testing shows continued failure of 'no-name' cable - Cabling Installation & Mainte... - 0 views

  • Another round of electrical- and fire-safety performance testing, commissioned by the Communications Cable and Connectivity Association (CCCA) and conducted on cable brands that are largely unknown in North America, has yielded similar results to previous testing. Namely, five of six samples tested failed to meet the minimum National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code requirements for low flame spread and/or smoke generation for installation in commercial buildings, schools and multi-tenant residences.

Guidance for landlords : Electrical Safety Council - 0 views

  • As the number of people becoming landlords soars, research from the Electrical Safety Council has found that misunderstandings between landlords and tenants over responsibilities for safety are exposing many people to life-threatening electrical dangers. The ESC is concerned that the rise in inexperienced landlords - many of whom are finding it easier to rent out their property than sell it - will further compromise safety. The consequences for not understanding obligations can be serious. If a landlord is found to be negligent over electrical safety it can lead to fines or even imprisonment. Our guidance for landlords outlines the simple steps you can take to ensure the electrical safety of your properties.

Elderly warned over aged appliances : National : DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE (The Daily Yomiuri) - 0 views

  • Because many users of such aged appliances are elderly, the ministry had to think of an effective way to warn them of the dangers of using electrical appliances far beyond their service life. The medium the ministry chose was the kairanban circular notice, a traditional system of passing information from house to house in a neighborhood in which an advisory flyer is attached to a clipboard and passed among residents, who stamp it with their seal or sign it to indicate they have read it. The ministry has distributed 3.5 million flyers to local governments so they can be circulated right away. About 50 million households are expected to see the flyer.

Seniors Fire Safety « Gokentuckyhomes's Weblog - 0 views

  • The fire death rate among people over the age of 65 is twice as high as the national average, according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA). In addition, the fire death rate among people between ages 75 and 85 is three times the national average and after age 85, it increases to four times the national average. These statistics are especially alarming when researchers estimate that by 2030, the 65 and older population will exceed 70 million people.

Defective cable recall from educational facility - 0 views

  • A significant quantity of sub-standard cable purporting to be CCA Cat 5e cable has been removed from an educational establishment in the Isle of Man following an investigation by the Approved Cables Initiative (ACI).
  • The ACI brought the issue of misselling data cable (Cat5e/Cat6) with Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA) to the attention of electrical contractors last year. Such cables are non-compliant with published national and international standards and although they don’t present a safety risk, the fact they do not perform properly will inevitably damage a contractor’s reputation.

News Wales > Community > Fire deaths fall - 0 views

  • The United Kingdom Fire and Rescue Services attended 876,300 fire and false alarm incidents in the 12 months to 30 September 2006 - a slight increase on the previous 12 months. There were 482 fire deaths in this period - down 1% on the previous 12 months. Dwelling fire deaths fell by 9% to 342, the lowest total since records began. However, all fire death figures for 2006 should be treated with caution as they are still provisional and subject to change. Primary fires fell by 5% to 162,000. This is the lowest total since 1985. Within this dwelling fires hit a 25 year low (56,400, down 2%), fires in other buildings - including workplaces and areas where people gather - are at their lowest since 1963 (down 7% to 33,200) and road vehicle fires again fell (by 9% to 60,600) to their lowest total since 1990. Secondary fires rose by 6% to 267,100 as there was a large increase in grassland fires (37%). These fires are closely linked to temperature, with July 2006 being the hottest July on record. Attendances at false alarms dropped by 1% to 436,500. Within this there was a 15% fall in malicious false alarms and a slight decrease in false alarms due to apparatus.
