Written question - Holistic approach to addressing fire safety at EU level by developin... - 0 views

  • The Commission is working on a number of issues that could have an adverse effect on the fire safety of buildings and occupants. Almost one-third of its Directorates-General deal with different legislation or have responsibilities that affect fire safety. The Commission should pursue a coordinated approach to fire safety in the EU by developing a fire safety strategy which would enable Member States to exchange data and best practices, and set out a vision for fire safety in the EU. What is the Commission planning to do to tackle fire safety? The Commission has in the past acted on safety issues subject to subsidiarity, such as road safety, and has achieved excellent results. Why does it not take similar action in the case of fire safety? Policies such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) can have a tremendous impact on fire safety. Will the Commission ensure that the sustainable buildings of the future are also resilient to fire by including fire safety provisions?

Fire safety: what can building renovations bring? - Modern Building Alliance - 0 views

  • Therefore, the Modern Building Alliance supports the idea suggested by the European Copper Institute and the Federation for the Safety of Electricity Users (Fisuel) that fire and electrical safety should be part of the social dimension of EU energy policy, and be addressed together with energy poverty.

Guidance for landlords : Electrical Safety Council - 0 views

  • As the number of people becoming landlords soars, research from the Electrical Safety Council has found that misunderstandings between landlords and tenants over responsibilities for safety are exposing many people to life-threatening electrical dangers. The ESC is concerned that the rise in inexperienced landlords - many of whom are finding it easier to rent out their property than sell it - will further compromise safety. The consequences for not understanding obligations can be serious. If a landlord is found to be negligent over electrical safety it can lead to fines or even imprisonment. Our guidance for landlords outlines the simple steps you can take to ensure the electrical safety of your properties.

  • The fire death rate among people over the age of 65 is twice as high as the national average, according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA). In addition, the fire death rate among people between ages 75 and 85 is three times the national average and after age 85, it increases to four times the national average. These statistics are especially alarming when researchers estimate that by 2030, the 65 and older population will exceed 70 million people.

UK building regulation changes - 0 views

  • Set against this there are a number of key areas where we want to explore the potential for deregulation and streamlining of the existing provisions. In particular, representations made to Government demonstrate concern with the costs imposed on electricians by part P (electrical safety—dwellings). We believe it is now time to evaluate the building regulations’ contribution to the safety outcomes they were intended to support and, if we are to retain regulation of this kind, how we might minimise the associated costs.
  • The programme I am setting out today has been arrived at after active engagement with our external partners. A key theme to emerge from this process has been that these partners believe that although the regime is generally fit for purpose, there are things we can improve. This confirms the Department’s belief that the building regulations should remain the national minimum standard that building work should comply with. While much of the programme of work is deregulatory in nature, it will, however, include work to deliver our commitment to increase energy efficiency through part L (conservation of fuel and power). This will represent our next steps towards zero-carbon buildings and will also provide an opportunity to consider provisions for the existing stock in the light of the Government’s emerging policies on reducing carbon emissions, including the green deal. We will also explore how better to ensure high levels of compliance.

Overheating devices - 0 views

  • 1. Immediately report any suspected electrical problems, such as devices that seem to be overly warm, cracked cords, loose plugs, and broken wiring devices. Contact your Division Safety Coordinator, Facilities Electricians, or EHS Electrical Safety Engineer at ext. 4694.2. Electrical problems are not always revealed at the time of the installation. It can take months or years before an improper connection begins to fail. 3. Beware of overloading receptacles, plug strips, and circuits by plugging in too much equipment. A circuit breaker will not trip immediately when overloaded. Wire can overheat well before a breaker trips.

HINTS FOR HOMEOWNERS - 0 views

  • Every year, electrical fires result in thousands of injuries, hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and, in some cases, even death. While some fires are caused by faulty products, many more are caused by the misuse and poor maintenance of electrical equipment, incorrectly installed wiring, overloaded circuits and misapplied extension cords. Smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and escape ladders are all examples of emergency equipment used in homes to take action when a fire occurs. A device called an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter, or AFCI, is a residential circuit breaker designed to detect arcing faults and thus prevent fires from occurring in the first place. Arcing can occur when you're hanging a picture and inadvertently pierce a wire in the wall, when old wires fray or when you string extension cords together to run fans or space heaters. Approximately 2,300 injuries, 67,800 fires and 485 deaths occur each year that can be associated with home wiring, totaling $868 million in property losses. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that "AFCI devices may address 50 percent or more of these fires."

ESFI Encourages Consumers to Install AFCIs - - insurancenewsnet.com - 0 views

  • According to the U.S. Fire Administration,* home electrical problems accounted for an estimated 67,800 fires and $868 million in property losses in 2003. Electrical fires also cause an estimated 485 deaths annually and injure almost 2,300 more individuals. For this reason, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) suggests that homeowners consider installing AFCI protection in general purpose circuits throughout the home.
