The Commission is working on a number of issues that could have an adverse effect on the fire safety of buildings and occupants. Almost one-third of its Directorates-General deal with different legislation or have responsibilities that affect fire safety.
The Commission should pursue a coordinated approach to fire safety in the EU by developing a fire safety strategy which would enable Member States to exchange data and best practices, and set out a vision for fire safety in the EU.

Policies such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) can have a tremendous impact on fire safety. Will the Commission ensure that the sustainable buildings of the future are also resilient to fire by including fire safety provisions?
