Assessment is arguably the piece of the learning cycle we get most wrong. Whether looked at from the perspective of the learner, the teacher, the school administrator, the politician or the parent, assessment is misunderstood and poorly utilised as a tool for learning. The importance of changing this situation is only made more salient in light of the countless research studies from the likes of Jon Hattie & Dylan Wiliam that points to the power of effective assessment. So, what are the common mistakes and how might we avoid them?

It's interesting how threads emerge from the books we read. An idea springs out at you from one book and then occurs again in another or a link is found between the two. When it turns up a third time in a different place and from an alternate perspective you really take notice. I have had this experience with the concept of emotional or psychological safety.

The consistent message is that we are preparing our students for success in a world very different to that which was the norm only a short time ago. The implications of this change are immense and require a shift in our thinking about what matters most in our classrooms. Such is the pace of change that within any school there will be multiple generations who normalise different perspective on technology and its place in their lives. What becomes clear that the skills we most need within our schools at every level are those which are critical for individuals to be empowered, self-navigating learners. But what does this mean in practical terms?

Why is prioritizing mental health so important for professionals, now more than ever? Professionals have been investing more 'work hours' than ever. This may be due to the changing essence of market goals and priorities, along with how integrated we are nowadays. The 'always-on' working community, which is particularly widespread in diverse industries, relies on inadequate sleep, high-pressure conditions, running around time zones, high burden associated with turnover, and more. It is not unusual for employees to worry about burnout, anxiety associated with employment, and depression. There is a strong connection between pressure and productivity in the workplace. To feel safe, content, and efficient, we all need to have a certain level of involvement and pressure in our working lives. But if there isn't enough strain or too much, there could be a risk. Mental health at workplace The relation between pressure, performance, and mental health: Rust Out Zone: It doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have enough to do or anything at all but that you find yourself often wondering if your work is intriguing or challenging enough. This leaves you feeling extremely disassociated and disengaged. Emotional Wellbeing Zone: You will be motivated, concentrated and invested in what you're doing when you face a fair level of challenge and responsibility in your career. You are likely to feel more secure, satisfied and therefore more confident over time producing successful results. Burn Out Zone: When conditions are extreme and last for prolonged periods of time, you may be at risk of burn-out and, inevitably, anxiety. Your commitment, enthusiasm and efficiency decline dramatically as this happens. People often claim that "when they're stressed/ under pressure, they work well", but this is clearly not the case. Number Talks are a wonderful way to see where our students are with their mathematical thinking. As a part of a daily routine, a Number Talk promotes number sense and mathematical reasoning. In this post, I revisit what a Number Talk can reveal about our students' understanding of mathematics, and how they might be used to promote a fresh perspective. In addition, I examine a success criteria for Number Talks that is more expansive and recognises their true power.

One of the key ways by which we make sense of our world is by analysing the stories that we and others use to describe it. These stories are a construct of our experiences, our beliefs, our cultural perspectives and the interactions between these things. Even when the context in which the story is set is the same, the details and nature of the story that particular individuals or collective share can differ vastly. Only by listening to each story with empathy and genuine desire to understand each individual's telling of this story do we develop true insights. Making sense of the stories of education should be a key process for all educators.

When we are young, we are naturally curious. We ask many, many questions. As we encounter the world, our consciousness is bombarded by a plethora of opportunities for curiosity. And at this early stage of exploring and discovering the world we inhabit, there is no filter between our sense of curiosity and our expression of our it. If we are curious, we will be asking questions and heaven help anyone close enough to be a potential source of answers. - At school, our relationship to both curiosity and inquiry changes.
