so people who are asking questions are not trying to say that what Kony and the LRA are and have done is not horrible... they are asking questions as to whether or nor the company (non-profit) Invisible Children inc. is using the money they are raising responsibly????
  • the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6
  • the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production

Some Biologists Find an Urge in Human Nature to Help - NYTimes.com - 3 views

  • This could have happened at some point early in human evolution, when in order to survive, people were forced to cooperate in hunting game or gathering fruit. The path to obligatory cooperation — one that other primates did not take — led to social rules and their enforcement, to human altruism and to language. “Humans putting their heads together in shared cooperative activities are thus the originators of human culture,” Dr. Tomasello writes.

this line speaks to the essence of my soul as an educator... you mean we can finally stop making decisions for students driven by who makes $ off of it?
  • 10 days of release time for any teachers conducting union business, said union president A.J. Duffy. But the union didn’t win the right to an arbitration hearing for teachers who had exhausted administrative appeals for resisting a transfer to another school. Duffy said some thorny issues remained to work out, but these could be taken up in negotiations over the coming months.

there are only a few teachers i knew whou would ever need to use all of those days for union business... chapter chairs specifically... but what is the concern over exhausting administrative appeals if you have helped to set up and even hire the administrators at your pilot site... or set up the rules administering you?
