I've found Lifehacker guides to be reliable in this area. This is their current guide for when to buy things this year and they keep it updated. If you have major purchases coming up and live in the US, I recommend reviewing this guide and sharing it.

Free online resources for teachers of high quality vetted learning materials. It is searchable without an account. Register to be updated a out categories of resources of interest to you. It is currently BETA, but it still has loads of useful resouces.

Consider sharing this video with your students. Do you realize that modern day slavery exists? Come on. This is ridiculous. This holiday season, I'm asking that you give a tweet, a facebook status update a day to the cause to #endslavery. What can all the teachers do if we bring awareness to this important issue. The slaves aren't on twitter or social media -they can't speak for themselves. Speak out. Watch this video.

Researchers should use Google Scholar Citations. This is like Google Analytics for your paper or article. You can create links to your work, update your profile, add links to coauthors, and then track how often your article is cited. The modern researcher should definitely set this up.

This is a superb site for creating mobile browser apps online. The builder is quick and easy to use with lots of functions to include. More and more people are throwing away their USB memory sticks (but probably just losing them down the back of the sofa) in favour of cloud storage. This is a wonderful storage site, download and multi-platform app which is very similar to Dropbox. A synced folder sits on you devices and can be updated and accessed from any device. You can generating a url to share folders or files with other people. It works just fine on a computer with Dropbox already installed and the free account gives you 15GB of storage. That's enough storage where 'tidy' filing schools might begin to migrate their school network storage to the cloud for free - and that's exciting. If you're using mindmapping and brainstorming in the classroom, this list from Mashable is updated and useful. There are a lot of new tools out (many of them paid but some not.) If your students are writing collaboratively, you should have them brainstorming collaboratively before they ever type the first letter of the paper or website.
