    I was impressed with the quality of the video also. Prezi allows you to copy and paste code into blogs and other tools. In addition, you can download the entire Prezi presentation to present from your computer. As I understand the sepsis diagnosis...sepsis doesn't get recognized as the problem, many times until they cannot reverse the situation.

    I goofed on this posting. This video is an example of a tech application called Flipshare which can be installed for FREE with your purchase of a Flip video. I have always wanted to create an authentic learning activitiy with middle school-age students about "self-identity" where they would write the story, script, acting, video editing, using the Flipshare tech application.

    Flip is an amazingly easy product to use to capture video. A great idea to do stories with your class. This video made me want to get up and move, rather than sitting here at the computer.

What makes a Quality Course from a Student Perspective - 3 views

    The author of this study is Penny Ralstom-Berg, a Senior Instruction Designer at University of Wisconsin, where a survey of what makes a good course from a student perspective was conducted. The summary of the study starts on slide 20. The top 10 desires is consistent with what we've been focusing on in this class, however the bottom top is somewhat at odds and seems, to be, counter-intuitive to what I would have expected. Top 10: Assessments are appropriately timed, varied and appropriate; Instructions on how to access resources are sufficient and easy to understand; Course components are web-based or easily downloaded for use offline; Requirements for interaction are clearly explained; Opportunity to speak with instructor, classmates through email, bulletin boards, any time / any place; Technologies required are readily available - provided or easily downloaded; Clear instructions tell me how to get started and to find course components; Criteria for how I will be evaluated is descriptive and specific; Navigation is logical, consistent, and efficient; The grading policy is clearly stated Bottom 10: I find course-related content and share it with the instructor and classmates; I use wikis, shared documents, or other online collaborative tools to complete group work; I am asked to introduce myself to the class; I coach other students and help answer their questions; Opportunity to speak with my instructor and classmates through… same time, same place technology; Instructor does not participate in class discussions Course contains interactive games or simulations; I author / create course-related content and share it with instructor and classmates; I work in groups with other students; Course contains audio and video content

    I'm surprised to read "working in groups" and "being asked to introduce myself" are in the bottom. Seems like the Top 10 are all about quick access to information/clear guidelines. Some of the Bottom 10 require more reflection and time on task. This is disappointing to me but a revelation.

    Your characterization is right-on. I was thinking that perhaps this reflects how maybe college students are - which is to get through the courses to get a degree and not always on the what they can learn component. What I personally find more challenging on internet courses is finding who I really resonate with. There is a delay in the dialog and reading something is different than inflection.

    Reading through these student recommendations was very helpful, and as you say - they complement the material presented in the Boettcher textbook very well. I was somewhat confused by Penny Ralton-Berg's differentiation between the Top 10 and Bottom 10 items. My impression is that there is a low student positive response for their contributing course materials for a class site.(??)

    I am not certain I grasp the meaning of that slide presentation. Some of it I get and agree with.

    Mary Ann, On your blog, you say: "Often, students don't live in proximity to the best teachers for their subject matter interests as in the case of language study--a school may offer only German and Spanish whereas the student might wish to become proficient in Swahili." I think that is possibly one of the great major benefits that will emerge from Web-based classes - that us in-the-trenches teachers may be able to bring some of the best knowledge experts in the world into our classes. One example of that happened just this past Thursday, when Jennifer had Howard Rheingold - the long term media commentator luminary stop by for a visit. I couldn't believe my eyeballs when I saw his name show up in Elluminate! I was even able to have short video conversation with him.

    This lesson activity is the opener for my Course Framework, designed for middle school students. There is a link to a short video I made with Animoto that is posted as a "tour" for the research teams. Please note that if this was a real course, I would make a long video complete with narration and music containing most of the 500 pictures I took during my own trip to the Galapagos in 2004. Comments for improvement are very welcome.

    Mary Ann, You really have a lot of great visual material to pull from to create your science safari of the Galapagos. Have you thought about incorporating any satellite and other ground level images of these islands from Google Earth?

Class Roster (Activity 8.4) - 8 views

    animoto.com is a tool that allows one to take pictures and create a slide show, adding text and music. It is a free tool, however, for a modest amount you can have additional features that allow you to do professional editting. I chose this activity as a way to connect with everyone and can really match faces with names. If you do see any mistakes, please let me know and I can easily update the slide show. I feel it goes to the discussion about creating community and having a presence that is more dimensional than just our names in a list. One could request and easily add other photos or snips.

    Ann, what a wonderful video! The only problem I had was watching it as a complete stream--I think my network connection is slow this morning. My 250 class was introduced to this tool and as you know, I used it in my Course Framework posting, but another student used it similarly to you. She developed a video of herself when she is not teaching (activities with family and friends) and posted it as her "Course presence", Further, she said that all of the students in her Course would be making videos of this type and together, they would become the Course Roster! It's such a simple, cool idea!! Thanks for sharing!

    Bandwidth is always a problem. I like the idea of "individualized" animotos that can be combined. The more advanced tool does allow for adding video. http://animoto.com/play/ye7XT0nzKSJvOWK8XGTh0A - this is an example of how I used in a personal way. My family and friends were more responsive to seeing this in this form and its an easy way for me to sort out pictures I want to focus on from all the hundreds I seem to take with the digital camera these days.

The 5 Characteristics of Highly Successful Job Postings - 0 views

    As part of the lesson 8 readings (Boettcher, Page 146), there is a description of the characteristics of quality on discussion postings. This outline is helpful and an extremely important element of eLearning course design that I had not previously thought about so succiently. Analogously, the link above - lists the guidelines - one should consider for good job postings. I think the underlying messge is to post a depth of detail (like salary range) which with all the information we have to consider is probably quite helpful.

    I took your survey, Hyerin, and appreciated the questions you posed. I agree with Ann regarding asking about the time spent on various activities in the module. I, too, am interested in how much time it takes my students to complete tasks so that I can adjust activities if they require too much or too little time.

    This website is a repository for "policy research from leading think tanks worldwide." There are many articles posted in PDF format for your perusal. I looked at several, among them, one regarding blended (hybrid) learning classes in Colorado Public Schools and another about the impact of digital learning in the US and the world.

    I read the article on What Determines the Return to Education. This was basically a study about how in 1973 Scotland raised the minimum time to leave school was based on a calendar event - the end of Easter and not just the age of the student. The result was that it added about a year to the student's staying in school and this resulted in more people getting more formal acadmic qualifications and helps them in the job market, but the impact of how much more they learned wasn't measured. A good website for the latest.

Ten Best Practices of Boettcher-Presentation - 2 views

    I am sharing a video I made for the class project. I welcome any critiques or information on how to make this a better video. I do not know if I have addressed all the elements Jen has asked for. I tried to address as many as I could...except those I will learn about in Module 8. This was my first attempt in making a eLearning video on You Tube, with the help of Jing and Screencast. I found a few frustrations along the way; but it was fairly easy to use. I have the following probs: 1.) I could not fit the screen to the screen used in You Tube; 2.) I had problems setting the volume controls on my recording; 3.) I found myself unable to think as fast as the video was going and 4.) the overall quality of the screen when used" full screen" was not as good as I would have liked it to be. Finally, I have never ( well maybe not NEVER) had so darn much fun doing something so darn frustrating at times.

    I'm so glad it was fun for you! I've found that I have to reduce the size of the browser window if I'm recording on a widescreen monitor. Usually you can just hover your mouse over the corner of the browser window and drag it to the size you want.

    Your video on youtube is set to private. I think you can go in and manage your videos and change it to public for others to see it.

    I just viewed your project video, Joy. It appears that you worked hard, had a great time, and came out with a good product. I agree with the problems you had, though. The screen was difficult to view because it was so small (Youtube screens are tiny) but if I squinted, I could make things out. The sound quality was not there. I could hear your voice but it was a bit "distant". Knowing you and your intelligent approach to problem-solving, I'm sure you will be able to rectify these things. I look forward to viewing the project again if you choose to change anything. You are a trailblazer, Joy!! Thanks for leading the pack!

    Marry Ann, there's a little button at the bottom right of youtube videos where you can make it full-screen. Joy, did you use a headset with mic, or are you recording using the mic on the computer/laptop? A headset with mic should make a big difference. If you are using a headset, try moving the mic closer to your mouth.

    Using a headset doesn't get the kind of result I want. However, I will try to do that the next time around. I have found this to be a problem when I made the elluminate recording, too. I could think you must be a fan Mary Ann! I really don't know what I am doing when I start these projects...they just sort of do themselves. My husband just shakes his head and ignores me. His computer is in our office. It is L shaped and I am on one side and he is on the other on the inside side of the L.That way we can't see each other...it keeps me from being tempted to do things to him, I might not want others to know about ( I am saying this while I untangle my fingers from his neck...at the moment.)

    I like the way he reasoned that you have to change the assessment of these classes and this in turn changes the classes and the time frame as well.

    I must admit that I don't really have a good definition of what LMS means to the author. He refers to learning environments and gives the "follow the teacher" example, so I'll assume he means personalized elearning, but I would have preferred that he provided a definition. Anyway, I agree to have to change the assessment, as well as the expectations for the teacher. It would be a challenge for the teacher to keep up with many students, but probably also provide him or her some additional insights to his/her work.

    I designed a 5 question form that asks you to think about what you did during this Module and to respond with brief text answers. Enjoy!

    The questions were quite reflective and more of "test" in a way, although there is obviously not a right or wrong answer. I must admit that the modules have somewhat blended, so I couldn't answer precisely. That being said, I used a similiar concept in my course framework, where I combined self-check with a "quiz", with the difference being the quiz questions are more reflective and would contribute to the score I give to the activity. Good questions!

    My online community is a movie review group on Facebook, and like the title, the group is about reviewing movies, as well as introducing new movies (usually with trailers) to other group members. There is a separate discussion board, but people usually write on the wall, which is more convenient. I can look at other people's comments on certain movie that I would want to watch, as well as find out about new movies that could be coming out soon. Occasionally, some peopel post advertisement posts, since this is a group that is open to any facebook user, but most of the posts are movie-related posts.

Student cheating - 5 views

    I do not believe learners will cheat if they are made to feel they are capable learners with something to offer society, each other and their community. Also, seeing the consequences of cheating in their lives might make them think twice about it. Cheating denies each of us the right to self respect and earning what we have achieved, through hard work and desire to learn. Maybe cheating has more to do with the institution and instructors or professors than the learners.

    I agree, however, the challenge as a teacher is how to make large number of students capable learners. Technology provides us with additional tools to do so, but it is still difficult to provide the personal motivation and support that so often makes a difference with a student.

    It seems to me personal motivation and support are things instructors or profs need to help the students find.

    It's definitely a challenge. And there's more than just ability and intelligence at play. There are cultural factors involved in motivation and desire for learning. As a teacher, we sometimes have to recognize that we won't reach each and every student, but we just have to keep trying our best.

    Thanks for the great resource. Having only taught in a very small university, where classes average 15 students, you really get to know your students thinking, style of writing, etc. Yes, the comment made about cheating more likely to happen when a student feels "invisible" is probably common in larger university settings.     This website offers chat boards for teachers in all subject areas and grade le vels. It also has free lesson plans, etc. I went to the science teachers chat and looked at many of the postings, questions asked and answered, and decided that for the time being, I would join this community.
