The Machine is (Changing) Us: YouTube and the Politics of Authenticity - 1 views

This is one of Wesch's more popular presentations. Definitely worth a look!

I enjoyed Michael Wesch's comparison of Orwell's 1984 versus Huxley's Brave New World. He referenced Neil Postman who said that "Big Brother does not watch us, by his choice. We watch him, by ours. There is no need for wardens or gates or Ministries of Truth ..." Based on the audience's response and Wesch's to his own comments, I had the impression that he believes we're out of the woods regarding these scenarios; that the Web has given us all a voice to talk back to Big Brother, and keep him under a watchful eye. As an example, Weschl points to YouTube as a growing population of contributing users - many of whom address each other as part of a larger community. I think the jury is out for both the Orwell and Huxley scenarios - since our private lives are increasingly more transparent, and the lures of interactive electronic entertainment and other distractions are becoming more compelling.

I am not certain "1984" isn't happening with the ability to spy in chat rooms and all online applications by the government. Also, think about the video cameras for controlling traffic at stop lights! Ouch! Anyway, we seldom hear about what Homeland Security is up to. That worries me. Abuse happens and has happened in the past...Watergate, etc...just read WIKI Leaks ( I have not) to get a feeling for what government does behind the scenes, not to even mention torture. The problem with security clearances and top secret info is it usually keeps info from citizens, our enemies already know what we're up to!

I think a lot of times people are afraid of internet technologies, because they see the data they leave behind. Most people don't think twice about the data they leave every place else. (Grocery club cards, credit and debit cards, library cards.) The Numerati, by Steven Baker, is an interesting book about how our data are tracked and used.
  •
I think credit cards have chips to track your purchases and maybe even your what-a-bouts! Not to mention my Safeway, Albertson's and etc...discount cards. I will have to locate that book on break.

The Human Factor: Do You Speak Video? - 1 views

  •
"Video has become relatively inexpensive to produce, and because we all have a lifetime of experience with watching video, it's easy to believe that we understand how to communicate reasonably well using video as a medium."
  •
Its an interesting thought that all video, including those for elearning objectives, is really story-telling and one must utilize the medium - such as panning the camera - is important. I hadn't thought of video as story-telling, but it is a good way to think about how to structure a video lesson. A story has a beginning, middle, and end and it needs to engage the "listerner".

NSTA--Online Learning and Science - 1 views

This is an interesting article giving the NSTA's position on the use of online education for science teachers. Oops! The title is actually: The Role of E-Learning in Science.

Its good to standards evolving. It implies a legitmacy to elearning.

Knowledge Versus Understanding - 1 views

  •
"When students understand, they become able to apply the concepts learned beyond the original context of the classroom. The student's capability and capacity to see underlying patterns is enabled, which allows the student to recognize the same patterns in other arenas."
  •
Got it and probably had it all along.
  •
In fact, this is exactly the type of learning the doctoral program was guiding me toward as a professor. However, it was not brought out this way and was grasped subconsciously. I could not participate in Teaching Assistantships during those years.

Jon Stewart Exposes The Lavish Lifestyle Of The American Public School Teacher - 1 views

  •
There's certainly bias in this post, and it's political, but I think it's important for us all to be aware of what's going on in budget cuts to education. It's a complex issue, but one that affects our entire society, not just people with kids.
  •
I am still laughing over that one!!! Alright you teachers in this class...as a tax payer, I want you to work 12 months a year for us. If your not teaching, I want you to babysit all those latch key kids out there! You owe us...NOT! By the way, that principle or superintendent that was just fired in the Seattle, was making $264,000 per year plus benefits! Ouch!!! How much are teachers making...I'll bet it is not that amount.

Recording from Office Hours Thursday 2/10/11 - 1 views

  •
This is the recording from the office hours session on Thursday. Bruce was the only student from our class who showed up. The session was very informal and fun, with lots of drop-in guests along the way. Howard Rheingold showed up to see how we use Elluminate for office hours, so we gave him a tour through it. Dean Shareski joined us and helped share how he uses Elluminate with his students. We had a student from another course show up and share how she uses Twitter, and then ask some questions about google docs.

Unfortunately, I had to go to Renton on Friday...so I was busy creating a legal document ( during that time) for a situation with the state, I have found myself in! I started to watch this and will continue sometime this week.

Balancing a healthy life with technology. « Teaching with Technology - 1 views

  •
This is an interesting student post about balancing technology in our lives.
  •
http://www.newsweek.com/2011/02/27/i-can-t-think.html# - This is an article this week in Newsweek that "The Twitterization of our culture has revoluntioned out lives, but with unintended consequence - over overloaded brains freeze when we have to make decisions".

I find it interesting when searchng for examples of technology tools used for online classes that some of the better ones are from outside the US. I have found sites at US universities & colleges, but find the examples up for the public to be from older courses...2005 and earlier.

BTC Instrumentation Youtube Channel - 1 views

  •
I can't recall if I shared this before, but it's appropriate for this week, especially for anyone doing blended learning. Tony is an instructor I used to work with at BTC. He's using laptops for small group work, where they work together on projects and he visits the groups one at a time to check for understanding. It's a good example of continuous assessment in a classroom setting. How could this type of model be translated to a fully online course?

The Edublog Awards - 1 views

  •
I'm not a big fan of the awards, but this is a good place to start looking at education blogs by category.  Check out the nominees, as well as the winners for the categories that interest you.  Voting can become a popularity contest, so  I wouldn't suggest the winners are necessarily the best.

Module #4 Catchup - 1 views

This is the Module #4 post with overarching understandings.
  •
I took a look at it and it seems maybe your post was cut off? I like the understanding I see there. I also like that you mentioned the just-in-time issue. I've found many times I've planned workshops only to discover the learners really needed something different, and I've had to switch gears.

Andy Carvin's Twitter Stream - 1 views

  •
If you're not already familiar with this, you may want to search for some articles about it. Andy Carvin, from NPR, has been collecting and redistributing "tweets" of people involved in important world protests and revolutions right now. He also sends tweets asking for translations of video and audio that aren't in English. People translate and send them back to him. It's really quite incredible. He's also just a nice guy. He's sacrificing a lot of his personal time to do this. Occasionally he posts about his family and other things he's doing.

Example of Elluminate Guest Presenter - 1 views

  •
In our virtual office hours last night, we talked about what it's like having a guest presenter in an Elluminate session. This is just an example of one who visited our Health IT class. Only 1 student showed, so it's a bit awkward.
  •
I was happy to join a session in Elluminate that Jennifer hosted. It was truly an interesting exerience. Her guests were well versed on the subject matter and it was a bit too short at about an hour.
