Teacher Expriences in OnLine - 1 views

    This is a research article where the authors studied classroom teachers who were required to convert to on-line learning. Some of the results I found interesting, was how the teachers who taught in traditional classrooms had challenges in re-structuring the information - primarily in the area of control information flow. More assessments, for example, had to be added. There is also a discussion of increased workload by the instructors and how this was a variable in the enthusiasm of the teacher's embracing the technologin.

    The amount of time is always a big shock. And most of the time, it's difficult to get administration to understand that. It's something faculty unions are definitely taking into consideration with contract negotiations. I read this book a few years ago http://www.josseybass.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0787987700.html and while it has some good ideas and information, I think they were also providing a huge stipend for redevelopment of courses.

    The two videos shared here reinforced my understanding and views - i.e., the babyboomers (people born between 1946-1964, according to the PBS video) are planning to enjoy life to the fullest and are often seeing retirement from their primary career as an opportunity fo other careers and opportunities. As babyboomers do retire, I think it could be a different experience for those born closer to 1946 than those born later. Resources will probably be more limited and the earlier retires will probably have more serious, age-related health issues.

    Hi Ann...I think the articles I have presented show that the early boomers are the healthiest and will live longer than any generation in the future. The later boomers will have increasing shorter life spans and willnot be as healthy. There are a variety of reasons for this.

    I agree about the boomers being the healthiest. I did not walk away with a strong differentiation between those born in the late 1940s and those in the 1960s, but it resonates with my common sense.

    Joy, Your posts are quite sobering, regarding your own experiences working towards completing your university education. I strongly agree with the following quote in your post: "In sum, it is time for educators to make college and higher learning relevant to their students. It is not about us, it is about them. We are the facilitators of their learning. We must prepare them for the world they will find themselves in when they leave the protected walls of our colleges and universities" I found the recent events in Cairo to be fascinating, where large numbers of people suddenly rose up against an authoritarian and out-of-touch government. This largely peaceful uprising was fueled by the same Web2.0 technologies that are underpinning this class. It's possible that many traditional schools will soon find themselves in a similar situation to the Egyptian government, where students pass them by in favor of lower cost and more relevant educational experiences - many of them available online. Bill Gates recently came under fire for making the statement that valid online college degrees may soon be available for $2000. He may have said this to exaggerate a point, but the evidence of a growing number of online low cost educational resources can't be ignored. One of them is the Khan Academy - run by an MIT graduate who has created a large free archive of mathematics courses that are used by students all over the world - many who claim they are better than their university courses. Colleges and universities ignore this development at their own peril. It's not clear yet how we'll make this transition to relevancy for students, but the next decade will be very interesting...

    Hi Joy (and fellow classmates) - we were out-of-town for a week. Internet was available, but for a price $.75 per minute. I had planned on using some of our vacation time to work on this course without the hassle of juggling work commitments. At a price per minute, this idea didn't pan out. To get caught up, I checked out our Diigo communications and visited your blog. I like the way you insert YouTube videos to add dimension to your ideas! The two I looked at addressed the LMS system - Canvas. I was particularly fascinated with the young techy who ended his presentation, asking his audience about how they might define the role for SOCIAL MEDIA in both course structure and as a learning tool. Interesting how our course materials (and we) have also been pondering this same issue! Thanks for finding and sharing a very relevant presentation. I also enjoyed your thoughts as well.

    Today our senior population is aging at a rapid rate. Is it possible we, as a society, are sending them to an early end of life dead line because of our attitudes and out moded beliefs regarding aging in America? Can we not help keep their minds alive and well by changing some of our society's institutions...of higher education?

    Joy, I just finished reading your blog posts and viewing the videos. I agree with Bruce. . . they are quite sobering. I am angered that there is so much age discrimination out there, excited that Japan has such a unique way of addressing the needs of its aging population, and frustrated that a college degree does not necessarily translate into a job. My own daughter is in that position--she has a teaching degree earned two years ago and no prospects of a job anytime soon. Her income is earned through subbing in the Sultan School District and managing a horse stable. All of this translates into 7 days of work per week, a very minimal income and burnout. She is 37 years old (not quite a senior, but in line with the unemployed GWU grads shown in the video you posted). Your passion definitely comes through in all of the blog postings, Joy. What you say about assessment aligns with my beliefs as well. I have never been a proponent of grades--to me, they are just part of a hoop that must be jumped through in order to achieve a goal. With that in mind, I was overJOYed when authentic assessment came onto the education scene as it offered a way to monitor and guide students in their learning, not just give them a letter or number that was supposed to signify that they had "learned" the course content. In my experience, most students who memorize course content for tests within a given course, will not retain it once the tests have been taken. There is simply too much competition for good grades at all levels of education and not enough desire for a true understanding of ideas and concepts.

    The future of computers are not only surface with multi points of movement but holograms or actually virtual picture of the people talking or instructing. You might want to look at what the futurist are saying and predicting. This is what our students will be working with and then some. Nano tech will make it even better with less.

    It's certainly fascinating! I wonder, though, if some of our habits will be too ingrained for the holograms to be widely accepted. I'm thinking particularly of multi-tasking. If we're used to checking email and facebook and our phone at the same time, are we going to be open to a technology where we have to stop what we're doing and concentrate on one thing?

    I think it depends on the hologram presentation and how it interacts within the application. I think we will have to wait and see what they do with this in the future. Do to te secrecy involved, we don't have answers yet.

    So there's another learning moment. As an instructor, what are our expectations about student access to technology? We used to have to be much more selective about the tools we used. We had to assume the lowest tech skills, and connections. It's not that rigid any more. Also, institutions have different guidelines.     This was in today's LA Times, indicating how a person's disability benefits were promptly stopped after the insurer saw posts on Facebook. The unintended consquences of information further our discussions regarding privacy.

    I think the bottom line here is: tell the truth. There was an example given about having a bad back and then bragging about running a marathon. The truth at the bottom of this issue. If "Big Brother" is watching (and we know that if we have a presence on line) then don't do anything that you would not want "Big Brother" to see. When my last husband told me our phone was being tapped, I had no concern. I knew there had to be legitimate reasons and would say or do nothing that would have caused problems. I do not enter things that I can not defend (I hope).

    The concept of personal privacy and what to post or not post is such a difficult one for parents and students now. We archive for two years now to comply with the laws and to be able to meet possible public records requests. It is hard for adults to keep in mind sometimes that even an e-mail can be forwarded on to anyone in the world. A different planet from even 10 years ago.

    I found this site while researching this week's topics. I explored the site and watched the demo video, however, I could not find out how much this application costs. I do see how this could be a great tool to use for research papers, essays, all written assignments.

    In reading some additional blogs on this, it seems to be a reasonable tool in highlighting plagarism. Apparently, though, (based on the blogs I read), it matches correctly cited citations, so the raw score it provides needs to be examined better.

    Ann...I agree. Any tool needs further investigation...there are so many of these available. However, when I was teaching none of the campuses offered any of these applications as tools for the faculty.

    This tool is extremely expensive. It also requires students to contribute their work to a repository, where it will be compared to other work. My understanding is that BC is piloting this now.

    I saw a quote to a university that was over 50K.

    We have several secondary schools using it and they like it very much. It is a subscription cost per school but as thePO doesn't come through my office I am not sure how much it is. It probably varies by size of school.

    Its an interesting thought that all video, including those for elearning objectives, is really story-telling and one must utilize the medium - such as panning the camera - is important. I hadn't thought of video as story-telling, but it is a good way to think about how to structure a video lesson. A story has a beginning, middle, and end and it needs to engage the "listerner".

    A novel way to address shrinking school budgets that mandate class size. Usually elearning means there is a price tag for setting and maintaining the computers, programs, and internet. Maybe there was a different part of the budget that paid for the environment. I agree with the comments at the end of the article - primarily because of my own experience and just common sense in thinking about it - that a blended environment is probably the most effective.

    A study by the US Government has concluded hybrid classes are the most productive learning environments for elearners. Florida's virtual studies are counter to logic. I for one would not want to be a student in that classroom. I would revolt!! Ahhh...not to be confused with starting a revolution ( which just might be needed).

    I thought it was interesting that most of the classes were sold-out, indicating the need and interest for the information. Since these courses are not part of a curriculum, the participants will be motivated.

    Thanks for sharing this. Yes, many are SOLD-OUT and it makes perfectly good sense to take these courses on-line where you can view videos, artwork and read a wealth of information from the museum archives & library. I took a class from Lincoln Center Institute about 3 summers ago where we even did some hands-on creative work, scanned our creations (to share on-line) and then collectively reflected specifically about the "process of creating." It worked quite well and I definately plan to incorporate that type of activity into my on-line course.

    For more information on the Marzano study, you might be interested in this 5 part review http://edinsanity.com/tag/marzano/ I haven't done enough research on it to form an opinion, but Dr. Becker is someone I follow and respect, and he's got some interesting points.

    With minimal investigation of this (i.e., didn't read his actual study), his work has generated dialog and interesting points. His research, as I understand it, measured the impact of the IWB (interactive white board) in learning enviornment. The result being that it made a positive impact. Whether the research results are accurate or not in this study (which were questioned in the link Jennifer provided), the point Marzano makes in the video - that technology is here and we need to learn and can teach more effectively with it - seems obvious to me. In fact, regardless of white board technology, just the use of eBooks, minimizing the weight of books students often carry with them, is positive.

To Really Learn, Quit Studying and Take a Test - 2 views

    For this week's module, I started exploring the link, http://groups.diigo.com/group/diigoineducation, which is exactly what our group is developing on diigo - site for the sharing of relevant articles, thoughts, research on education (teaching and learning). Check it out and thank you, Jennifer. On this site, a recent article in the NY Times (title above) caught several people's attention. A study was conducted with 200 students to see which practice best promoted learning when given a passage to read about human digestion (metaphor here?). Against our better assumptions, students who were tested soon after reading a passage retained the information better than students who were given the opportunity to apply certain study skills (such as bubble-mapping) before being tested. Conclusion - people learn information better when they are asked to engage in the "practice of retrieval" of information. Applying study skills before testing did not produce better results. The mental process of "retrival" sets the synapses in the brain, better than simply applying study skills. Also, this site connected me to a really rich website by the University of Memphis' Dept. of Psychology which lists numerous resources regarding the principles of learning that are grounded in science - check it out! http://www.psyc.memphis.edu/learning/principles/lp3.shtml So, going back to this "testing thing," what might be some implications when developing an online course? Should probing questions be presented, interspersed at certain intervals, before other on-line activities are introduced? This takes us back to an earlier topic regarding the kinds of questions/exercises we need to design to make online learning both meaningful and effective.

    Do you think the type of knowledge makes a difference? Would this same practice work equally well for heart surgery, eastern philosophy, diesel mechanics, and poetry?

    I prefer hands on to learn most things that would include brain surgery (I have not found anyone who would offer to be my patient to practice on); diesel mechanics; and while I do not write poetry, I sing it! Eastern Philosphy now there's a challenge. Do the martial arts count; if so, I want hands on!!!

    Quick read. The bottom line one needs to ask, will companies find that balance and then abide it? I am not optomistic that will happen. There seems to be a mentality that it's OK to collect all this personal data. There has been some backlash of late, specifically Google and Facebook appear to be 'trying' to implement some safeguards. It will be interesting to see how things look in 12 months from now.

    I often wonder how privacy can ever be achieved on the internet. Although there may be more gates, access, and checkpoints added, there will always be a server somewhere that is recording our inputs and gathering data and stored.

    I think it's going to have to be redefined. But I also think we're in the process of defining new commodities. We need to decide what we value.

    I think this issue of privacy and use of personal information by online service companies is a very big deal. I'm also beginning to make use of some of these cloud-based applications (especially from Google) as part of my standard approach to teaching hybrid classes. Up until this past year, I've relied on the tried and true Vista/Blackboard to manage student projects and interactions, but I've found it to be sort of a dinosaur compared to the speed and ease of use of other Web2.0 apps. But if I'm working outside of Vista/Blackboard, I need to be especially careful of privacy policies and procedures of the companies behind these online apps. In the 'Sharing and Privacy' article, Mike Melanson makes some interesting points. He says: "...the companies themselves - the Googles and Facebooks and Twitters of the world - realize that correctly handling these issues of privacy are center to their continued success." and... ""All things equal, the company that's going to want to win in the next couple years will have the best privacy model." When I was doing my own investigation into this issue last winter, I asked myself, "What are the most conservative and and security conscious organizations using for social networking tools?" So I went up to the US Army website to find out. Certainly they have a heightened need to be careful what companies they choose for their social networking tools. I posted the results of this online research on my Web2.0 Chronicle blog. The results aren't surprising... Google, Facebook, Twiter, Wordpress, Flickr... among others. I see no need to rush into this area, and am willing to wait until the dust settles and user results come back from dependable sources. Jennifer's recommendation of Diigo is a good example of this. For myself, I've already left a significant "digital footprint" over the past 15 years - which is now out

MOOCs - 1 views

    As an optional resource, a youtube introduction to MOOCs ((Massive, Open Online Courses) is given. As I understand it, MOOCs the "term" basically describing a collaborative "blog" on a topic. The concept is that courses can be offered with everyone who wants to to participate and/or take the course. The above link, I think is a good example of a MOOC and it is on eLearning. Similiar to EDU251 there is content proferred, as well as ways to comments and connect to other relavent websites. You can explore the site, but liked the definition of elearning: Elearning is the use of any type of technology in improving learning. At it's most basic level, it is email...at it's most advanced, it is an online course (or simulation, or virtual reality, or...well, you get the point)

Instructor Resources for MathXL - 0 views

    Using Google, I found this source for math support for online educators. It is very well put together and extremely easy to use. Although I'm not a math instructor, if I were, I would enjoy using this support program because it seems well organized and flows in a logical fashion. There are links to all of an instructor's basic questions.

    Pearson's got some decent resources to go along with their text books. I've known several instructors who've used MyMathLab and enjoyed it. Many instructors are surprised when I ask them what online resources are provided by their textbook publishers. The publishers are scrambling to keep up and add value, because they know they are at risk for becoming obsolete, especially in math.

    "Multi-disciplinary instruction must make meaningful connections among all subject areas." I think eLearning enables this connection. For example, in tutoring math online, audio doesn't always work well and I use a chat room with the students. This underlines their need for spelling in English.

Wikis: A platform for Innovation in the Classroom - 1 views

    This weeks lesson on CMS or LMS includes the Wiki...which I just love. I am certain as I use this tool, there will be probs. Right now, I really like it. Coupled with Elluminate as a synchronous meeting area, it can by pass the older LMS systems. For example, a instructor at Shoreline is working on updating Elluminate to fit their needs for teaching completely from this system. Unfortunately, I may never see the end result.
