Google For Educators - 0 views

Project Spectrum was developed by the SketchUp Team at Google to help people with autism take advantage of their visual and spatial gifts. The idea for Project Spectrum originated when we began getting phone calls and emails from users telling us about how much kids on the autism spectrum were enjoying SketchUp. As the calls kept coming in, we learned that people with autism tend to be visually and spatially gifted-that, in fact, they think in pictures. When people with these gifts get their hands on powerful, easy-to-use 3D design software like SketchUp, sparks tend to fly. Inspired by what we've learned, we've partnered with the Boulder, Colorado chapter of the Autism Society of America, the Boulder Valley School District, and the Life Long Learning Lab at University of Colorado to provide children with software and guidance that may help them to express an idea or even develop a life skill.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills - ICT Literacy Maps - 0 views

  • In collaboration with several content area organizations, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills developed a series of ICT Literacy Maps illustrating the intersection between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy and core academic subjects including English, mathematics, science and social studies (civics/government, geography, economics, history). The maps enable educators to gain concrete examples of how ICT Literacy can be integrated into core subjects, while making the teaching and learning of core subjects more relevant to the demands of the 21st century.

Literacyworks: Improving Literacy Skills through Comic Books - 1 views

  • One of the tenets of literacy programs is that people will learn more when it's related to a subject that interests them. Voice of America reports that educators in New York are applying that idea with their grade-school students by offering opportunities to create comic books. Michael Bitz, who created the Comic Book Project, acknowledges that it's difficult to determine a definite link between the project and its effect on students' literacy skills, but the program focuses just as much on the writing of comic books as the artwork. But the success of the program is clear: engage students with subjects that interest them, and they'll show dedication to learning.

ISTE | National Educational Technology Standards - 0 views

  •
ISTE's National Educational Technology Standards NETS have served as a roadmap for improved teaching and learning by educators throughout the United States. The standards, used in every U.S. state and many countries, are credited with significantly influencing expectations for students and creating a target of excellence relating to technology. In 2006, ISTE began work on the next generation of NETS for Students, which focuses more on skills and expertise and less on tools.

eLearn: Best Practices - Seven Steps to Better E-learning - 0 views

  • If you're faced with an expert saying, "They need to know this," ask a simple question: "Armed with this new knowledge, what can learners do differently than before?" Get your SMEs thinking in terms of new skills, not new knowledge.
    • April H.

I find this is even true within the Master's courses I develop. Even though our students need the knowledge, they also need to be able to apply it in practical ways. SMEs lose track of that easily because they cannot see the trees for the forest. Our job as instructional designers is to ask the right questions and focus our SMEs so that we can design courses that include both the knowledge and skills that students need.
  • But valuable mistakes only happen when we maintain an appropriate level of challenge.
    • April H.

We learn from our mistakes and it should be no different in e-learning. While designing a course, we should be aware that learners will foul up and take advantage of those teachable moments. The course/game/learning experience should be designed so that it is safe to make a mistake and learn from it rather than be punished for it.

"...a distillation of cognitive research on learning intended to make your e-learning more effective, and to create a better experience for the learner. These seven principles integrate cognitive and emotional components of learning, and the more that happens, the greater the outcomes."

Google For Educators - Web Search - 0 views

  •
Web search can be a remarkable research tool for students - and we've heard from educators that they could use some help to teach better search skills in their classroom. The following Search Education lessons were developed by Google Certified Teachers to help you do just that. The lessons are short, modular and not specific to any discipline so you can mix and match to what best fits the needs of your classroom. Additionally, all lessons come with a companion set of slides (and some with additional resources) to help you guide your in-class discussions.

Curriki - AvoidingPlagiarism - 0 views

Description:This extensive packet is modified from a collection of tutorials from Indiana University (http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets.shtml). It discussed "classic" plagiarism as well as the "cut-and-paste" variety. Paraphrasing is modeled, and there is an independent homework assignment to reinforce that skill. Finally, there is a self-evaluation and "homework" for parents, in which students engage in a discussion about the changing nature of plagiarism. For Grades 3-8

Carsonified » Meet @HelloApp, Making Conferences More Fun - 0 views

  •
After four tiring-exciting-stressful-fun days, we'd like to introduce you to our new little buddy, HelloApp. The idea is simple: When you arrive at a conference, you just say where you're sitting, via Twitter. Once you do that, you can … 1. Search for people with a certain skill-set (ie PHP, jQuery, CSS3, marketing, etc) and see where they're sitting 2. View the seating diagram colored based on Twitter follower count 3. Search for a specific person in the audience and find out where they're sitting 4. View the seating diagram colored based on whether people are Designers, Developers or Businessmen 5. Earn badges and points by meeting people and completing tasks. If you earn a high enough rank, you'll be able to post public messages to the entire audience and win prizes.
