The context of previous efforts to reform education reframes that criticism. Online "Predators" and their Victims: Myths, Realities and Implications for Prevention ... - 0 views

  •
Abstract The publicity about online "predators" who prey on naive children using trickery and violence is largely inaccurate. Internet sex crimes involving adults and juveniles more often fit a model of statutory rape - adult offenders who meet, develop relationships with, and openly seduce underage teenagers -- than a model of forcible sexual assault or pedophilic child molesting. This is a serious problem, but one that requires different approaches from current prevention messages emphasizing parental control and the dangers of divulging personal information. Developmentally appropriate prevention strategies that target youth directly and acknowledge normal adolescent interests in romance and sex are needed. These should provide younger adolescents with awareness and avoidance skills, while educating older youth about the pitfalls of sexual relationships with adults and their criminal nature. Particular attention should be paid to higher risk youth, including those with histories of sexual abuse, sexual orientation concerns, and patterns of off- and online risk taking. Mental health practitioners need information about the dynamics of this problem and the characteristics of victims and offenders because they are likely to encounter related issues in a variety of contexts.

Social Network Sites: Public, Private, or What? : The Knowledge Tree - 0 views

  • Social network sites are the latest generation of ‘mediated publics’ - environments where people can gather publicly through mediating technology.
  • Persistence. What you say sticks around.
    • Jeremy Price

      Interesting.
  • Searchability.
  • ...19 more annotations...
  • Invisible audiences. While it is common to face strangers in public life, our eyes provide a good sense of who can overhear our expressions. In mediated publics, not only are lurkers invisible, but persistence, searchability, and replicability introduce audiences that were never present at the time when the expression was created.
  • Replicability. Digital bits are copyable; this means that you can copy a conversation from one place and paste it into another place.
  • Context is only one complication of this architecture. Another complication has to do with scale. When we speak without amplification, our voice only carries so far. Much to the dismay of fame-seekers, just because the Internet has the potential to reach millions, the reality is that most people are heard by very few.
  • The lack of context is precisely why the imagined audience of Friends is key. It is impossible to speak to all people across all space and all time. It’s much easier to imagine who you are speaking to and direct your energies towards them, even if your actual audience is quite different.
  • two audiences cause participants the greatest headaches: those who hold power over them and those that want to prey on them.
  • Some try to resumé-ify their profiles, putting on a public face intended for those who hold power over them. While this is typically the adult-approved approach, this is unrealistic for most teens who prioritise socialisation over adult acceptance.
  • Recognise that youth want to hang out with their friends in youth space.
  • When asked, all youth know that anyone could access their profiles online. Yet, the most common response I receive is “…but why would they?”
  • The Internet mirrors and magnifies all aspects of social life.
    • Jeremy Price

Consistent with capturing/recording interactions in general.
  • When a teen is engaged in risky behaviour online, that is typically a sign that they’re engaged in risky behaviour offline.
  • technology makes it easier to find those who are seeking attention than those who are not.
  • Questions abound. There are no truths, only conversations.
  • They can posit moral conundrums, show how mediated publics differ from unmediated ones, invite youth to consider the potential consequences of their actions, and otherwise educate through conversation instead of the assertion of power.
  • group settings are ideal for engaging youth to consider their relationship with social technologies and mediated publics
  • Internet safety is on the tip of most educators’ tongues, but much of what needs to be discussed goes beyond safety. It is about setting norms and considering how different actions will be interpreted.
  • Create a profile on whatever sites are popular in your school.
  • Keep your profile public and responsible, but not lame.
  • Do not go surfing for your students, but if they invite you to be Friends, say yes. This is a sign that they respect you.
  • The more present you are, the more opportunity you have to influence the norms.

Fantastic web app to use for ESL classes because it is so much more than a traditional dictionary... "What is Wordnik? Wordnik wants to be a place for all the words, and everything known about them. Traditional dictionaries make you wait until they've found what they consider to be "enough" information about a word before they will show it to you. Wordnik knows you don't want to wait-if you're interested in a word, we're interested too! Our goal is to show you as much information as possible, just as fast as we can find it, for every word in English, and to give you a place where you can make your own opinions about words known. By "information," we don't just mean traditional definitions (although we have plenty of those)! This information could be: * An example sentence-even if we've only found one sentence for a word, we'll show it to you. (And we'll show you where the sentence came from, too! * Related words: not just synonyms and antonyms, but words that are used in the same contexts. (For instance, cheeseburger, milkshake, and doughnut are not synonyms, but they show up in the same kinds of sentences.) * Images tagged by our friends at Flickr: want to know what a "pout" looks like? We'll show you. * Statistics: how rare is "tintinnabulation"? Well, we think you'll see it only about once a year. "Smile"? You might see that word many times, every day. * An audio pronunciation-and you can record your own! * Something YOU tell us! Use the "Contribute" links to tell us something-anything-about a word.

Facebook Applications for Learning - 2009 - ASTD - 1 views

  •
According to the Educause report 7 Things You should Know About Facebook, "Facebook's structure encourages users to view relationships in a broad context of learning, even as affiliations change-from high school to college to graduate school to the workplace. By opening itself to virtually anyone, Facebook has become a model for how communities-of learners, of workers, of any group with a common interest-can come together, define standards for interaction, and collaboratively create an environment that suits the needs of the members." Indeed, there are countless other articles touting the benefits of Facebook and detailing why we should be using it in our various learning solutions. However, concrete advice on how to use Facebook has proven difficult to find. Check out these applications that represent some of the ideal tools Facebook has to offer online learning.

Presenting UpsideLMS Version 4.0 | Upside Learning Blog - 1 views

  • Today we reach a significant milestone as we release UpsideLMS Version 4.0 - a comprehensive, fully-featured learning management system delivered on a robust, scalable and reliable architecture. It’s extremely satisfying for me personally as the chief architect of the system since its first release.  Here I am sharing a quick overview of what’s new in Version 4.0 and I encourage you to take a tour OR a trial and let me know of your thoughts on the latest version of our product.
  •
UpsideLMS Version 4.0 now comes in two variants (that run on the same robust and scalable architecture) - UpsideLMS Professional and UpsideLMS Enterprise. UpsideLMS Professional is designed and packaged specifically for SMBs and Training companies where the need for an LMS is to efficiently manage learning data, large number and churn of users and the need to quickly configure training with a high degree of flexibility. Additionally, it meets the needs of training companies for an easy way to manage multiple customers through a single system that include licensing and branding control and to have an eCommerce module. UpsideLMS Enterprise is for large enterprises that need the LMS to manage learning within the context of an organizational hierarchy, and tight links to a competency framework; they also tend to require solutions that are scalable.

On self-paced learning | Virtual Canuck - 10 views

...self paced learning will become increasing popular as a model of education for all students and especially for busy working adults. The tools that support time shifted and asynchronous interaction in these contexts are as yet in primitive states and as importantly students and teachers have little experience in effectively managing their own learning pace.
