CoSN has long recognized that superintendents can make or break technology initiatives. Project Tomorrow has just released the Speak Up 2007 National Findings. Over 319,223 students, 25,544 teachers, 19,726 parents and 3,263 school leaders shared their ideas through Speak Up 2007 surveys. From their website: Speak Up 2007 revealed a growing "digital disconnect" between students and their teachers and parents about the role of technology for learning, and how well schools are preparing students for the jobs of the future.

We need financial support, visionary leaders, moral compasses, inspiring role models, enriching professional development, and meaningful collaboration. We also need minimally restricted content and unlimited access… these are all building blocks that 'increase the frequency of guiding coincidences'… these are the things that inspire us, fuel us, connect us, and allow us to see the potential in ourselves and each other. If America wants to continue to be a world-leader, we can do it with a technology advantage - but only if we actually know how to leverage that technology to continue to be more productive. So, I began to write out a list of the tech skills that I think students should learn before they leave college. Ideally, these are skills that would be integrated throughout K-12 and college curricula.

A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But what he's doing is so simple, it's almost instructional. This is key. You must be easy to follow! Now comes the first follower with a crucial role: he publicly shows everyone how to follow.
