What is Wolfram Alpha? It is a supercomputing brain. It provides calculates and provides comprehensive answers to most any science or math question. Unlike other search sources, you and your students can ask questions in plain language or various forms of abbreviated notation. Contrary to popular belief, Wolfram Alpha is not a search engine. Unlike popular search engines, which simply retrieve documents based on keyword searches, Wolfram computes answers based on known models of human knowledge. It provides answers which are complete with data and algorithms, representing real-world knowledge.

Really simple: write an e-mail, and then have it sent to yourself at the specified date in the future. Use it for time capsule projects, or just for reminders. You can set it private or public, and you can even read the public ones.

Not everyone keeps up with statistics and visualization tools, but although Google has the functionality it purchased and now a project of Google labs, it has changed and added the "public data" options. If you can find public data on computers/technology etc. it could be included in the public data sets ( current list at the bottom of the Google labs page)

The jockey's searches are displayed simultaneously with the presentation, helping to clarify the main topic and extend learning opportunities. EduCon 2.1 is both a conversation and a conference. And it is not a technology conference. It is an education conference. It is, hopefully, an innovation conference where we can come together, both in person and virtually, to discuss the future of schools. Every session will be an opportunity to discuss and debate ideas -- from the very practical to the big dreams.

Ideas I'm thinking of sharing on SEEDLINGS Oct. 30th.

* In spending so much time to create (shallow?) connections with such a wide range of educators on a global level, isn't it possible that one might also neglect local relationships that are equally (if not more) important? * What can we do to consistently maintain a healthy perspective? Shifting gears to a higher plane: * Do we really think that all teachers need to be this connected? * Can every teacher (human being) handle all of the information? Are they "bad teachers" if they can't? * And what about those teachers that take 25 minutes just to create a Gmail account (PEBKAC)? Will it really be worth my time - and theirs - to help them enter the 21st Century? Or are the benefits of such efforts simply not worth the costs? I guess what I'm really wondering is this: * Is it ever OK to simply leave some teachers behind?

We watched an example of a student-produced film about the bombing of Hiroshima and discussed how we would assess it. It was difficult to say since we weren't the ones that gave the assignment, but it got the conversation started. Our speaker said that in many cases a scoring guide (i.e., rubric) isn't even provided, or the scoring guide focuses exclusively on the mechanics of the product (e.g., number of images, number of PowerPoint slides). Too often, she says, the product is simply turned in without the kind of serious assessment that we usually give to more traditional writing assignments. I've observed this over the years as well, and have often felt like technological glitz has been substituted for high quality content. This is especially common with teachers who may not be very technosavvy themselves and may be more likely to be overly impressed with the polish that modern ditial tools can impart without any effort on the part of the student.
