Dr. George Siemens is one of the intellectual founders of connectivism. Makes sense to get the overview directly from him, right?
  •
Dr Siemens reflects on the conditions that led to the development of his theory of connectivism. In this context he provides an introduction to the topic.
  •
Tim, I loved learning how Dr. Siemens came up with his theory of Connectivism. Thank you!
  •
I enjoyed this YouTube video by Dr. Siemens. The idea that Connectivism is a "social connected process of learning" sets his theory apart from other learning theories.
  •
Dr. Siemens testimony regarding his own experience with and exploration of contectivism helps to cement the multiple reading and resources that can be found all over the internet. His simple and easy to follow explanation creates a solid base from which one can expand their understanding of the theory and how it is put into practice.
  •
Siemens explains what connectivism is and how it originated. After reading many articles by the reseracher, it was beneficial to see and hear him discuss connectivism. Enjoy the video!
  •
I liked this brief explanation that comes straight from the source! In essence, I think watching the video and listening to a person explain it solidified it faster than multiple articles, thus illustrating the concepts of connectivism.

Thanks for sharing, David. I like that Mackley and Vincent show the various branches of their PLNs because it gives me a frame of reference and helps me see where I need to focus my own efforts. I find the concept of the PLE to be fuzzy, and feel that I need to learn more about it and its relationship to the PLN.
  •
I liked this source because of the clear descriptions that it provides. I also loved the visuals at the end with the different networks that they are tied to.
  •
This article does a nice job of explaining PLNs and the theory surrounding them. The article includes definitions of personal learning environments, personal learning networks, and connectivism. I also like that it includes diagrams to compare their PLNs, as well as an introductory video.
  •
I picked this one, because it has a video that I found helpful. I learn better with sound and pictures. It stresses that PLNs are not things, but rather ideas. The other reason that I include this in my list is that the article actually provides diagrams of what different people's PLNs look like. Given that we're learning about this sort of thing in this unit, I thought I'd also mention this. Finally, I liked that this article acknowledges that according to the Theory of Connectivism, you don't even have to know the person who you're learning from.
  •
This article features an easy to digest definition of personal learning networks which includes a connection to connectivism in explanation of how PLNs work. The resource is made even more accessible in helping a reader understand the subject matter with a video and infographic examples of the authors own personal PLNs.
  •
This article gives a brief overview of PLNs and the theories behind them. It explains connectivism and its role in the benefits of PLNs. It also gives two examples of the authors' PLNs in the form of graphics.

(6) Networks vs. Communities of Practice - YouTube - 4 views

  •
Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach explains the clear distinction between networks and Communities of Practice. She addressed that her Personal Learning Network has a lot of different non-educators from all walks of like helping to frame who she is and who she is not. The difference is in a Community of Practice, "we are all educators, we're all shipbuilder, we're all dry cleaner workers interested in improving over time." She makes the point that members of a CoP are committed to each other and to growth. She also stresses Co-Created Content and Co-Created Community in a CoP.

I like how clearly the difference between CoPs and PLNs are explained. CoPs are co-owned and there is a commitment to create together and work together. "The best communities of practice aren't just a framework for delivering the status quo" ... they become "a vehicle for systemic change'. A short and effective presentation.
  •
I enjoyed this video. I liked how the speak said, "A community of practice is a situated learning community". I thought that this was a thoughtful, short effective presentation. I also liked that fact that she talked about co-created content. I think that is an important point. Thank you for sharing.!
