Connectivism in the Gifted Classroom - 1 views

  •
This blog post does not simply apply to the gifted classroom. Connectivism can be used to benefit any classroom and group of learners.
  •
Siemens video explaining his experience with Connectivism is very interesting. Explaining the qualities of connectivist teachers was also interesting and made some great connections between gifted and regular classrooms.

Connectivism: New Paradigm or Fascinating Pot-Pourri? - 0 views

  •
"We do not always construct, but always connect". This line is the central philosophy in this article that argues about the importance of online educational and informational fields in the connection of information. One interesting piece that is identified is in reference to schools and connectivism. The author illustrates that simply putting technology into the hands of students to access the web will not produce learning. As many of us have talked about in the EdTech program, simply using e-learning does not produce learning. However, the theory of connectivism argues that it can strengthen information and learning while also producing areas for students to collaborate and learn later on.

Supporting Self- Directed Learning by Connectivism and Personal Learning Environments - 4 views

  •
This article explores self-directed learning via connectivism and other learning theories.
  •
I appreciated this article for a couple of reasons - research on self-directed learning (Yay!) and one of the conclusions that indicates that this is one of the more challenging environments for students. That means that if we ask students to be more self-directed and use the tools and resources that are "out there" and freely available, we need to provide some strategies and guidance on where to look, how to evaluate the information and how to network for learning.
  •
I think that this is a good resource. It was really interesting to learn about connectivism and personal learning environments from a research study point of view. I believe that this source is a good way to learn about the growing needs of our students in the digital era. The source suggests that students need to be able to take control over their education in order to be truly successful.

What is Connectivism? - 2 views

  •
This GoogleDoc by George Siemens provides a great visual to help describe the differences between connectivism and other learning theories (behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism). He created a table listing different properties and then briefly lists how each theory explains those properties. He then lists several characteristics that are distinct about connectivism.
  •
First of all I wanted to point out how much I love that in the digital age we are so connected to each other that a Google Doc put out by Siemens can be shared with the world. Information is so readily available. This table definitely speaks to my style of learning, it is easy to view and compare the different learning theories that he breaks down. You can read multiple paragraphs about each, but to see it in a chart clarifies it all.

The Value of Connectivism -- THE Journal - 1 views

  •
In this article by Patricia Deubel, Ph.D., she states how connectivism is a learning process that is continuously changing. What an individual learns is always changing and that certain internet tools have clouded the quality online. However, she discusses Siemen's learning ecology such as a variety of learner types (beginning to advanced) as well as different spaces to work on what the individual is looking to accomplish.

Interview with George Siemens - 1 views

  •
Dr. George Siemens discusses his experiences with connectivism and how it reshaped his perceptions of the relationship between student, teacher, and information. He believes in this newly inter-connected world, knowledge itself becomes even more of a network. Beyond the network connections in the brain, the social networks on the internet have become a new way for people to know, understand, and retain information.
  •
It's hard for me to believe that blogs have been around for more than 15 years ago! He's been blogging since the "late 90s, early 2000s." I appreciate his idea that learning is really a socially connected process because of technology.
  •
Dr. George Siemens offers his backstory on how he came to create the theory of Connectivism and how it really relates to learning. He articulates why Connectivism is different from Constructivism or any other previous theory.

Connectivism: Foundations of Learning and Instructional Design Technology - 2 views

  •
Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age by George Siemens was reprinted in an online textbook called "Foundations of Learning and Instructional Design Technology." In the article, Siemens explains that the three oldest learning theories were based on a time when we lacked technology. He goes on to discuss the limitations each of the theories has on the individual that is exposed to technology. He then discusses Connectivism and how it impacts learning in the digital-age.

A Brief Overview of 4 Learning Theories - YouTube - 0 views

  •
This video is not strictly about connectivism. With that being said the part about connectivism was very informative even though it was rather short. It starts talking about connectivism at about the 4:25 mark.
  •
I agree that this explanation is a good one. It describes it as Digital Age Learning and a creative process. The teachers are then responsible to nurture the connections that the students are making but still letting the students drive the process. Thanks for sharing!
