Technology and Education | Box of Tricks - 2 views

  • The rising importance and availability of online social networks and their popularity among young people in particular cannot be dismissed, putting the use of ICT at the heart of 21st century interconnectivity in all areas of society, not just education.
    • anonymous

Yes! ICT should be a the heart of 21st century eduation.
  • Pedagogy, in my opinion, needs to reflect these social changes and conform to the needs and expectations of today’s students and, if we teach them in a way that mirrors how they live their lives when they are not in school, if we help to ensure that the gap between their school life and real life is minimised, we then become better able to guarantee the commitment and engagement of the vast majority of our students.

  • Using ICT with a focus on the C for Communication is, in my view, the next logical step and would allow us to bring the learning online and to blend the use of traditional tools such as textbooks or dictionaries with more up-to-date, relevant and authentic multimedia materials from the web. Microblogging would provide teachers and students with a platform in which they could interact beyond the constraints of the school walls, and with which the teacher could provide further personalised feedback and support.

  • When students log on to Edmodo for the first time, they are prompted to enter the unique code generated for their class and thus both teacher and student accounts become linked and the can begin communication privately and safely.
  • lear that better communication between school and home, between teachers and students is, not only desirable, but also essential in a world in which technology is continually discovering and developing new, exciting and useful ways of improving communication between people. In a sense, our students have tasted the proverbial honey and the move towards this type of social interaction in the fiel

Project K-Nect Math Initiative - 0 views

  •
Project K-Nect is designed to create a supplemental resource for secondary at-risk students to focus on increasing their math skills through a common and popular technology - mobile smartphones.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Project K-Nect provided smartphones to allow students to communicate and collaborate with teachers, tutors, and other students. This technology allowed the students the ability to master math skills and knowledge.
  •
In North Carolina, about 100 ninth-grade students in four schools in North Carolina have been issued smartphones for use in their math classes. They use the phones to network among themselves on problems, receive instruction from teachers, play math-improving games, or watch an animation showing the problem being solved.
  •
Through a grant from a smartphone maker, students were given devices that would allow them to contact other students and tutors about math problems when not at school. It also gave them access to materials for class that they otherwise would not have had away from school. While this wouldn't be applicable in all schools, the social networking aspect of the program helped students better manage their personal learning experience.

The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. Questions on the contests never require any mathematics beyond the grade level tested. They're fun too! In addition, clicking on the 'Help Facility' link offers students, parents, and teachers additional strategies for review and explanation of key skills.

elearnspace. everything elearning: About George Siemens - 2 views

I bookmarked this as an extra site. It does not appear to be currently updated, but is George Siemens' personal website. There is a good link to a PDF of his book, Knowing Knowledge (2006).
  •
The site didn't seem all that informative, but the links to the PDF books make up for what the page is lacking. These two books should provide some good reference materials.

GoNoodle | Movement and Mindfulness for Kids - 3 views

  •
This is a new site that I like to visit with students. It allows the opportunity for them to take a brain break and pick which activity they do. What I enjoy is that there are calming ones that we can use when they come in from recess/lunch and dancing ones for after a long test/lesson.
  •
This is my favorite website for elementary kids to get some wiggles out. The kids love the variety of activities, along with getting "points" and then leveling up to different characters. I love the site because I have the ability to choose an amount of time for the students to engage in physical activity and what I want to focus on. I made "Choose the Go Noodle" reward cards for homework winners.
  •
Great site for integrating brain breaks and physical activity throughout the day. Connections to content material as well.

Great idea to put a teacher Instagram account in the group! Instagram could work as an excellent resource to support a personal learning network for educators. I currently have an Instagram, but I don't post any school-related material. I will need to alter my approach to Instagram. Thanks for the suggestion!
