Instagram Challenge | Laura Randazzo - Solutions for the Secondary Classroom - 0 views

    This project has students using Instagram to post pictures that are related to the book they are reading. For this project, students were asked to select one line from the first two chapters of the book they were reading. They were asked to find a picture somewhere around their school that related to the line they selected and take a selfie with it as well. The final step was to post their picture with their quote as the caption using the classes hashtag. I like this assignment because students can select whatever part of the reading speaks to them the most and find a way to represent this visually. This pushes students to look deeper into what they are reading. Additionally, time can be spent looking at other posts made by other students and further depth can be added to the novel. This is a quick and easy task that can be done every few chapters for any novel. I could see myself using this project to supplement the reading being done in my class.

    Summary: This user-friendly article discusses what CoPs are and what they look like. I appreciated the fact that Etienne Wenger says a CoP could be " … a tribe learning to survive, a band of artists seeking new forms of expression, a group of engineers working on similar problems, a clique of pupils defining their identity in the school, a network of surgeons exploring novel techniques, a gathering of first-time managers helping each other cope." However, he also adds, that sharing the same job or the same job title doesn't mean you are part of a CoP. A true community must interact and learn together! This article provides a great starting point for those who do not know much about CoP and / or where the concept came from.

    I really enjoyed the author's writing style which included metaphors and lots of examples and non-examples of COP. I noticed this blog post was 2006, and so I was curious what the author had been involved with since this post, especially since he points out the importance of sustained interaction. This is a free system to use and anyone can create and grant their own custom badges. From a school standpoint this becomes interesting to me since it gives students and community stakeholders an opportunity to show that an individual has mastered skills that are taught outside of school.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie, Book - Barnes & Noble - 0 views

The bright 14-year-old was born with water on the brain, is regularly the target of bullies, and loves to draw. He says, "I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods, and my cartoons are tiny little lifeboats." He expects disaster when he transfers from the reservation school to the rich, white school in Reardan, but soon finds himself making friends with both geeky and popular students and starting on the basketball team. Meeting his old classmates on the court, Junior grapples with questions about what constitutes one's community, identity, and tribe. The daily struggles of reservation life and the tragic deaths of the protagonist's grandmother, dog, and older sister would be all but unbearable without the humor and resilience of spirit with which Junior faces the world. The many characters, on and off the rez, with whom he has dealings are portrayed with compassion and verve, particularly the adults in his extended family. Forney's simple pencil cartoons fit perfectly within the story and reflect the burgeoning artist within Junior. Reluctant readers can even skim the pictures and construct their own story based exclusively on Forney's illustrations. The teen's determination to both improve himself and overcome poverty, despite the handicaps of birth, circumstances, and race, delivers a positive message in a low-key manner. Alexie's tale of self-discovery is a first purchase for all libraries.

Stotan Unplugged: In Defense of Name-Calling - 1 views

  • First, a disclaimer.  I didn’t say it because Sherman’s stunningly accomplished novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, gets challenged and banned in “conservative” communities with chilling regularity because of realistic language, a hilarious masturbation scene and a mirthfully scathing indictment of the difficulties of a young outsider finding his way through institutional racism.  I said it because Sherman is a member of the only group in our country who can legitimately lay claim to taking their country back.
  • I’m in Chicago today, hosting the American Library Association’s Great Chicago Readout, kicking off our celebration of Banned Books Week with authors of some of the top ten banned books of 2010.  I look over the list of reasons for the challenges and bannings: religious perspective, homosexual content, sexual content, offensive language, suicide.  Human things.  Things the people who want to “take our country back” don’t want kids to talk about; human things the “conservative right” doesn’t think should be part of human education.  Wow.

Character journaling through social media - 0 views

    This project also has students making a Facebook account for their character and using these accounts to communicate with other students. This is similar to the remixing assignment, but it is a long-term assignment rather than a culminating activity. Students start by making a Facebook page for their character and post status updates as the class reads the book. They talk from the perspective of their character and it allows students to expand their thinking. When students are done, they use their page to have discussions about the novel as a class and out of character. This is a great way for students to step into the chose of different characters they are reading about and has students participate in multi-level writing. This is applicable to numerous different reading projects and something I could see myself using in my English class.

Remixing To Kill a Mockingbird | The Macmillan Community - 0 views

    This project has students retelling a story through the use of a social media account. For this project, the story of To Kill a Mockingbird was retold with an Instagram account. The account was made from the perspective of the main character and pictures were added with different captions to explain the story. This allowed the students to use contemporary social media norms in the context of older stories. I like this project because it forces students to highlight the key points of a novel without simply writing them all out. If everyone in the class was using the same platform, they could add each other and comment on each other's posts. This would be a good way for students to see stories from the eyes of their character and add new layers of depth to stories. This is an idea that can be used with many different social media platforms and with many different stories. To Kill a Mockingbird is read by the Freshman in my district and this is a project I could see myself using.

    How two teachers put into practice a connected network of learners. This article features two teachers who worked to connect their students across the globe. Both classes in California and South Africa joined via Twitter, Skype and blogging as they read and experienced a shared novel. Each class offered different learning opportunities. The learners grew as readers and writers, but also as a community of connected learners.
