    An introduction to Communities of Practice which provides a well written yet concise overview of the systems organization and application in the real world.

    Summary: This user-friendly article discusses what CoPs are and what they look like. I appreciated the fact that Etienne Wenger says a CoP could be " … a tribe learning to survive, a band of artists seeking new forms of expression, a group of engineers working on similar problems, a clique of pupils defining their identity in the school, a network of surgeons exploring novel techniques, a gathering of first-time managers helping each other cope." However, he also adds, that sharing the same job or the same job title doesn't mean you are part of a CoP. A true community must interact and learn together! This article provides a great starting point for those who do not know much about CoP and / or where the concept came from.

    I really enjoyed the author's writing style which included metaphors and lots of examples and non-examples of COP. I noticed this blog post was 2006, and so I was curious what the author had been involved with since this post, especially since he points out the importance of sustained interaction.     Denscombe argues that a research paradigm based on communities of practice might be the flexible multi-layered approach needed for mixed methods research. The basis of communities of practice states that learning is a collective activity and knowledge is shared. Mixed methods researchers share practices in a more formal paradigm than that of communities of practice; however, those communities of practice could still create the new paradigm that mixed methods needs. More research is needed to determine this for sure.

    I really like this article because of the role of the teacher being discussed in great detail. I think that in Connectivism I was confused about the role of the teacher especially when it came to filtering information. I feel like now I have a better understanding of how the teacher acting as a filter in the initial stages of the lesson can lead to students being autonomous and filtering sources later on.

    Alyssa, I appreciate that fact that you highlight the role of the teacher here. I sometimes feel lost in the world of learning theory as I tend to teach between them. That is, my teaching is a mixture of many different theories. I really like the idea of the teacher being the filter.

    This is a great article. It starts with business and but then moves into teaching and how connectivism changes out roles. I love how it states that learners are not confined to one person's beliefs. It brings up outcomes/assessment and relates them to real-life. Thank you!

    Explains the role creation plays as a component of connecting. Creating artifacts and participating in activities forms knowledge connections, that are most desirable in an open space with open content. The formation of new connections can lead to the redistribution of power in society.

    The visuals of networks (among people and space) were powerful. I agree that one of the most impressive features of a MOOC is the creation of peer networks.

    I really liked how the author began with demonstrating networks and then showed how learning is also a network. Shelly was right in that it is very powerful to see as a visual.

    In this article, the authors attempt to explain personal learning environments through many learning theories. One mentioned is socio-cultural, "where knowledge is seen to be situated in its context, avoiding a curriculum dominated by the teacher as expert". I think this really explains personal learnin networkds very well. Along with socio-cultural, the article proposes a new learning model based on these personal learning networks.

What is the unique idea in connectivism? - 0 views

    In this blog post, George Siemens discusses the theories connectivism builds on (all "new" ideas are really "old" ideas presented in today's context), and he puts forth several concepts he suggests are "unique" to the connectivist theory. One of these is the inclusion of technology as a key player in creating, housing, and extending knowledge and the process of learning.

    Very interesting back and forth between George and Gary Stager. I really enjoyed this quote "new idea is often an old idea in today's context". I also enjoyed that the details of of where connectivism originated, as well as some orginal unique ideas that he feels connectivism brings such as applying network principals to a larger theory in learning. Great find!

    I really appreciated the gently sarcastic tone George starts with especially when he quotes Gary Stager! The 8 points on the origins of Constructivism resonated with me too. The responses to his article are almost as interesting as the article itself. Thanks for sharing this.
