What do Connections do? - 4 views

  •
Explains the role creation plays as a component of connecting. Creating artifacts and participating in activities forms knowledge connections, that are most desirable in an open space with open content. The formation of new connections can lead to the redistribution of power in society.
  •
The visuals of networks (among people and space) were powerful. I agree that one of the most impressive features of a MOOC is the creation of peer networks.
  •
I really liked how the author began with demonstrating networks and then showed how learning is also a network. Shelly was right in that it is very powerful to see as a visual.

Personal Learning Network - 2 views

  •
This article from the University of Illinois describes in depth a PLN and discusses why teachers need to have one online. It also discuses getting your students to build their own.
  •
I think that this is a great idea. Teachers need to model the behavior so that students can see appropriate behavior. Teachers will also be prepared to recognize when students are delving into places that might be dangerous for them and can even teach best practices to students from a wealth of experience.

Great set of slides. Gives a good overview of the benefits of Personal Learning Networks and simple ways to create one. It seems that the intended audience was teachers, but I think this would be especially useful for instructors to share with their students. The link to the Will Richardson youtube interview was very interesting and thoughtful. I had never heard of him before, but his remarks were quite insightful.

Social Networking and PLN's - 0 views

This article discusses PLN's and how they are fantastic for research and gathering information, but if we teach students how to incorporate blogs, and social networking into their PLN's the wealth of information available to them greatly increases.

Vygotsky, ZPD, Scaffolding, Connectivism and Personal Learning Networks | Brains - 5 views

  •
This blog post describes the relationship between Lev Vygotsky's idea of the zone of proximal development and Jerome Bruner's concept of scaffolding. The practical applications of connectivism and PLNs are not explored much in this post, but the theoretical connections are valuable.
  •
Hi Jamie, I am a huge fan of the zone of proximal development. I think the application with PLNs is such an interesting concept. I am glad that you connected the theory to the practice. Thanks for sharing.

The future of e-learning is social learning - 1 views

  •
This slide share touches on what social learning is.  It suggests that people learn a great deal of information on their own and in their own manners--sometimes just by talking to others.  It focuses on the need for a tool or web software that promotes social and informal learning but still takes into account data privacy and security.

Fakebook - 1 views

  •
"Fakebook" allows teachers and students to create imaginary profile pages for study purposes. Use "Fakebook" to make a fake Facebook page for a historical or fictional character or chart the plot of a book, the development of a character, a series of historical events, the debates and relationships between people, and so on!

Personal Learning Networks: Creating Life Long Learning By: Pam Murray - 2 views

This is one of the few resources I decided to use that was not found at scholar.google.com but rather a simple Google search. I choose this power point because it breaks down Personal Learning networks in digestible pieces easy to understand. Within the presentation Pam does a great job establishing the importance for teachers themselves to establish their own PLN's to not only benefit themselves but also their students that will be learning from them as well. She goes on to describe what a PLN is and the benefits they offer. What I like most about Pam's presentation is that she includes ways to set up popular PLN's from scratch such as RSS readers, blogs, twitter, and professional networks as well. The quick points and step by step processes made this a standout resource for me when learning about personal learning networks.
