Put to the Test: Study Island - 2 views

  •
This evaluation fof Study Island promotes it as a great way to make sure kids learn the state standards and become proficient.

My son who is in the 7th grade disagrees with the evaluation of Study Island. He finds it to be boring with crude graphics. The one benefit to Study Island however, is a student can practice from home if he or she choses to.
  •
I have spent many hours with students as they work on Study Island, and I believe that they aren't as enthusiastic about the program as adults are. What I have noticed from the teachers is that Study Island is a good babysitter and a way to kill time. I'm not so sure I would give the program credit for boosting test scores.
  •
I have had nothing but bad experiences with study island. Much like many things, the idea is better than the reality. Even though the system "times out" when the computer senses the student is guessing, the students just take a ten second break then get right back to guessing.

iPads in the Classroom are Changing the Face of Education | Mac|Life - 0 views

  • In the Auburn School District, administrators are using the iPad in controlled areas to prove its efficacy in raising literacy rates and teaching mathematical skills.
  • In the study, half of the 16 kindergarten classrooms were randomly assigned iPads to use for nine weeks, and they showed increased improvement results over the non-iPad classrooms
  • “The iPad had interesting possibilities in terms of helping students access what they know [while interacting] in a very different way with material and information.”

This article is about integrating ipads into the classroom.I found this article to be very interesting because Fairfield County is wanting to adopt ipads in their school district, and I wont lie I was very hesitant on that idea, but after reading this and seeing the extensive studies that have been done, I think it could be very beneficial.

Ideas for Seventh Grade English to study - 1 views

  •
I checked this out just to see what potentials for novels and plays for seventh graders to study. Just a thought, why do English teachers keep teaching the same old books? Some of the stuff that I found was stuff that I was taught back when I was all three levels of school. Isn't time to update the reading list to stuff that has be written in last 20 years or even more recent instead of stuff that is outdated by like 50 or 100 years ago. I can't complain about Mark Twain though. I do like his writing. But Julie and the Wolves, The Outsiders, The Giver?

  •
This article is about making ancient civilizations into 3-D virtual worlds where people can log on and virtually explore these ancient worlds. This would be an excellent tool for social studies. Students can now have a more hands-on approach to learning about ancient civilizations.

Creating an Ultra-Flexible Learning Space -- THE Journal - 1 views

I found this article very interesting! The classroom was more like an office. The students have their own personal learning desks and cubicles. I think that learning will be maximized when each students individual needs are met, and they are in this classroom Designers of the Minnesota School of Environmental Studies (SES) were years ahead of the curve when it came to creating collaborative classrooms that would one day accommodate learning technologies that in 1995 had yet to be conceived--let alone developed and marketed to the educational sector.

This article was interesting for me to read being a teacher! I think that it's very cool that they have students desks look more like offices. This school is called the "Zoo School" and it serves 400 students in the 11th and 12th grade. They get to customize their workstations like employees do at work! They don't get taught at their desks they all get back together and sit at a longer table much like college and learn that way! I think this is neat and a different idea! They said in their article that the students were "thriving here" so I think they have caught on to something wonderful!

Gauging The Effectiveness of Technology in Schools - 0 views

  •
I was excited to read an article that finally provided me a useful basis of technology in a math class. I was really surprised to read that sciences seem to be the subject that is lagging with tech integration. I realize science is a very hands-on subject, but I would think it would have been a much easier transition, than math.

Moodle - 0 views

This was in use in the classroom I observed during Winter Quarter. It was an excellent tool for the teacher to use, not only to post grades, but to offer kids study guides, etc., that they could access from home. They could also log on from home to complete lessons, etc. And, best of all, it is FREE. With school's on such tight budgets, free products are excelent!

Robotic Learning - 1 views

  •
Chilling and interesting are the two words I would describe this article. This article discusses the benefits of having robots assist the teacher. The robots would be very life-life and interactive, being able to detect and response in the right emotions. There is already a study with a robot interacting with 18-to-24 months old kids. That robot only costs 500 dollars to manufacture. Looks like we could be out of a job in a few years' time...haha.

Here is an article that discusses how games can be integrated into the classroom and be used for learning purposes using technology such as computers and augmented reality devices. It also discusses the challenges that they have faced creating and implementing these games into a learning environment and the challenges that they feel they'll have to face to make it more successful.

Great article. Chris Dede is brilliant - I've been studying with him the last two semesters and have played Alien Contact. In fact, I am currently working on developing an augmented reality tour of the Black Heritage Trail in Boston. This is a website from the Miller Center of Public Affairs from the University of Virginia. It has a good deal of information about each president with a multimedia gallery for each president as well(mostly pictures). For social studies teachers with a focus on US history and particularly the presidents of the U.S. this is a great website.

Pros And Cons Of iPads In The Classroom - Forbes - 0 views

From smartphones to tablets, Wi-Fi to 3G/4G: I cover telecom & mobile. Conventional wisdom says that loaning Apple's bestselling iPad to college students would be a popular move. A seven-week-long study by the University of Notre Dame found that students did indeed like learning with the tablet computers, but that they used the devices differently than was expected.
