8847 MULTIMEDIA/8847 ACTIVE LEARNING
Module 1 Selecting web sites with multimedia artifacts
I have chosen to develop a multimedia workshop on the topic of Designing web pages for educators and classroom instruction. I have chosen three web sites that include artifacts for active learning. I have identified each website as promoting behavioral and/ or cognitive learning. Mayer (2009), found multimedia is a powerful tool used to enhance human learning; therefore, I have determined whether each website uses a technology-centered or learner-centered approach to multimedia design.
Multimedia Artifacts Websites
http://www.2createawebsite.com/design/artisteer-review.html
This site provides a video tutorial on how to use Artisteer to build a web site. The instructor narrates a brief tutorial (9 minutes) for creating a web site. The active engagement focuses on cognitive activity during the learning because the learner listens to instructions and does not use the computer as the instructions are relayed to the user. The learner does not have to click to manipulate the computer because he or she watches the video and tries to make sense of the material (Mayer, 2009). This tutorial is using a technology-centered approach because the instructor focuses on how the learner can access technology to create a web page. (Mayer, 2009). The active engagement in this tutorial focuses on cognitive activity because the learner listens while the material is presented. The learner does not interact with the instructor.
http://how-to-build-websites.com/
This website is using a technology-centered approach to learning because the learner uses technology to access the materials that he might need to build a web page. The learner uses cognitive activity rather than behavioral because the learner reads instructions and tries to make sense of the materials that are needed to build a web site (Mayer, 2009). The learner does not engage in behavioral activity during the tutorial because he or she watches a video and follows instructions to create a web page.
http://www.tizag.com/beginnerT/
This web site provides written instructions the learner might use to design a web page from HTML. The learner needs to have prior knowledge of HTML. The learner opens Notepad, reads the instructions from the tutorial and performs the steps as instructed. According to Mayer (2009) this artifact is an example of active and behavior learning because the learner reads material and demonstrates what he or she has learned by following a series of instructions and tries to make sense of the material (Mayer, 2009). This artifact uses a technology-centered approach to access materials.
