PollEverywhere - Text Message (SMS) Polls and Voting - 0 views

This is a free poll site that can be embedded into a PowerPoint so results show as folks vote. Really cool -- and did I say "free"?????????????

Poll everywhere allows for polls, simple quizzes, text based responses from an audience. It is a tool for gathering data and opinions from an audience. It is free unless you want to use more expansive tools.
  •
Diagnostic assessments drive the instruction process, when teachers/presenters know what the students know, need to know or wonder about. Poll Everywhere is an audience response system using standard web technology. It works through text, web, or Twitter, its simplicity and flexibility are earning rave reviews. I love it because responses show up immediately on the screen, allowing the instructor to create a chart, or just show responses. This is a free web-based program for up to 30 responders.

This website allows a user to develop online polls that learners in a workshop/presentation can participate in. With regard to pre-training activities, quick polls can help both learners and the instructor quickly gauge what the learners know before digging into the planned activities. In addition, polls can be designed to engage learners and prepare them for some of the activities they will participate in. The product available at this website provides free access for designing quick polls. It also allows the designer to choose how participants respond to the polls. In addition to text messaging, the designer can use a web address (if mobile devices are not convenient for the setting) to allow easy access. In addition to the interactive capabilities, the polls can be seamlessly integrated into a PowerPoint presentation or website.

Center for Universal Design - 0 views

  •
The Center for Universal Design website of the College of Design of NC State University claims to be designed to promote accessible and universal design in housing, commercial and public facilities, outdoor environments, and products. Though, it's not about web design per se, covers nonetheless the essentials of what I want faculty to understand about Universal Design in creating their websites. The multimedia artifact on this page is picture and text but it is presented in a way that engages the learner. The headings are reasonably big and color coded. The images are relevant and positioned in a manner that facilitates learning without focusing the learner's attention too much on the graphics. I would say that this workshop is also learner-centered.

The Reflective School by Peter Pappas by Peter Pappas on Prezi - 0 views

  •
In this Prezi, Pappas (2011) has designed a presentation that prompts the viewer to think about the reflective culture of a school. Coupled with the content in Pappas' (2010, January) blog series, "A Taxonomy of Reflection: Critical Thinking for Students, Teachers and Principals," a learner-centered orientation to the process and importance of reflection in schools and learning is achieved. Embedded in the presentation itself are prompts to gain viewers' attention and provide opportunities to consider questions relevant to the content. As noted by Mayer (Laureate Education, 2010), the effectiveness of a technology is based on its application, guided by instructional method. While Prezi is receiving a lot of enthusiasm as an alternative to Power Point, effective use of this tool still relies on the designers' ability to create content that will effectively promote learning. Spicynodes : Home - 0 views

SpicyNodes is a website that allows users to create node-maps (similar to mind maps) through an interactive, multimedia platform. Creating a node-map requires users to engage in highly complex cognitive tasks as users must create a hierarchal order for the information they want to present. As a teaching tool, each node can be designed to include both pictures or videos and text to highlight content, consistent with Mayer's (2009) dual channel processing principle. Designed effectively, a node-map can be an effective learner-centered approach for presenting information as the concise format of a node naturally aligns with the "limited capacity" of working memory (Id.). As a learning tool, learners can use node-maps to organize their thinking and developing understanding of complex subjects. Creating a node-map requires the user to carefully consider the relationship and interconnectedness of information and to organize that information in a meaningful manner. Reference: Mayer, R. (2009). Multimedia learning (2nd Ed.). New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.

Enchanted Learning - 1 views

Enchanted Learning is an online curriculum warehouse. With over 25,000 links to different Web pages, this site can also be a great guide in exploring all your educational design needs. Enchanted Learning also contains a wide array of graphic organizers to incorporate into a multimedia presentation. The site is a little busy in its design, but I think the amount of useful material that is connected to this site is well worth the visit

This website is the training search site for eInstruction Interwrite tablet and CPS tools and software. It includes tutorials on various elements involved in using the tools along with video demonstrations, state standards implementation, assessment, and collaboration links to help educators effectively implement the technology in the classroom. Mayer (2009) categorizes multimedia design into two approaches- a technology-centered approach and a learner-centered approach. I believe this artifact could fall under both approaches to some degree. The technology-centered approach of this artifact is the "cutting-edge advances in multimedia technology." (Mayer, 2009 p. 10) The Interwrite tablet (Mobi) and CPS are the cutting-edge technologies that can provide the latest technology for teachers to use in the classroom. However, I feel, the site provides a stronger learner-centered approach with its design as the goal of the site is to aid human cognition and enhance human performance. (Mayer, 2009 p. 13)
