Where, perhaps, when considering how to best set up learning spaces for our students, we once thought it was a choice between a regular whiteboard and an interactive whiteboard, we now have a full array of options to choose from.

In our senior school, on the other hand, what a lesson looks like has been more radically shifting. Recently we have been able to flood our senior school with MacBooks and iPads.

Students have access to the tools and devices that can empower them to discover things for themselves. They can take charge of their learning, and personalise it in a way that never before has been possible.

Audacious. Egregious. Crazy. These are just some of the adjectives I used in my conversation with Amber.  She actually asked me how I wanted to move forward, putting the onus of a solution back on me. I understand why, too: she’s just as powerless as I am. I would love for Apple to face public backlash and financial ramifications for having taken advantage of its customers in such a brazen and unethical way, but Apple seems beyond reproach at this point. It took three representatives before I could even speak to someone who comprehended what I was saying, and even when she admitted to Apple’s shady practice, she was able to offer no solution besides “don’t use the product.” When our data is finally a full-blown utility, however, “just don’t use the product” will cease to be an option. Apple will be in control, bringing their 1984 commercial full circle into a tragic, oppressive irony.

The findings showed that college students are not always turning to the most relevant clues to determine the veracity of online content. Indeed, students appear to lack “Web savvy” when it comes to determining credibility and using search engines. According to study results, students favor the rankings of search engines and the top result rather than other factors, such as the author’s credentials

According to predictions of 1,021 experts ranging from tech CEOs, professors, and principal researchers, hyper-connected young people will be nimble multitaskers by 2020; however, they will also likely thirst for instant gratification and may value the immediacy of their information over the credibility of their findings.

Learning is not just about the content of a lesson. It is about belonging to a community.

"If you're always moving away from something, you'll be lost," Mr. Siemens remembers a priest telling him. "Always be moving toward something."

"For me, we can't even talk like that," Mr. Cormier tells me. "It's messy, and it's always going to be messy, and those sort of clean lines are not even something we should strive for."
