For The Win » Blog Archive » Why gamification would rip open the classroom - 3 views

  •
There is something in games based learning that seems to get missed out of much of the discussion. While it's common to think of using game-like approaches or video-games I find much of what is said revolves about how games work in terms of mechanics. Level ups, XP (experience) and badges seem to dominate the gamification dialogue. I wonder how you can gamify the workplace or the classroom without also exploring the more important aspects of why people play - how it feels to be immersed in a story that you feel a part of. Players are given badges and tokens all the time, except these don't provide that intrinsic motivation that people often associate with gamification. For the love of it. How do you get people to play for that reward?

"It decided so few students were now borrowing books that it would prefer to ditch the whole collection than bother with its upkeep. Good get for the charity, but I think the students have been ripped off."

Comics using comic life and drawplus - Resources - TES - 5 views

  •
Great little video tutorials that show how to construct comics in comic life but also working with drawplus to rip characters from one cartoon and embedding them in the other. All neatly wrapped up in a cyber bullying theme for a token nod to e-safety.

We publish an insanely great newsletter on photography. More specifically, we scour the internets, rip pages out of magazines, ransack our friends' closets, and go through dumpsters to find the very best Photo tips, DIY projects, and Gear.

RIP Flip Video Camera - 7 views

  • It looks like the Flip was simply an intermediary product. Much like the netbook, which has been largely usurped by lower-cost full laptops and tablets like the iPad, the Flip was simply a product that disrupted markets before moving aside for a true successor.
  •
The popular Flip video camera is no more, with Cisco announcing Tuesday it "will exit aspects of its consumer businesses," which includes shutting down the Flip.
  •
Interesting to consider that the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad2 with built in cameras might have also nudged the Flipvideo camera aside.

RIP Google Reader - 0 views

  •
"Google Reader, one of the world's most popular RSS readers, is shutting down on July 1, 2013, Google announced Wednesday. The search giant is pulling the plug on the 7-year old project citing "declining usage." Google says it is shuttering Reader and deprecating or shutting down a number of other services as part of the company's "spring cleaning" initiative - one that seeks to help the company focus on the features that need the most use."

RIP: Every Product Ever Axed By Google [INFOGRAPHIC] - 3 views

  •
On Monday, Google will pull the plug on Google Reader, despite much general online despair about the death of the most popular RSS reader. So if you were ever a fan of Google Wave, Google Labs or maybe even Google Buzz, you're probably a little nostalgic for the services of Google's past. If you want to take the trip down memory lane, check out the infographic below, courtesy of Wordstream.

Why QR Codes Won't Last - 1 views

  •
"Like most technology fans, I am always ready and willing to try any technology that promises to simplify my life. QR codes seemed to present an accessible and uniform way for people with smart devices to interact with advertising, marketing and media. Those little squares of code seemed to open a world of opportunity and potential. But after using them for a length of time, I shifted my perspective."
