"Dual-screen apps are a new phenomena, enabled by the advent of wireless technologies that allow for effortless pairing of a PC, tablet or smartphone with a TV. They are changing how people are interacting and "consuming" content within apps. For developers this creates many new opportunities to provide better experiences for their users, but it requires thinking about dual-screen setups from the start as well as new tools. The opportunity for dual-screen apps is huge. And it's more than just watching a video or playing a game: Dual-screen apps have the potential to transform the office meeting room, the classroom, the retail store, the hospital, and really any other context where people are interacting around content and information and where that information would benefit from rendering and display on a large screen such as a TV monitor."

"THE federal government's scheme providing high school students with laptop computers is on the brink of collapse, leaving parents with hefty bills and educators with a chaotic start to the school year. Schools are already telling parents they must lease approved laptops for pupils this year, at a cost of hundreds of dollars. Some are telling students to bring their own computers, raising a raft of problems around internet capacity, security and provision of software, as well as placing pressure on low-income families."

Our new site, now accepting student content. StudentCreated.TV is a free, educational "kids teaching kids" project featuring Student-Created Tutorials for all school subjects. Mr. Marcos & his Students (of Mathtrain.TV) at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA as well as students from around the globe are invited to contribute. Site works on mobile devices, such as iPads and iPhones.

"A conversation between four of the early pioneers describing how they brought the Internet to the UK.  This was filmed on 1st July at Google, as part of an event celebrating the UK's computing heritage. Speakers include Roger Scantlebury and Peter Wilkinson, who worked at the National Physical Laboratory and helped develop the NPL network, the first internet like thing in the UK. They were joined by Peter Kirstein, then from UCL and Vint Cerf, at that time at UCLA/Stanford/DARPA. As well as describing what they did, context is given to the NPL's role and to the political and bureaucratic challenges at the time."

As the post-PC era moves from interesting theory to cold, hard reality, one of the most pressing questions is: How can we use tablets, and especially the iPad, to help people learn? Most of the focus has been on ebooks replacing textbooks, a trend fueled by Apple's recent updates to iBooks. Specifically, the company released iBooks Author, a tool for creating immersive ebooks on the desktop. Plus, the new iPad is now the first tablet with a retina screen, making reading and watching multimedia on the device even more enjoyable. But technology is only as good as the system it's applied to. Much like a fresh coat of paint will not improve the fuel efficiency of a '69 Mustang, the application of technology to a broken system masks deeper problems with short-term gains.

Finding creative solutions to energy issues has become a major priority for Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page in recent years. For the obvious reasons -- a growing population, increasingly scarce resources, and climate change -- he believes that the corporate world needs to operate more sustainably, and he is determined to build the nation's first zero-carbon company. This means a business that ultimately is so energy efficient and uses so much clean power that it emits no greenhouse gas -- a very tall order indeed. Experts aren't sure whether it's even possible for a company to emit no carbon, but Google is trying to come as close to that goal as possible. "As we became a bigger user of energy, we wanted to make sure we were not just part of the problem, but part of the solution," says Urs Hölzle, Google's employee No. 8 and a senior vice president who oversees the company's green initiatives.

"This leaves us with the question of how to inspire students to look through Internet search results with tenacity, to approach new technologies that may require more problem-solving skills, and to address tasks that are not as instantaneously gratifying as playing video games. It is our role as teachers to help students develop the skills to problem solve independently and collaboratively use 21st-century skills while not relying on technology to do all of the thinking for them."

Rubrics are almost always a work in progress and most have strengths and weaknesses. As a result, on this wiki, a rubric may be used to demonstrate a non-example of a trait of quality rubrics but could be a quality example for a different attribute. Conversely, some of the quality examples may be lacking in other areas. We are using the rubrics to explore how to attend to details so we can ensure that any one rubric is as clear, explicit, and effective as possible.

Gooru is a new service (still carrying the Alpha label) that aims to provide teachers and students with an extensive collection of videos, interactive displays, documents, diagrams, and quizzes for learning about topics in math and science. As a Gooru member you have access to hundreds of resources according to subject areas such as chemistry, biology, ecology, algebra, calculus, and more. Within each subject area you can look for resources according to media type such as video, interactive display, slides, text, and lesson plans. When you find resources that you want to use, drag them to the resources folder within your account. Gooru also offers you the option to add resources to your folders even if you did not find them within Gooru.

Unhangout is an open source platform for running large scale online un-conferences. We use Google Hangouts to create as many small sessions as needed, and help users find others with shared interests. Think of it as a classroom with an infinite number of breakout sessions. Each event has a landing page, which we call the lobby. When participants arrive, they can see who else is there and chat with each other. The hosts can do a video welcome and introduction that gets streamed into the lobby. Participants then break out into smaller sessions (up to 10 people per session) for in-depth conversations, peer-to-peer learning, and collaboration on projects. UnHangouts are community-based learning instead of top-down information transfer.

Some good advice about using Dropbox as a personal tool as well as for teaching purposes.

This online tool is like a free Photoshop. it is also less complicated to use and so good for younger users. It has intuitive editing control panels that allow the user to do simple things such as using filters, creating effects, cropping and resizing photos. It is also very easy easy to undo anything that does not turn out as well as expected. If  a project requires a more sophisticated treatment, it also has layers that, like Photoshop, allow a user to create very professional final products. It is also easy to upload projects to Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. 

"I want the people who will help shape our society in the future to understand the technology that will help shape out society in the future. If this is going to happen, then we need to reverse the trend that is seeing digital illiteracy exponentially increase. We need to act together, as parents, as teachers, as policy makers.
