Gazelle, the online consumer electronics "reCommerce" service, reported it has partnered with Costco to set up the wholesale club's electronics trade-in and recycle program. The Gazelle Electronics Trade-In and Recycle Program involves three simple steps: 1.Visit costco.gazelle.com to determine the value of the electronic device; 2.Ship the item(s) to Gazelle for free; and 3.Receive a Costco Cash Card for the value of the item(s). The program will accept consumer electronics in a growing number of nearly 20 categories including digital cameras, laptops, MP3 players, cell phones and more.

While electronics waste or e-waste recycling partnerships are providing significant environmental benefits by keeping waste out of landfills, they are also giving manufacturers and retailers an environmental marketing edge by providing their customers with a needed service, together with financial incentives, whether its through gift cards or charitable donations. Environmental groups and some electronics recyclers are opposed to a federal electronic scrap bill that would allow recyclers to export units to developing countries for repair or refurbishing. Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, introduced House Resolution 2595 in U.S. House of Representatives. The measure is aimed at prohibiting exports of certain types of electronic scrap. Starting Sept. 5, the city is launching an electronics recycling program that will part of a statewide effort to keep electronics out of landfills. The city will set up mobile WIRED, or Westminster Initiative to Recycle E-Waste Drop-off, centers around the community over the next several months. The Sept. 5 debut location will be at Tahoma Farm Boulder Park, off Tahoma Farm Road. Future locations will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Consumer Electronics Show is the greenest it has ever been so far, writes Maura Judkis of Fresh Greens. Highlights from the show: Toshiba unveiled the Super Charge Battery, which is touted as a longer-lasting battery with a target recharge time of 90 percent in just 10 minutes. The company also said it has teamed up with Sharp and Panasonic to create the Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Company , which will set up 280 recycling points across all 50 states. As a result, we have the most comprehensive, quality controlled database on electronics recycling organizations available. In the midst of a show dedicated to birthing new technology and gadgets, there was some serious thought Tuesday about where consumer electronics go when they die. Lewis County residents with old computers and TVs will be able to recycle them for free beginning in January, when a new "e-cycle" law goes into effect. A press release from the county said computer towers, laptops, computer monitors and televisions are eligible for the program. A collection center will be set up at the Centralia Goodwill store, at 519 Harrison Ave. Those interested can call the store at 736-3828 for collection center operating hours. Under the Washington Electronics Recycling Law, manufacturers will pay for the program, and it is open to all state residents, schools, small businesses, small governments, special-purpose districts and nonprofit groups

The WMMFA is the manufacturer board-directed authority created by state law to handle the recycling of certain electronics in the state of Washington. Our job is to follow state law and guidelines as set forth by the department of Ecology to create a standard plan that manufacturers will participate in and finance. We coordinate collectors, transporters and processors to recycle covered electronics, then bill participating member manufacturers for the costs. Starting January 1st, 2009 covered electronics: TVs, Computer Monitors, Laptops and Computer towers will be recycled. Established in 2002, ERI is an Electronic Waste collector and recycler, specializing in the environmentally safe and socially responsible dismantling of electronic items such as computers, televisions, monitors, cell phones, and other unwanted or obsolete electronic items. ERI is largely recognized as the leading recycler of electronics in the state of California and one of the largest in North America. Shegerian, like ERI, is based in Fresno, California.

Public Act 95-0959 became the law of the State of Illinois in September 2008. The law establishes a statewide system for recycling and/or reusing computers, monitors, televisions, and printers discarded from residences by requiring electronic manufacturers and retailers to participate in the management of discarded and unwanted electronic products.
