January 8, 2009 (IDG News Service) New consumer-electronics products are a little greener than those on sale a year ago -- but manufacturers could do much better, according to a study by environmental campaign group Greenpeace International . The report, "Green Electronics: The Search Continues" (download PDF) , evaluated 50 products that 15 companies identified as their most environmentally friendly models, but it found that none of them performed well against all criteria. Greenpeace will hold a news conference at the International CES in Las Vegas on Friday to discuss the report's details

Indiana law signed 5/13/09. Manufacturers of video display devices, such as TVs, computer monitors and laptops, must recycle 60 percent by weight of their sales of those products. They are required to register with the state by April 2010 and must include a plan describing how they will meet their recycling targets. They can count the recycling of other electronics, such as printers, keyboards and VCRs, toward their recycling goals. Manufacturers must report their progress at the end of each program year for state review. In the third year, the state will impose penalties for noncompliance.

Donating E-Cycle material to Goodwill helps in two ways: supporting Goodwill's job-training and placement efforts; and through sales at our retail stores, having a greater chance to reuse computers instead of having them end up in the waste stream. Donations to Goodwill are, of course, tax-deductible and Goodwill also will accept peripherals, keyboards, cel phones and other electronic equipment.

Even though holiday sales were down at least 2% from 2007, millions of Americans awoke Christmas morning to new computers, TVs and iPhones. (I didn't, but thanks for the pens, Mom.)
