Pupils navigate their way around the two woods and use a camera to take photos of items of interest. Once they have taken each photograph a real image appears, together with more information about what they have seen. Once both woods have been visited, multiple choice questions test recall and understanding.
The activity works well in an ICT suite for individual exploration and discovery or it can be used as a shared pupil experience using an interactive whiteboard - particularly helpful if the class includes non-readers. It is a great introduction to a real woodland visit.

You walk into a restaurant with a large group of friends. To accommodate you, the restaurant will push a bunch of tables together-but how many tables will be needed to ensure that everyone has a seat? This applet will let you explore that question. Has two modes: Exploration and Guess. Great to present whole class and then allow for individual group use.

Exploring the Secret Life of Trees is designed to help 3rd - 5th grade students gain an appreciation of trees, observe trees in their everyday lives, and develop an interest in discovering more about trees. It is intended for adults to work with children to explore the secret life of trees. THE LINK to the student version is at the bottom of the page, "Return to the Secret Life of Trees". The student version is animated and narrated and can be used with DI/UDL.
