ARRA/Economic Stimulus Plan for Education

The goal of this site is to provide information and access to events, information, and discussion areas relating to the educational portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), with the specific goal of helping to facilitate a dialog that will promote the best long-term uses of the funds.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides significant new funding for programs under Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA). Specifically, the ARRA provides $10 billion in additional Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 Title I, Part A funds to local education agencies (LEAs) for schools that have high concentrations of students from families that live in poverty in order to help improve teaching and learning for students most at risk of failing to meet state academic achievement standards.

As school leaders prepare to spend billions of dollars in federal stimulus money, the American Library Association (ALA) is lobbying to have some of those dollars used to keep school libraries up to date during hard economic times.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act contains several pots of money slated for educational technology. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that nearly $4 billion is now available for California under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. This funding will lay the foundation for a generation of education reform and help save hundreds of thousands of teaching jobs at risk of state and local budget cuts. California will be eligible to apply for another $2 billion this fall. California is the first state to be approved for the first round of state stabilization funding.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) appropriated $100 million in new funding for Impact Aid under section 8007 of Title VIII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended (ESEA).

The majority of this fund is for competitive grants which can only be awarded directly to a State if the State applies as an eligible entity and meets the eligibility requirements. The Program requires at least one grant be awarded in each state.

In addition to the new programs established through ARRA, the U.S. Dept of Education will be temporarily increasing funding for a wide array of existing programs including progra,s authorized under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
