A federal court ruled Monday that the methane rule adopted under the Obama administration must be upheld by the current administration. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that the Trump administration had no right to delay the rule that limits methane emissions from gas and oil operations.

The Environmental Protection Agency's rule to limit greenhouse gas emissions by power plants has been overturned by the Supreme Court. The Environmental Protection Agency published its final Clean Power Plan rule on Monday. Under the rule, the U.S. will be required to reduce its carbon emission 32% below 2005 levels by 2030. The solar and wind industries have praised the rule. "American wind power can do this. Low-cost wind energy reduced carbon emissions by 5% in 2014, and we're capable of doing a lot more," said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan. 

On Friday, a group of children suing the government for inaction on climate change scored a major victory, as a judge ruled that the Washington State Department of Ecology must deliver an emissions reduction rule by the end of this year. That decision follows another major win in mid-April, when an Oregon judge ruled that a similar lawsuit could go forward despite opposition from the fossil fuel industry.

The EPA today released final standards for new and modified municipal solid waste landfills and emission guidelines for existing landfills. California is pushing to make computers and monitors more energy-efficient, with the California Energy Commission proposing minimum power-consumption standards that could save 2,702 gigawatt hours of electricity per year. It's estimated that the rules would save consumers $430 million a year in energy costs.

More than 70 different technologies are available to improve the efficiency of a trucking fleet. In a delay for the EPA's Clean Power Plan, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit yesterday said the full court will hear oral arguments on the carbon emissions rule on Sept. 27. A three-judge panel had been scheduled to hear the case on June 2.
