Number Talks for Number Sense - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
"Number Talks" is an approach to the teaching and learning of Number Sense. Rather than relying on the rote-memorisation of isolated number facts achieved through drills of "table-facts", Number Talks aim to build confident, number fluency, where learners recognise patterns within and between numbers and understand the properties of numbers and operations. Number Talks are a "mind on" learning task that engages students in an active learning process as they search for patterns, decompose and recompose numbers and develop a flexible understanding.

Linear potentiometers measure distance position with an analog output. Spectra Symbol's membrane potentiometer sensors not only give linear position sensing, but do so in a world-class 0.5mm in height, creating a form factor that allows OEM's to insert feedback position sensing right next to the device as it moves.

Low crude prices good for India and indian stock market - 0 views

  •
According to Richard Gibbs of Macquarie Securities reduced crude prices goes in favour of the Indian economy and gives RBI a scope for monetary accommodation Richard Gibbs Global HD, Macquarie More about the Expert Richard Gibbs, Global Head of Macquarie Securities is upbeat on India because he thinks there is room for structural expansion and the demand is much better than anywhere else in the world. According to him reduced crude prices goes in favour of the Indian economy and gives RBI a scope for monetary accommodation. It is also likely to produce some tailwind for the global economy. "It certainly provides latitude on the trade side but also in terms of the inflation side for the economy as well." The house remains a buyer on India. What is the sense you are getting. Are we now facing a fairly big challenge to global growth and therefore are risk assets going to head lower? A: I think the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is articulating that fairly well as we move into the IMF World Bank annual meeting in the next few days. It really is a case where the US is I suppose the best if you see IMF's parlance and that's for investors who have been searching for growth is a disappointment. So, now I suspect we are going to have people turning back towards in search for yield and that has become difficult as well with the expansion in quantitative easing measures around the world but most particularly by the European Central Bank of course. At the end of the day lower crude prices are probably growth positive and the issue there is whether they pertaining further disinflationary pressure/deflationary pressure in the major economies. Certainly for an economy like India, cooling in crude prices is a positive. It certainly provides latitude on the trade side but also in terms of the inflation side for the economy as well. It's a bit of a two-edged sword as I suppose in that sense but overall lower crude prices are likely to produce some tailwind for the global eco

Telling a new story of learning and school - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
One of the key ways by which we make sense of our world is by analysing the stories that we and others use to describe it. These stories are a construct of our experiences, our beliefs, our cultural perspectives and the interactions between these things. Even when the context in which the story is set is the same, the details and nature of the story that particular individuals or collective share can differ vastly. Only by listening to each story with empathy and genuine desire to understand each individual's telling of this story do we develop true insights. Making sense of the stories of education should be a key process for all educators.

Organisational Learning - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
For schools the concept of a learning organisation should make perfect sense, after all learning is our core business, or it should be. Perhaps that almost three decades after Peter Senge identified the importance of learning within organisations the idea is only now gaining traction in schools tells us something about the approach taken to learning and teaching within schools. With an increased focus on the development of professional learning communities as a response to the complex challenges that emerge from a rapidly changing society, it is worth looking at what a learning organisation requires for success.

Diigo Blog » Diigo Lists vs. Google Notebook - 0 views

  •
    1. Google Notebook is very much similar to Diigo Lists. In Diigo Lists, you can organize, share and display specific collections of bookmarks. Once you add bookmarks to your list, you can easily re-arrange the collections by drag-and-drop, and add "section". And you can publish a Diigo list as an HTML document. 2. In Diigo, an item in a list is also saved separately as a bookmark (which can be tagged). So in this sense, Diigo integrates both Google Notebook and Google Bookmark. 3. Diigo also has the important advantage that "clippings" are really "highlights" on the original web pages and will be shown as such when you re-visit the web pages, reminding you the exact context of the clippings. 4. Another unique Diigo list feature: once you create a list, click the " WebSlides" button, you can browse, play and annotate any list of URLs as a slide show! It's great for content browsing, sharing, and creating unique presentations based on web content. Here is an example of a Diigo List, consisting of recent reviews of Diigo, and watch the Diigo List / WebSlides in action! 5. Google Notebook is a bit more flexible in that an item does not have to be tied to a webpage. Diigo Lists will soon be upgraded to provide this flexibility and a lot more in the near future.

myVRSpot - 8 views

  •
MyVRSpot is the most innovative way to connect true Web 2.0 with curriculum content, combining elements similar to the online publishing of YouTube and the personal space of Facebook.  MyVRSpot provides students with a hosted web space (webspot) to upload their videos, audio files, and pictures, all while exploring in the District's "safe backyard."  All media is controlled and monitored before going online for others to view.  This allows for students to still become those "push button" publishers without the district having to worry about inappropriate content within a multimedia sharing environment.  With MyVRSpot, students become researchers, developers, and producers of their own webspot, giving them the sense of ownership.

Creative Educator - Digital Storytelling Across the Curriculum - 1 views

  •
In an age of mathematical, logical, and scientific thinking, storytelling is often considered appropriate only for language arts projects for young learners. However, in today's information-loaded world, storytelling is being rediscovered as an effective tool for helping us make sense of this data barrage.

Local Wisdom versus Global Assessments - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
A significant shift continues to occur within global education markets. It is signified by the manner in which it makes sense to speak of a global education market. It is driven by neo-liberalism and the expansion of markets into all aspects of our lives and it is made possible by manipulation of the third messaging system within the educational triad of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. It is a drive towards accountable, comparable and productive education systems fine-tuned to maximise the return on investment and provide industry with the workforce it desires. What must be asked is how does this trend impact students and are these the forces that should be driving change in our education systems?

Four perspectives on truth, normality and education in times of rapid change - The Lear... - 0 views

  •
We are living in interesting, frightening and rapidly changing times. Where rapid changes and transformations through technology, politics, globalisation and the climate, conspire against normality. These times demand a fresh approach to education, one that provides learners with the thinking dispositions they need to turn challenges into opportunities.  "All that was 'normal' has now evaporated; we have entered postnormal times, the in-between period where old orthodoxies are dying, new ones have not yet emerged, and nothing really makes sense." But what thinking might guide us through this time of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity?

Insights into the true power of Number Talks - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Number Talks are a wonderful way to see where our students are with their mathematical thinking. As a part of a daily routine, a Number Talk promotes number sense and mathematical reasoning. In this post, I revisit what a Number Talk can reveal about our students' understanding of mathematics, and how they might be used to promote a fresh perspective. In addition, I examine a success criteria for Number Talks that is more expansive and recognises their true power.
