Google Says Many Manual Actions Are Algorithmic Now - 0 views

  • John Mueller: A lot of these manual actions have evolved over time. Where we would say well we need to do this manually and at some point we figure out how to do it algorithmically. And it kind of evolved into that direction.
  • Because the web is just gigantic and we can't manually review the whole web. We have to find ways to do as much as possible algorithmically. And in many cases there's still weird things out there that we don't catch algorithmically that maybe we do have to take manual action on.

Why SEOs should care about brand - 0 views

  • if brand interest goes up organic will probably get credit for more conversions, and we will look good. If it goes down we will look bad. If we’re not paying attention, if we’re not involved in brand activity, these changes will be out of our control and we’ll be blind to the causes.
  • There are also some stories filtering through the SEO industry, by way of pub chats, DMs and private groups, of people influencing rankings by driving up specific branded searches. The theory could be summed up with this example;Google already knows lego.com is a good result for the search “Lego toys”Google’s algorithms start to relate the concept “Lego” closely to the concept “toys”Because the concepts are closely related Google starts to believe that lego.com is also a good result for the broader “toys” search.
  • We have a couple of ways to track overall brand performance, you can use these to help benchmark efforts over time.Direct traffic to the homepage

  • SERP ownership trackers: are increasingly common. For instance Visably (I have no affiliation but do have a free account, which you could get too) and SERP Sketch (I’ve heard of it but not used it). Rather than just telling you if you’re ranking for a specific keyword, they’ll show you if any of the pages in the top ten results mention your brand. That’s the kind of information you can use to select outreach targets.

Patrick Stox en Twitter: "Uncommon SEO Knowledge #1 HTTPS - 0 views

  • HTTPS is required for many modern web technologies. HTTP/2 (H2), HTTP/3 (H3), Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), service workers, geolocation, push notifications and more require HTTPS by default.
  • There are many types of certificates. The most common is Domain Validated (DV) which you can typically get for free from your web host, CDN, or issuers like https://letsencrypt.org. Organization Validated (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) may be seen as more trustworthy.
  • One certificate for a domain is a lot easier to maintain if you have a need for different subdomains.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • You should setup monitoring on old domains with something like @contentking alerts. If your cert expires, users will receive a warning on your old pages and not be redirected to the new site.
  • You can still change the Referrer Policy for your site, but this mostly benefits other websites. You are still losing much of the referring page data to your own website. To see who is driving you traffic, you'll have to get data from a backlink index like @ahrefs.

How to Stay Safe on Public Wi-Fi | WIRED - 0 views

  • wherever possible stick to well-known networks, like Starbucks. These Wi-Fi networks are likely less suspect because the people and companies operating them are already getting money out of you.
  • No public Wi-Fi network is absolutely secure—that depends as much on who's on it with you as who provides it—but in terms of relative safety, known quantities generally beat out that random public Wi-Fi network that pops up on your phone in a shopping mall, or a network operated by a third party that you've never heard of.
  • By far the most effective trick for staying safe on public Wi-Fi is to install a VPN

wifi - Should an IT Security Policy allow employees use public Wi-Fi? - Information Sec... - 0 views

  • Given the negligible cost of local SIM cards compared to the expense of business travel, it's best to use them in favor of public wi-fi, together with other security measures (encrypted mail, encrypted files, low privileges, compartmentalization, monitoring, VPN). Even secured wi-fi is still someone else's network, someone local that can be impersonated and that gets two-way access to your traffic.
  • Mitigating the threat posed by these security flaws is difficult, but if one must connect to public "hotspots," then the best approach is to utilize a VPN.
  •
"The best solution is, IMO, to ensure the laptops used for travel aren't holding sensitive information, and aren't plugged into the vulnerable parts of the intranet (assuming zero-trust is not in place). On top of that, ensure the personnel on travel follows at least a minimum of security practices, such as not using open networks and not mailing sensitive data without end-to-end encryption."

Google: We Rarely Show Sitelinks Search Box, Even When Markup is Used - 0 views

  • Site owners do not have to do anything to get a sitelinks search box to appear. However, there is structured data available for customizing how a sitelinks search box will appear when Google decides to show one.
  • Whether or not the structured data is used will not impact Google’s decision to show a sitelinks search box.In fact, Mueller says this feature is “rarely” shown in search results.
  • So it’s very rare, or it feels very rare, that we would show a sitelink search box in general – for queries, for sites. And only for those cases where we would show it, if you have the markup we’ll try to use the markup, if you don’t have it we’ll just use the default setup. So that’s something where, if you’re currently not seeing a sitelink searchbox at all, then adding the markup for that will have no effect.”

Google Says Negative Review Web Sites Don't Hurt Your Sites Search Ranking - 0 views

"I think, at most, what might happen is that people stumble across that in the search results for your company name. They're like, oh, what does this mean, and then they get lost in that website. But it's not that the existence of such a page would negatively affect your site."
