Ageing consumers and their technology perceptions  

In future ageing consumers will form the largest customer segment which is very heterogeneous. They will be very potential customer also for technological products. This paper examines reasons and barriers for technology perceptions and  usage among ageing Finnish customers.     

The common belief that older people fear or are indifferent towards technology does not fully explain this low usage.

First, the population of older people is increasing at an extraordinary rate.

Assistive Technologies (ATs) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) may improve quality of life, extend length of community residence, improve physical and mental health status, delay the onset of serious health problems and reduce family and care-giver burden.

While the ageing of the population around the world raises serious concerns about social security, pensions, long-term care, health care and family systems, digital-age tools have been proposed as possible resources to improve outcomes. Considerable literature has appeared suggesting that Assistive Technologies (ATs) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) may improve quality of life, extend length of community residence, improve physical and mental health status, delay the onset of serious health problems and reduce family and care-giver burden.

OLDER people often feel isolated from information communications technology

Worldwide every month, another 1.2 million people turn 60. Between 2000 and 2050 the percentage of the total population aged 60 or more will more than double – from 10% to 22%.

But is Microsoft’s approach more than simply teaching the elderly computer basics and mobile phone gadgetry?

SUNY Oswego offers a number of online e-learning courses using the SkillPort software.  There are over 1500 courses available ranging from information technology and business courses to human resources, marketing, communication, customer service, and project management courses.

It also affects people whose skills have not kept pace with technological advances, and it affects people with disabilities, age-related impairments, or other difficulties that may interfere with their ability to use technology. In communities around the world, opportunities are being lost and high-wage jobs are going unfilled because people lack either access to ICT or the skills to use it.

Online video is renegotiating its (problematic) relationship with cinema. It deals with cinematographic principles versus the principles of the online age. We cannot directly transfer the cinematographic principles into the online age as new media has its own specificities. YouTube is not just video on the web but YouTube is a natively digital object. Ten years ago Lev Manovich proposed to consider the database as the (new) dominant media form. The database is the hegemonic media form online, as can be seen on YouTube, Flickr, MySpace and Google. We should think beyond technology now the database is also becoming a dominant social form. The database is shaping the social.

New social media behaviors Both hardware and software (and interfaces if we choose to put the interface between hardware and software instead of seeing it as software) direct new users to turn their media into social media. YouTube pushes you to interact by offering a wide abundance of “social options” such as Share/Post video/Add to groups etc. I recognize this trend in the use of my new mobile phone. Not only is it my first mobile phone with an integrated camera it also gives me the option to publish a picture on the web immediately. This has been made even easier by installing a piece of software called Shozu that immediately pops up a “Send to Flickr” dialog after I have taken a picture. This causes me to upload nearly every picture I take to Flickr. My mobile phone creates new social media behaviors.

Lessons about collaboration are extracted from the findings of two large, long-term digital library research projects. Both the Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype Project (ADEPT) and the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) project on data management leverage scientific research data for use in teaching. Two forms of collaboration were studied: (1) direct, in which faculty work together on research projects; and (2) indirect or serial, in which faculty use or contribute content to a common pool, such as teaching resources, concepts and relationships, or research data. Five aspects of collaboration in e-Research are discussed: (1) disciplinary factors, (2) incentives to adopt e-Learning and e-Research technologies, (3) user roles, (4) information sharing, and (5) technical requirements.

These days we are seeing more and more learning opportunities for seniors that seek to meet the challenge of including older people in the information and communication society

Quoting a 75 years old learner: “I liked being able to get to grips with this new (to me) technology in the privacy of my own home in my own time. Being able to work at my own pace - some things came quickly, others not so. Being able to contact our mentors and other course members from time to time and when necessary”.

E-learning is the use of the internet and new multimedia technologies to improve the quality of learning by providing access to resources and services, as well as remote exchanges and collaboration.

The Hashemite University established an e-learning center to develop e-learning infrastructure, training, course/curriculum development, and support practices.

In both these ways, it has the potential to promote longer working lives
