Simple Minds are a rock band from Scotland, who had their greatest worldwide popularity from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. The band, from the south side of Glasgow, produced a handful of critically acclaimed albums in the early 1980s, and later went on to produce some politically inspired and critically praised work. Simple Minds have secured a string of successful hit singles, the best known being its number one worldwide hit single "Don't You (Forget About Me)", from the soundtrack of the John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club. Founding members Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitar), along with drummer Mel Gaynor, are the core of the band, which currently features Andy Gillespie on keyboards and Eddie Duffy on bass guitar.

Whitesnake is an English hard rock band, founded in 1977 by David Coverdale (formerly of Deep Purple). The band's early material has been compared by critics to Deep Purple but by the mid eighties Whitesnake had moved away from the early blues-rock influenced heavy metal to a more commercial hard rock style.

The White Stripes is an American rock band, formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. The group consists of songwriter Jack White (vocals, guitar, and other assorted instruments) and Meg White (drums, percussion and occasional vocals). After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit independent music underground, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002, as part of the garage rock revival scene. Their successful albums White Blood Cells and Elephant drew them attention from a large variety of media outlets in the United States and the United Kingdom. The White Stripes use a low-fidelity, do-it-yourself approach to writing and recording, and utilize a simplified color scheme of red, white, and black for their imagery, instruments and clothing. Playing in the punk blues style, their music stresses a raw, minimalistic simplicity of composition and arrangement predominantly inspired by blues, early punk rock, and garage rock. The White Stripes' discography consists of six studio albums, two extended plays (EP), one video album, 26 singles and fourteen music videos. The band has sold approximately 12 million albums worldwide,[1][2] 2 million in the US alone,[3] and their latest three albums have each won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.[4]

The Doors were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, California by vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, drummer John Densmore, and guitarist Robby Krieger. They were considered a controversial band, due mostly to Morrison's cryptic lyrics and unpredictable stage persona. After Morrison's death on July 3, 1971, the remaining members continued as a threesome until disbanding in 1973.[1] Despite a career that barely totaled eight years, The Doors still enjoy a huge cult following as well as status in the mainstream music industry as being hugely influential and original. According to the RIAA, they have sold over 32 million albums in the US alone.[2]

James Marshall Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is widely considered to be the greatest guitarist in the history of rock music by other musicians and commentators in the industry,[1][2] [3]and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era across a range of genres.[4][5][6]After initial success in Europe, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

Aerosmith is an American hard rock band, sometimes referred to as "The Bad Boys from Boston"[2] and "America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band".[3][4][5][6] Their style, rooted in blues-based hard rock,[1][7] has come to also incorporate elements of pop,[8] heavy metal,[1] glam,[9] and rhythm and blues,[10] which has inspired many subsequent rock artists.[11] The band was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970. Guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton, originally in a band together called the Jam Band, met up with singer Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano, and formed Aerosmith. By 1971, Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford, and the band began developing a following in Boston.

AC/DC are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Although the band are commonly classified as hard rock, and considered pioneers of heavy metal,[1][2] they have always classified their music as "rock and roll".[3] AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. Membership remained stable until bassist Mark Evans was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977. In 1979, the band recorded their highly successful album Highway to Hell. Lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on 19 February 1980, after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. The group briefly considered disbanding, but soon ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson was selected as Scott's replacement. Later that year, the band released their best-selling album, Back in Black.

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in 1962 in London when multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart were joined by vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early lineup. Stewart, deemed unsuitable as a teen idol, was removed from the official lineup in 1963 but continued to work with the band as road manager and keyboardist until his death in 1985.

Pink Floyd are an English rock band who initially earned recognition for their psychedelic and space rock music, and later, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. Pink Floyd are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative album cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music's most successful acts, the group have sold over 210 million albums worldwide[1][2][3] including 74.5 million albums in the United States.[4] Pink Floyd influenced progressive rock artists of the 1970s such as Genesis and Yes,[5] as well as contemporary artists such as Nine Inch Nails,[6] and Dream Theater.[7]

With a career spanning 25 extraordinary years, INXS are undoubtedly one of the world's great bands. With more than 30 million records sold worldwide, countless awards from their peers and fans, platinum certifications, and a history peppered with outstanding achievements, the band are arguably Australia's most successful rock export.

Lessons about collaboration are extracted from the findings of two large, long-term digital library research projects. Both the Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype Project (ADEPT) and the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) project on data management leverage scientific research data for use in teaching. Two forms of collaboration were studied: (1) direct, in which faculty work together on research projects; and (2) indirect or serial, in which faculty use or contribute content to a common pool, such as teaching resources, concepts and relationships, or research data. Five aspects of collaboration in e-Research are discussed: (1) disciplinary factors, (2) incentives to adopt e-Learning and e-Research technologies, (3) user roles, (4) information sharing, and (5) technical requirements.

E-learning at UCL - a summary Definition of E-learning A working definition adapted from the JISC is: ‘Learning facilitated and supported through the use of information and communications technology (ICT)’. E-learning includes: delivery of courses; on-line assessment; student to student and student to teacher communications; use of Internet resources; and other learning activities involving ICT and the Internet. It can thus be thought of as a continuum, encompassing a broad range of activities across a spectrum from using e-learning for “smarter” learner support, through blended learning (the majority of activity) to learning that is delivered entirely online.

E-Learning   Chronos   The e-learning tutorial Chronos deals with the business case for sustainable development. It is intended as a straightforward introduction for employees that can help organisations move sustainable development thinking into the mainstream.   Companies know that if sustainability is to be embedded in their organisations, their staff will need training. E-learning provides a practical and cost-effective alternative to a conventional training course.   There are now more than 200 organisations through the world using Chronos, with a total of around 150,000 user licences. Some, including Shell, Rio Tinto, and Philips, have customised Chronos to their own requirements, which can include corporate branding as well as video messages from their own executives. The software has been translated into Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and standard Portuguese.   Chronos was developed in partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. It is available via the Internet and on CD-ROM.

Business eLearning The Business e-Learning Research Group is active in e-learning in a business context (both in HE and in the workplace). We work to promote research into appropriate strategies for e-learning in business, to share and develop research and best practice, and contribute to international conferences, publications and funding bids. Within Brighton Business School we conduct research and innovate into appropriate pedagogies for use online learning, and seek to disseminate our ideas through practitioner workshops and support for colleagues.
