As part of a program to quell the violence, 37 armed police bases have been established in favelas since 2008 in the run-up to the soccer World Cup this summer and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Some favelas have also been cleared to make way for works related to the events.

I know it's quite a busy time for us all. I'd like to kindly ask if you have any used cell phones, iPods or iTouches that you no longer have use for. I'll be collecting them by the end of finals week and I could really use them for my research this summer in Brazil.
Here's a glimpse at what I'll be doing:
This research project will explore how music can be a medium and voice of empowerment for marginalized young women. My overarching goal will be to examine how notions of collective identity, belonging, and self-esteem are influential.
Visual Representation will serve as the primary method used to document and analyze the oral histories of young women. Data compiled from these visual documents will be used to summarize and present my findings in a short video documentary. Cell phones will be given to participants to shoot personal video footage in conjunction with my own.
If you do have one you could spare, please bring them to our last class tomorrow.
Thank you in advance for your help with my project!
Sincerely,
Shannon
