The work of this program is to engage students in innovative learning experiences and portray STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields as viable areas for all students to explore as part of their world and community. The work is a continuation of Leading Project Based (original work) Learning as STEM and Universal Design for Learning are incorporated.

Project Idea: Students work collaborative (in groups of 4) to develop an interactive multimedia Escape to Freedom Game based on the exploits of one of the most famous conductors on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Ross Tubman. This PBL project reminds me of a simulation that my students love, The Underground Railroad: Journey to Freedom.

I am adapting this fabulous PBL project for my classroom. It is great for teaching geography. I plan to include history content too.

This PBL requires students to use persuasive techniques to create an advertisement of a product they have created. It could be modified to include an analysis of how advertisements affect our choices.

Great cross-curricular creative activity

The project revolves around the energy produced in various types of chemical reactions (a key concept in all chemistry classes) and asks students to propose a useful source of chemical energy after engaging in a series of hands-on experiments and online activities. I appreciate how this project not only requires students to think deeply about their experimental results, but also how it asks them to apply them in a new context. Students not only collect and analyze data, they must seek a useful purpose or application of their results, giving the project real-world relevance.
