Why Parents Need to Let Their Children Fail - Jessica Lahey - The Atlantic - 0 views

  • her daughter would receive a zero for the plagiarized paper.
  • parents who raise their children in a state of helplessness and powerlessness, children destined to an anxious adulthood, lacking the emotional resources they will need to cope with inevitable setback and failure.
  • Overparenting is characterized in the study as parents' "misguided attempt to improve their child's current and future personal and academic success."
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • What worry me most are the examples of overparenting that have the potential to ruin a child's confidence and undermine an education in independence. According to the the authors, parents guilty of this kind of overparenting "take their child's perception as truth, regardless of the facts," and are "quick to believe their child over the adult and deny the possibility that their child was at fault or would even do something of that nature."
  • But children make mistakes, and when they do, it's vital that parents remember that the educational benefits of consequences are a gift, not a dereliction of duty
  •
This is an interesting article for all you students who have parents who may be tempted in "overparenting." I am sure none of your parents do this but sometimes it can actually be detrimental to you when your parents help you with everything. Oftentimes, defending our mistakes will hurt us when owning up to our mistakes will improve our character.  Failing should be motivation not pity.

Subway Footlongs are too short??? - 0 views

  •
Apparently Subways footlongs are 11" and not a full 12". This makes the Milford Subway shop at risk of closing.
  •
There is no with every single sub they make to be 12 inches every time
  •
I find it interesting how Subway responds to this controversy: "Subway attributes the discrepancy in sub length to the fact that the bread is baked fresh daily in each of their 38,000 restaurants." That is a pretty good spin, they turned a negative into a positive.

N.Korea plans nuclear test, rocket launch - This Just In - CNN.com Blogs - 0 views

  • North Korea said Thursday that it plans to carry out a new nuclear test and further long-range rocket launches, all of which it said are a part of a new phase of confrontation with the United States.
  • "upcoming all-out action" that would target the United States, "the sworn enemy of the Korean people."
  •
North Korean agenda explicitly stating the USA as their main enemy. North Korea also plans on continuing to test its missile program along with furthering tests to go nuclear.  I think it's interesting that they would actually come out and say these things. Before North Korea was always aggressive but for the most part kept to themselves. If I were them I would not want to make the USA angry. Look at history, you don't want to awake the sleeping giant or the giant who is busy somewhere else.

When in doubt, Spit All Over It!!! - 0 views

At the Miami Marlin vs. the Phillidelphia Phillies game, the Marlin's pitcher Alex Sanabia had had 8 home runs hit off of his pitches. He was getting a little frustrated, so he did something to the ball that is suprisingly illegal....He hocked a loogey onto the ball before the next Phillies batter came to home plate. It is unsure whether he will be suspended for putting a "foreign" substance of the new ball to help his pitching.

Fire ants have plagued the south for years. Now, many people want the fire ants to return. Why, because the newer "crazy ants" are even worse. They multiply faster and invade all living space. Sometimes, you don't know what you have is good until it is gone.
