Pope calls for peace around the world in Easter message - 0 views

  •
During an annual Easter message Pope Benedict the XVI called peace in the Midwest and areas in Africa. The pope also urged the restoration of "peaceful coexistence" in Ivory Coast, where a political stalemate led to violence. The pope also said that young people of Western Nations should work together for a common good. He also said that the people of these nations should build a society where poverty is defeated. Finally, the pope hopes that the victims in Japan will find consolation and hope in the after math.
  •
It would be nice if his ideas actually became true but they probably never will.
  •
People do need peace right now. There is so much fighting going on throughout the world that could be stopped.

Women vs Chilies - 7 views

A lady found a sewing needle in her ribs and mashed potatoes.

Interesting article, Ryan. I hadn't heard about this before. When tagging, common words like "lady" aren't always the best choice as they are too general. Better tags from a folksonomy standpoint may have been HIV, Chile's, needle, food, etc.
  •
Wow this is bad. She is probably going to win that case. People can't be lenient with that kind of stuff. She could've possibly tested positive for many infections.
  •
People need to be more careful when preparing food. Swallowing the needle could of caused problems and injured the woman. There shouldn't be a needle in a kitchen in the first place.
  •
This makes you want to think twice before going to eat out at a restraunt. She will most likely win her case against Chilies. There is no excuse for a needle being in food.
  •
If i ever found a needle in my food i would sue them also. Yea she could have got HIV from it or another disease, but what is she swallowed it.
  •
I wonder if the lady put the needle in her food and then just said that it was in there. She really doesn't have any proof that they put it in there. Also, Chilies doesn't use needles in any way to prepare their food so why would it be in their.

Deadly Cobra, missing from Bronx Zoo - 0 views

  •
A venomous Egyptian cobra went missing from New York's Bronx Zoo. Zoo officials said they are confident the 20-inch-long snake is contained in a nonpublic, isolated area of the building. The Egyptian cobra is most commonly found in North Africa. The venom destroys nerve tissue and causes paralysis and death due to respiratory failure. It can kill a human in less than 15mins and a fully grown elephant in 3 hours.

James ~ be sure when summarizing, you summarize. I can see that you chose various facts/sentences throughout the article and what you chose was great in giving a short overview of the important parts of this article. Be sure, however, to always use your own words to retell what you read versus direct sentences from the source. Did I just see somewhere, too, that one escaped in California?

Earthquake in japan - Video Footage - 0 views

People say what happened in Japan isn't natural, yet its nothing but natural. What do you think when the Mammoths roamed the earth and the ice age happened. There was nothing they could do, and that leads me to the earthquake in Japan. Yes, it was high for normal numbers these days but the worlds axis rotating which is natural.
  •
I think its awesome to see how countries come together at a time like this. This should make the United States feel better about themselves also. By helping others, it will give us a good impact and if we are in need of help someone will be there for us.
  •
Absolutely, Kristen. It is very devastating, too, and unfortunate. Most people don't realize that it is in every country's best interest to do so. In this day and age, our economies are much more interdependent and like throwing a pebble into the pond, there will be some ripple effects that will surface within our own economy as a result of the Japanese events.

Age to buy cigarettes to get raised to 21 - 3 views

shared by brett V. on 19 Apr 11 - No Cached
  •
According to the University of Michigan's annual survey of the Nation's adolescents, in 2006, about one- fifth of U.S. seniors smoked monthly, down from more than one-third who did so in 1996. Signs in the most recent surveys indicate that smoking among younger teenagers might be on the rise. The cost of cigarettes, usually a strong predictor of a decline in teen smoking, continues to rise. Yet more than 40% of high school students today have tried smoking before they graduated. The only thing left to do is to raise the legal purchasing age to 21.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
I don`t think it should be raised. Teens are still going to smoke.
  •
Well you know today 12 year old children can simply get cigarettes with the slightest ease. So I really don't think its such a big deal, but if I was the Cigarette company I sure would be. Also Next where going to have to be 30 to drink and 26 as an official adult. FREEEEEEDOOOOMMMMM!!!!! lol
  •
I think the price should be doubled, maybe even tripled. There are no benefits to smoking at all. Just a way for tough guys to waste money maybe. If the prices are raised, people will still buy them I know. But that just goes to show you how addicting they are. Better yet, the age should be changed to 21. Change both of those variables and you'll see a positive change in our citizens, thats my opinion though.

Donald Trump for President. - 3 views

  •
Barak Obama apparently doesn't have a birth certificate according to Donald Trump. It is supposed to be in a vault in Hawaii where Barak was supposed to be born but now we really are not sure. At first i was thinking this is just probably because of the fact that he is going to be running against Obama in the next election but now i'm not so sure. There is a good possibility that he is actually not a member of the United States. Let alone not even legally. If Barak has any sort of birth certificate it shouldn't be that hard to find it considering he is the president of the United States. For some reason they have yet to find it. Either it was never created or somebody along the years had lost it.

Well then I will make sure to not vote for Obama next election.
  •
Before he was eligible to become president, things like this should of been figured out.
  •
    Vote for Donald Trump.................
  •
Donald Trump just needs something to try and get voters on his side since he has never done anything political before. It would be terrible if he became president of our country in the next election.
  •
I think that Barak was probably born in the United States and his birth certificate is just MIA as of right now, even thought a birth certificate should not be hard to find. Considering you need it for many things, he should have it in his possession. Donald Trump should be president.
  •
If the man had a Birth certificate they would have found it by now he is the president of the united states i believe trump is telling the truth and someone should've looked into this better when obama was running for president.
  •
If Donald Trump was president i'm sure it couldn't get any worse then what Barak is doing now:)
  •
I believe that Obama was born in the US. If he wasn't then i doubt that he would of became president in the first place because someone would have asked for proof of where he was born.
  •
How could you run for president without proof of being born here? Come on, what is the U.S comming to?
  •
    Get him Trump!
  •
I would vote for trump. Cause Obama is changing our live for ever we need some one else in office.
  •
I personally think Donald Trump will actually help us out.

Father: Why I didn't let my son take standardized tests - The Answer Sheet - The Washin... - 0 views

  • My wife and I had Luke “opt out” of No Child Left Behind standardized testing (here in Pennsylvania known as the Pennsylvania System of School Achievement, or PSSAs).
  • Last week I did just that. I looked at the test and determined that it violated my religion. How, you might ask? That’s an entirely different blog, but I can quickly say that my religion does not allow for or tolerate the act of torture and I determined that making Luke sit for over 10 hours filling in bubble sheets would have been a form of mental and physical torture, given that we could give him no good reason as to why he needs to take this test.
  • ch a reason for opting out of the PSSA testing will negatively affect the school’s participation rate and could POTENTIALLY have a negative impact on the school’s Adequate Yearly Progress under the rules of No Child Left Behind.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • The point was to give Luke some experience in how to conduct planned civil disobedience in a lawful manner.
  • This time, instead of having Luke sit through another meeting, he researched the Japanese earthquake and tsunami as a current events project.
  • I asked Luke what he thought about it all. He just smiled. I also asked him what some of his friends were saying. According to Luke, they did not believe that NCLB and PSSAs were going to be used to evaluate the school. They didn’t know about AYP and the sanctions that came with it. Luke’s friends just thought the tests, “were used to make sure our teachers are teaching us the right stuff.” My guess is that is what most parents believe. Why wouldn’t they believe it? They’ve been told for nine years that we are raising standards, holding teachers accountable, and leaving no children behind. Who wouldn’t support that?
  • That, of course, is the real problem. NCLB and the standards movement is a political bait and switch. Sold as one thing (positive) to the public and then in practice, something radically different (punitive). This is probably one of the biggest reasons I decided to do the boycott—to make my community aware and to try and enlighten them of the real issues.
  • My answer is that the government is not listening. Teachers, principals, teacher educators, child development specialists, and educational researchers have been trying to get this message out for years. No one will listen.
  • Civil disobedience is the only option left. It’s my scream in a dark cave for light. I want teachers to teach again. I want principals to lead again. I want my school to be a place of deep learning and a deeper love of teaching. I want children exposed to history, science, art, music, physical education, and current events—the same experience President Obama is providing his own children.
  • Maybe civil disobedience will be contagious. Maybe parents will join us in reclaiming our schools and demand that teachers and administrators hands be untied and allow them to do their jobs—engage students in a rich curriculum designed to promote deep learning and critical thinking.
  •
Another PA parent opts his child out of PSSA standardized testing as a measure of civil disobedience.  Word of caution:  This can very much hurt a school's Adequate Yearly Progress and ultimately the school may suffer.  But, what if this movement spread amongst parents?  What then?  Would the government take over the school?  Change is hard.

Burden of College Loans on Graduates Grows - 0 views

  •
Student loans debt surpassed credit card debt for the first time ever in 2010. It is predicted that the debt will top a trillion dollars this year. In 2008 two-thirds of students who graduated with a bachelor's degree were in debt after school. The average amount of debt for students in college for the 2011 school year was $24,000. There have been many predictions that the debt will increase because of budget-slashing. Economists say "while debt may be a bad thing it is a healthy investment."

Obama born in U.S. - 1 views

  •
Skeptics and conspiracy theorists have been attacking president Obama with their doubts that he was born in America. Statistics show that 25% of citizens have doubt of his birth on U.S. soil. But, evidence has shown that he is a U.S. citizen. And was born in Hawaii. Proof such as the document of his birth in the newspaper, the birth certificate, and memories of the current governer of Hawaii as Barack was a baby.
  • ...2 more comments...

This is good, this will make all the skeptics finally shut up about our president being an American.
  •
The government can make the people of the United States believe whatever they want us to believe. Just because some piece of paper was copied onto a newspaper doesn't necessarily make something true. I believe that until there is an actual visual of his birth certificate then no so many people are going to believe that he really is a us citizen.

    Not according to Donald Trump.

Soldier gets 24 years in prison for killing Afghan civilians. - 5 views

So where putting soldiers in Libya to protect the innocent and here we are killing the innocent in Afghanistan.??? Does that make sense?
  •
The soldiers should be helping the civilians, not killing them.
  •
This guy should be representing our country the right way. He is making the us look bad. It sounds like he has some problems. Normal people don't go around killing others.
  •
The soldiers are there to help, not to kill the innocent civilians of Afghanistan. It disgusts me that any human being can kill somebody as a "sport". That is just messed up.
  •
I understand that killing innocent civilians isn't right. There must be something else behind all this. I dont believe that our soldiers should be put in prison for 24 years or even 22 years just for praticipating. We dont know how innocent these civilians really are.
  •
You would think soldiers would know better than to do that. They are fighting for us and then we have to talk about them because they do something stupid like this. Ya know what i mean?
  •
I understand that there are certain people who need to be killed, the people who are doing harm to the civilians are in the wrong. The soldiers are there to kill the bad people, not to make a sick game out of killing innocent people.
  •
James has a really good point, here. What if there is a bit more to the story? Was it truly a completely innocent a civilian? (Mmm... maybe I should go in and actually read the story. The conversation surrounding the article definitely makes it more interesting and makes me want to take a further look into it. Nice job, students!

12 people dead in a subway bomibing - 0 views

  •
There was a subway bombing that left 12 people dead. It also left more than 200 wounded in Belarus. The interior minister says it was a radio-controlled bomb that was used. The bomb was placed under a bench at a busy subway station. He also says, police have created composite pictures of two male suspects using testimony from witnesses. Another official says several people have been detained in the investigation. It's not clear if those people are considered suspects. Earlier, the domestic security agency in the former Soviet nation said it had identified the likely attacker.
  •
That is horrible. Twelve innocent people died for most likely no reason.

Ford: Best first quarter since '98 - 1 views

  •
Ford Motor combined strong sales and improved pricing to roar past earnings forecasts and post its best first-quarter profit since 1998. Ford earned $2.6 billion, up 22% from last year. They did this by lowing prices on cars and making the most sold cars in America. This has been Fords best since 1998. They are currently the company withe the most cars sold.

Because ford is reasonably priced and keeps close watch on the economy. Every other car company out there needs to follow in ford's footsteps to keep the balance in our economy.
  •
In New York a ford motor combined sales and improved pricing to roar past earning forecasts. This started in 1998. Ford earned $2.6 billion, or 61 cents a share, up 22% from a year earlier, the company said Tuesday. In 1998 was the last time they earned that much in the first quarter. The past quarters performance performance underlined the continued turnaround at the company, which has now posted seven straight quarters of profit after years of losses.
  •
You would think with the economy, vehicle sales would go down. But it's good to hear that they are not, at least for Ford their not.
  •
Hopefully this will continue and help the boost the rest of our economy.
  •
This would be good for them because then it would help them out

Hopefully things stay good for them.

Missouri levee fails - 0 views

  •
A compromised levee in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, failed Tuesday. This is forcing authorities to order more evacuations in the region. The levee failed in at least four locations along a two-mile stretch. he failure was expected to send flood waters from the Black River racing into a populated but rural area of Butler County. Police performed 59 water rescues Monday alone.
  •
I think river patrol or whoever takes care of the levees should most certainly watch over these levees more then they are. Obviously they aren't in the best shape anymore and should be fixed.

Lackawanna County, Eric Kovaleski, arrested for possession of cocaine after he was stopped for running a red light in Scraton.

I think he should be fired.
  •
No i do not think that the superintendent should still remain a member. He broke a law and in school they tell that drugs are bad and you shouldn't do them, but he does them and got caught. If he stays a member the kids might get the idea that drugs are okay to do.
  •
No I do not think that he should be because thats harming the students and if you do that then there just has to be something wrong with that person. Get that person out of there fire him.
  •
Like Ryan said he should be fired, he broke the law and thats the end of the line for him it would'nt be right for him to stay on the school board and be making decisions for students.
  •
I don't think that it's okay that he's still a member of the school board. He's setting a bad example for not only the students, but the community.
  •
No, he should definitely not be. It's cocaine. It's a serious drug.
  •
I do not think he should be fired. Although cocaine is a harder drug then most others, the man never had any or caused any problems since he has been part of the school board. I think it's in his best interest to resign only because he has made a name for himself already and it will be hard to prove to kids in his school that he's drug free.
  •
I think that this guy should be fired. He is suppose to be a role model to the students and is on drugs? This is totally unacceptable. If I had a kid that went to that school I would be very afraid. Drugs are nothing to play with at the day in age and if your taking them you should not be around kids.
  •
I think he should have been fired also because no one should be doing drugs. Since he worked for a school he should of definetly been against it but he wasnt. If you want to do drugs it is your own fault for risking your job.
  •
He should not be aloud around the school and he should be kicked of the school borad for selling drugs....we need to get drugsd of the streets and now adults are giveing them to kids to use or even sell . that is not right

survior of bear attack - 1 views

  •
57-year-old Jacqueline Berghorn came face-to-face with a bear at her home in Center Harbor, New Hampshire. It pushed her down and she hit a glass door. The bear then ran away, right through a fence. Berghorn said it came back and her husband fired two shots at it. He missed and the bear ran off.One of Berghorn's neighbors said a bear killed six chickens on his property Sunday, but it's believed to be a different bear.

That lady is really lucky that bear did grab a good hold of her.
  •
Something must have triggered the bear to do something like that. Normally bears are very afraid of people unless their cubs are around or they're harmed.
  •
Thats something that will jump start your day. Being attacked by a bear. Invest in a fence like in jurassic park, no bear would be even close to the household let alone the people inside.
  •
She must have found her pepper spray.
  •
I agree there had to be something that set the bear off. Whether it was hungry or scared it might have had a motive. At least no one was hurt.
  •
I agree with kayleen, the bear must have a motive behind doing this. Black bears arent really that mean of bears. they usually keep to themselves.
  •
It's not unlikely to have bears around our houses and places where we do activities. We just need to be careful in case we do see one to know what to do.
