This article seeks to open dialogue about the utility of resource mobilization theory in explaining social movements and their impact by exploring the use of social media in the 2011 Egyptian revolution through a limited case study analysis. It argues that social media played an instrumental role in the success of the anti-government protests that led to the resignation of the country’s dictatorial leader, and calls for further examination of the proposed incorporation of social media as an important resource for collective action and the organization of contemporary social movements.

A Look At The Youth Of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood : NPR - 2 views
-
Journalist Charles Sennott recently returned from Tahrir Square, where he was filming a documentary on the revolution for PBS's Frontline. He describes how various groups of the youth came together to support a common cause. The Muslim Brotherhood had a very strategic role in the revolution. They hesitated to join in the beginning, and then the youth in their group pushed for greater involvement. The Brotherhood brought a lot of organization to the revolution. They positioned themselves as a central force of the revolution rather than a leading player in the uprising. They did not want Mubarak to pin the revolution on them. And it was not their revolution--it was a revolution of all Egyptians. Although the Muslim Brotherhood is aiming toward more of a social movement toward Islamic incorporation into the structure of society, they also want to establish themselves on the political playing field.

It is interesting to see how the conflict has affected the borders between Syria and Turkey. After allowing movement across the border, Turkey is now demanding a "secure line" be created inside Syria. This is especially interesting because those regions have been somewhat fought over between both countries over the past century.

The Muslim Brotherhood initially started as a movement to spread Islamic morals and goods but later became involved in political matters. Under British rule and the Egyptian government, the movement has been in direct opposition of individuals in charge and many of their ideals. Through different political moves the group has obtained some power, which has made an impact on many Egypt elections.

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is facing a difficult time, especially after the end of Morsi's presidency and now crackdown on the Brotherhood which has been called a terrorist organization. It used to be a group that was involved in spreading morals from the Quran, but now has turned into a political group as well. This does not go too well, especially in a time for the Middle East where democracy, secularism and Islamists are clashing heads.
Women's rights in post-revolution Egypt - Asfar - 0 views

Unprecedented state violence against women between the time of the revolution (2011) and the election of a new government (2012) contravened international law, and violated the spirit of the revolution.
-
Egypt’s first democratically-elected, post-revolution government overwhelmingly failed to recognise crucial women’s issues such as marital rape and human trafficking and contributed to the culture of sexual harassment; one of the most pressing problems for Egyptian women today.
