    The Algerian government does not recognize human trafficking an illegal offense. Instead Algerian authorities use the offenses of "hiding and exchange of children", "abuse of job authority to sexually exploit others", "forced prostitution" and others to prosecute some forms of trafficking in persons.

The attack comes as Tunisian forces on the Libyan border are on high alert in the wake of the murder of 21 Egyptian Christians in Libya by another radical Islamic group. They are aware of Egyptians fleeing Libya. Tunisians have been under attack by Islamic militants ever since the overthrow of their dictator in 2011.

    Human trafficking is an often occurrence in Algeria where men and women are illegally smuggled in and through the country. Men are typically subjected to force labor or prostitution while women are more commonly forced into prostitution. Algeria is currently rated a Tier 3 which means they are making no significant changes to end the human trafficking.
