"OLAT, an open source learning management system (LMS), has been updated to version 6.3, expanding various media resources, adding new search capabilities, and enhancing notifications and reporting. OLAT ("Online Learning And Training") is a Java-based open source LMS that originated in 1999 at Switzerland's University of Zurich , which currently leads its development. At present, it's used in a wide range of academic institutions, medical organizations, and computing centers throughout Europe. (A complete list of these institutions, and further information, can be found on the main OLAT server here.) Some of the more important additions to version 6.3 are in the new types of learning resources supported. These now include podcasts, blogs, topic assignments, and calendars. In terms of podcasts, OLAT 6.3 has now added the ability to create, import, edit, and export podcasts, with support for metadata, RSS feed generation, and linking to external services (iTunes, Google, or Yahoo)."

When we think about difficult concepts, it helps to think with models, smaller versions of systems that we can hold in our minds or sketch on paper. Science teachers, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards, recognize the importance of understanding models. Primary sources from the Library of Congress collections invite students to explore how different models of the universe have developed over time, and to think a bit more generally about interpreting models.

"Establish a set of vendor-independent and language-independent interface standards for drivers that provide plug-and-play control of astronomical instruments and related devices. Provide general requirements and guidance for quality and behavior of drivers. Promote the use of these standard drivers from any astronomy-related software. Ensure that drivers are usable from the widest possible variety of programs and languages, including Windows Active Script languages and Automation based tools. Promote (but not absolutely require) open-source implementations of the drivers. "Audio materials in the collections of the Library of Congress can be reproduced only when all rights restrictions have been cleared. These may include donors, copyright holders, record companies, artists, radio networks, licensing organizations, unions, etc. The Motion Picture Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division (M/B/RS) requires anyone wishing to obtain copies to secure written authorization for the Library to make the reproductions from any and all rights holders. While M/B/RS Reference staff can usually be of some assistance in determining what permissions are required, the onus is on the researcher to obtain them. We strongly urge requestors to listen to recordings before ordering. Since our cataloging information often derives from print sources, not the actual recording, we cannot guarantee that our catalog records for unpublished materials reflect the tape contents in all cases. In addition, the audio quality may vary, as it is dependent on the fidelity and condition of the original recording. After contacting M/B/RS reference staff to identify the specific items to be copied, audio requestors will be referred to the Division's Public Services Office, which serves as the business arm of the M/B/RS Magnetic Recording Laboratory. In addition to other outreach services, the Public Services Office operates a fee- for-service operation for the duplication of audio and moving image materials."
