  • One-hundred forty-six assessment examples were sent to us, and we used all of those in one way or another in the book. I think it’s a pretty fair sample of what’s going on in higher education assessment. Yet most of the programs that we looked at had only been underway for two, three, or four years. When we asked what the long-term impact of doing assessment and using the findings to improve programs had been, in only six percent of the cases were the authors able to say that student learning had been improved.

    You Only Get This Type of Education in Class - Mythic Attributes of the Lecture Good discussion of the use of the lecture in online learning, both on whether it is advisable, and on how to approach the idea. Given that the lecture has such a bad reputation, why do I produce so many of them? What I have found is that I do some of my best thinking though speaking. Giving a talk forces me to reconceptualize my thoughts. So for me, a lecture is inevitably a learning experience. As for my audience, well, I have often maintained that they learn very little from the content of the lecture, and much more from my mannerisms and approach. A lecture (like a demonstration) isn't a learning event (except for the speaker), it's an enabling event, a celebration of what we already know and believe. That course disrupted my notions of participation, identity, and community, and the changes are for the better. The course was so intellectually stimulating that when the course ended, I experienced a tremendous loss. The loss was so great that I felt myself trying to create Twitter communities in my future classes because I missed that engagement.     Students used different technologies, not one set mandated system for the e-portfolios. In 2006, Clemson University implemented the ePortfolio Program that requires all undergraduates to create and submit a digital portfolio as evidence of academic and experiential mastery of Clemson's core competencies. Students collect work from their classes and elsewhere, connecting (tagging) it to the competencies (Written and Oral Communication; Reasoning, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving; Mathematical, Scientific and Technological Literacy; Social Science and Cross-Cultural Awareness; Arts and Humanities; and Ethical Judgment) throughout their undergraduate experience.

    Yes.. That is something I'd really like to use. My laptop warranty is out, they won't sell me any more extensions, one hard disk is loosing more and more sectors (and Maylee pulled off the right ALT key last night). Now only if Google Mail enabled me to build a number of views (filters) of my email (not just one), and Docs had inline revision viewing, I'd be ready to use it more. As it is, I use a variety of office apps because each seems to have strengths in different areas. I sometimes even move between apps with the same document. Mostly, I use OpenOffice, Google Docs, Microsoft Office, and LyX. LyX is the most philosophically advanced, I think.... but none escape the subjectivity of the matter. LyX removes any concern for how the document looks. You tell it what each information element is, not how it should look. Then you export to various formats and styles. Information search is vastly more powerful when all information elements are tagged according to what they are. And it produces just very beautiful content. OpenOffice has the broadest set of import/export capabilities and also with the best quality results, I'd say. All tables in all document types being accessible as database tables is also sometimes useful, as well as a variety of other capabilities. Google Docs is obviously best at collaboration but I find it sometimes frustrating to get formatting I want or working with revisions from others and myself. Microsoft Office is pretty high quality and full featured, as most realize, but lacks in import/export quality in comparison with some alternatives.

Daniel Rosenberg - Early Modern Information Overload - Journal of the History of Ideas ... - 1 views

  • During the early modern period, and especially during the years 1550-1750, Europe experienced a kind of "information explosion." I emphasize the word "experience" as this is an essential element to the arguments presented here. There is ample evidence to demonstrate that during this period, the production, circulation, and dissemination of scientific and scholarly texts accelerated tremendously. In her essay, Ann Blair notes that over the course of this period, a typical scholarly library might have grown by a factor of fifty, while Brian Ogilvie demonstrates an equivalent acceleration in the production and consumption of texts in the domain of natural history; and there is a large literature to back both of these arguments up. But the fact of accelerated textual production and consumption is not what is principally at issue here. What is essential is the sense that such a phenomenon was taking place and the variety of responses to it.

  • She examines the varieties of textual practices "deployed by early modern scholars" in response to a perceived "overabundance of books" during the period between 1550 and 1700, and she argues that historians have paid disproportionate attention to what she calls "literary reading" and not enough to other modes of encountering and engaging textual materials ranging from browsing and skimming to buying and collecting to annotating, cutting and pasting, and dog-earing. For Blair these other modes of acting upon texts are important in all historical moments, but in situations where readers feel themselves overwhelmed by information, they become all that much more crucial and telling.
  • "By the 1580s," Ogilvie writes, "the botanical tyro had to master a tremendous number of words, things, and authorities." And during this period botanical literature increasingly sought to address precisely this concern. Already in the 1550s, with the work of Conrad Gesner and Remert Dodoens, Ogilvie observes a shift from an older form of botanical treatise, descended from the alphabetical materia medica, to a new form organized around "tacit notions of similarity" among different natural types. Not that all of these developments were useful. As Ogilvie notes, the move toward similarity was not a direct move toward scientific taxonomy, and in different works vastly different categorical schemes applied, so that the same plant might be grouped with "shrubs" in one and, in another, with "plants whose flowers please." Eventually, with Caspar Bauhin at the end of the sixteenth century and John Ray at the end of the seventeenth, Ogilvie notes the rise of a new class of scientific literature aimed not only at describing and organizing natural facts but at doing the same work for scientific texts themselves.

  • The old encyclopedia of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance based its prestige on its claim to comprehensiveness. But by the middle of the sixteenth century, these claims had become very difficult for any single author or work to support. Ironically, as the plausibility of the old claims weakened, demand for the genre intensified. This is attested to by the great commercial success of the Cyclopaedia and by the still greater success of the renowned Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert. For the latter, just as for Chambers, the indexical format of the encyclopedic dictionary speaks to an epistemological urgency. In a world of rapid change, quick access to knowledge becomes as important as knowledge itself.
