Home - Public Health Image Library (PHIL) - 0 views

  •
Contents of this site: This site contains images of influenza, natural disasters, environmental health, bioterrorism, electron micro-graphic imagery, everyday activities, health behaviors, public health in action. The websites recommend that the site is good for those studying in the primary, secondary, or graduate levels. However, there is a "WARNING: This library includes subject matter that may be unsuitable for children. Viewing discretion is advised." This site would be ideal for science, health, social studies, language arts (research and informational writing) with regard to any of the topics listed above. Copyright and Protection: The site states with regard to copyright that most of the pictures are copyright free, but you need to double check. Below is a question answered from the websites FAQ that will help clarify the copyright regulations of the images in this website. "What regulations govern the use of images in the PHIL? Answer: Images are either "Public Domain" (free use) or "Copyright Protected" (restricted, obtain permission before use) Most of the images in the collection are in the public domain and are thus free of any copyright restrictions. If you look directly beneath the image you will see a fair use statement that tells you if the image is public domain or copyright protected. Permission is not required for public domain images, but we do ask that you credit the original institution and contributor, when known, whenever the image is used in any publicly distributed media. If the image is copyright protected, you will have to contact the content provider to obtain usage permission. PHIL does not have the authority to grant usage for any copyrighted images in the library. If you have difficulty contacting a content provider, we may be able to help, but we cannot act on their behalf."

Photo Everywhere - 1 views

PHOTO EVERYWHERE: You're asking how can these guys give their photos away for free? Are they ripped off from some else? WHATS THE CATCH??? Yes, they are FREE! - No, they are not ripped off! - This site is funded through the advertising on each page but we can only support our bandwidth fees while you help us by giving due credit (with a weblink or text attribution) where you use our images. For details please read the full terms. If you don't want or can't credit the site when you use the images (and we understand you don't really want a credit to photoeverywhere.co.uk on your business cards!) then there is an alternative: This site is also supported by our images being sold with a commercial license at valuestockphoto.com. If you need to use the images without a credit (attribution/web link) then you can buy a commercial licence and download any of the images found on this site from our travel stock image library at valuestockphoto.com; These images would be a great resource for science teachers of all grade levels. They offer photos from all over the world and could be used in such units like Biomes and Habits. Geography or Social Studies teachers would find this site useful when needing photos of regions around the world. For example: 6th grade studies Europe therefore the user could search photos from European regions to use in the classroom. One challenge for this site is there are so many images it does take some time to locate what you will need to use in the classroom. The website is visually pleasing and relatively easy to use. Galaxy of Images | Smithsonian Institution Libraries - 0 views

Here are images from the Smithsonian's amazing libraries! Low resolution images from this web site may be downloaded free for "personal, research or study purposes." If you need a higher resolution image, there is a small fee, but the policy states that the downloadable images may be used for classroom and student purposes. There are some great things here for science, social studies and ELA projects.

Find historical maps, geographical maps, cartographic maps, maps of battles, cities, town... This is a very good resource for a social studies teacher. It contains over 4.5 million items. This website may also be good for science teachers who are studying conservation or the travels of an explorer like Darwin. History teachers who study battles during war can find American Revolution, Civil War, WWII battle and campaign maps. Any lesson that requires a map, this is the place to go to first.

Open Music Archive - 0 views

This website offers a collection of out of copyright recordings, which would greatly serve to enhance a podcast. The site is easy to navigate and allows the user to download the audio file (MP3) to his/her desired location. After this file has been downloaded to the computer, students could then import the file into Audacity in order to edit the audio file to better fit their podcast. Student created podcasts would be a great way for middle school and high school students to convey their ideas or topics to a class. These can be done as individual or group projects. I especially see this type of activity being well suited for a Social Studies context, especially as a way to present research information. The correct application of music, to serve as an intro in a podcast, could greatly assist in the development of a polished final product. However, I would recommend sticking with the instrumental music for most uses within the educational context. But, the creation of a podcast within a history course could be enhanced with the accurate incorporation of time appropriate music. I believe for these music files to be incorporated into a podcast, to benefit the listener, the creator must have a working knowledge of Audacity. However, with the ability to pair Open Music Archive with Audacity can give the individual the tools necessary to create a product that would benefit learners through the multimedia platform.

Royalty Free Video Clips & Royalty Free Footage | BBC Motion - 0 views

This site offers a variety of different video clips. Some clips are free and some have to be purchased before downloading. Many of the highlighted clips included animals, family life, transportation, and other Kindergarten Social Studies content. There is material that would work with all grade levels and subject areas, but Social Studies was the first idea that popped into my head. There are a lot of news clips and weather clips as well. There are a lot of cool clips that show tornadoes in actions. BBC Motion Gallery is connected to BBC news, so you are able to access clips and news from around the world.

This image repository offers a wide variety of categories. The categories are listed at the top of the home page and are easy to navigate. Most of the photos offered are by amateurs free of charge. This repository requests that users give credit for images by providing a link. This could be best used with middle and high school students. It could also be a great source for middle school social studies students and teachers as the topics are organized by continents. Big Foto offers a great source of images that are neatly organized and easy to find.

The site host millions of pictures and the content is appropriate for students of all ages to use. During my preview of the website I notice images appropriate to use in social studies, science and other content area. The images are camera generated and animated. I do not foresee any problems in using the site because the content is filtered and is safe for young children to browse.

"Humanline.com is a visual library related to our civilization's history, art and science." These images resemble what one would expect to find in textbooks. Teachers, professors, and students can download and use these images for educational use, completely free. A search bar allows users to search tags and descriptions. The browse feature allows users to puruse images. The ideal audience would be teachers and/or students of social studies, art, or science. Any descriptions from the website must be quoted.

This resource is for video usage. All of the videos are for the public domain. The resources are free of use. The videos must not be utilized to imply National Park endorsement of a service, product, organization or individual with permission of the National Park Service. You are free to use these videos without a release from the National Park Service. Most of the videos are downloadable or zip compressed Quick TimeH.264 movie clips. The clips can be video editing applications, websites, and projects. This is a great resource for fourth and fifth grade social studies when teaching about the Civil War and Revolutionary War. It's great to assist in learning about monuments, battlefields and historical sites through video.

Royalty Free Stock Footage Video Clips - iStock - 1 views

This site provides a wealth of royalty free video footage for use in advertising, blogging, websites and even presentations. This resource provides video, photographic and audio resources on a royalty-free basis. This means that the user pays for the initial download of the content, without having to pay the original photographer or artist for each use of the material. The terms of agreement on this website also provides a $10,000 Legal Guarantee that protects the user of the content up to that amount. I personally, would use this site with middle and high school geography students. In many cases, geography falls into a social studies or science class if I recall correctly. Many of the video clips available have amazing video shots of different landforms and natural formations of nature. In order to show multiple sequences of various land forms, this site would be great for having instant access to incredible video clips. The quality of the work in the video portion of this website is remarkable. All of the content is shot in high quality and is downloadable in a range of size and quality. This site allows the for user to download in various frames per second as well to determine the exact quality available to the user for download.

Clipart of Flags, Countries, and Maps - 1 views

  •
This website contains clipart of maps and flags. This resource could be particularly useful in a Social Studies classroom for just about any grade Middle School through High School. I imagine the resources being used by teachers for instruction or students to use to create presentations where they need illustrations about various countries. One stipulation listed on the website is that permission must be given in order to use the country maps. Other than that, most sections list that the user is able to use the images free of charge without any formal permission. They do ask that if you choose to use their images that give a link back to their website. I thought it was very useful that the Flag Images included commentary on the country to which the flag belonged and a reason for the flag being as it is.

U.S. Government Photos and Images | USA.gov - 0 views

This website contains collections of images from many different government agencies. For example, the National Parks Service, NASA, the U.S. Mint, branches of the Military, and many, many more. The photos could be very useful in Science, Social Studies, and probably other classes as well. From just some quick research, it looks like the collections of images might best be suited for middle and high school students. The website states that some of the images may be used without permission or fee but the user should read the disclaimers to make sure of the copyright status.

SchoolTube is a free media sharing website for students and teachers to upload videos for free for educational purposes. These videos can be categorized by age or subject matter to make finding them more simplified for users. I like that this website allows students to upload videos for classmates, morning announcements, course content, and study materials for tests. I also like that this website is easy to sign up for and easy to use.

OpenPhoto is a free source of stock photos that only require attribution. The photos are searchable and span many organized categories. Some of the photos are high quality, and others aren't quite what I'd call HD, but it's fairly easy to track down what you need. I see no reason why middle school and high school students couldn't use this site. Anytime they needed a picture for a PowerPoint or some other project they were working on, I could direct them to this site to get great photos that are easily attributed to the creators thanks to handy copy and paste instructions on the individual photo's site. I don't see many issues arising with this one. I'm hoping everything here is clean (haven't searched too deeply to ensure it's all school appropriate). Overall, it looks like an easy way to find pictures to add to presentations, projects, and other activities without infringing on copyright.
