Noteflight - Sign In - 2 views

We built Noteflight because we looked at where software is today, and saw that applications for writing music were stuck in the past. We wanted to accomplish a few important goals: Make it easy to create and share written music online. People who make music -- amateurs and professionals, students and teachers -- want to share that music with others, sooner or later. But most software for working with notated music treats the Internet as an afterthought: it's geared to saving your music on your own computer's hard disk, not to sharing your music with other people. It's painful to share musical scores online today, and as software inventors, we knew how much better it could be. People expect to be able to do their creative work wherever they go, and a crop of new browser-based applications make it incredibly easy to create and publish word-processing documents or spreadsheets online. We feel musical documents should be just as accessible. Empower developers to build a new world of musical and educational applications. Applications today should be not only powerful tools, but building blocks that can be combined in ways that their creators have never foreseen. A truly powerful musical application should be extensible without having to open it up and change the code. Adding new instruments and symbols, or embedding in a page and building new kinds of connections with other content -- all of these things should be possible. A great tool lets creative people not only use its built-in capabilities, but extend them and freely reorganize them in new ways. As Bertrand Meyer, a pioneer of software thinking, once put it: "Real systems have no top". Encourage a vibrant community of users by keeping the basics free. Music notation software vendors continue to charge high prices for boxed software, CD and DVD distribution media, and printed manuals. Then once you buy something, you're basically stuck with it until the next major upgrade cycle comes around, at which point you pa

Easy Duplicate File Finder | File Management Download | PCWorld - 12 views

  •
"Use your PC long enough, and it will get littered with duplicate files of all kinds. Graphics files, .doc files, media files, .dll files, you'll be amazed at how many duplicates you have. They clog up your hard disk, take away precious hard disk space, and make it hard to find the files you want. This simple freebie will find duplicate files, then let you delete the ones you don't want. Point it at your hard disk or selected folders, and it goes to work, finding duplicates. It then gives you a full report, and lets you clean them en masse, or just selected ones. There's some nice intelligence built in as well. It tells you how much disk space duplicate files take up, for example, and lets you protect system files so that you don't accidentally delete any important files your PC needs in order to run properly. The emergence of the networked information economy is unleashing two powerful forces. On one hand, easy access to high-speed networks is empowering individuals. People can now discover and consume information resources and services globally from their homes. Further, new social computing approaches are inviting people to share in the creation and edification of information on the Internet. Empowerment of the individual-or consumerization-is reducing the individual's reliance on traditional brick-and-mortar institutions in favor of new and emerging virtual ones. Second, ubiquitous access to high-speed networks along with network standards, open standards and content, and techniques for virtualizing hardware, software, and services is making it possible to leverage scale economies in unprecedented ways. What appears to be emerging is industrial-scale computing-a standardized infrastructure for delivering computing power, network bandwidth, data storage and protection, and services. Consumerization and industrialization beg the question "Is this the end of the middle?"; that is, what will be the role of "enterprise" IT in the future? Indeed, the bigger question is what will become of all of our intermediating institutions? This volume examines the impact of IT on higher education and on the IT organization in higher education.

The Manual Works Prompter 5.4 Download - Freeware Files.com - Audio & Video Category - 13 views

  •
Do you ever need to read a script of any sort, for any reason? Would you find it easier if the script scrolled ´before your very eyes´ just like a professional ´teleprompter´ or ´autocue´ device? Then The Manual Works Prompter is for YOU! The Manual Works Prompter is a simple HTML Application (HTA file), and you can check and modify its content using any text editor including Notepad. Like a Web page, it needs no installation whatever and you can run it immediately from ANY media, including diskette and memory stick. The Manual Works Prompter loads, edits, and saves scripts as simple text files (TXT files). All you need to do is remember to save or move them to the SAME directory as the Prompter HTA file (the so-called Prompter directory). For the adventurous, or those experienced in HTML, you can include several HTML tags which the Prompter will honour when the script is displayed! Full details are in the supplied documentation.

"This week's Cool Tool, the new Pulse digital pen from LiveScribe, is still undergoing my evaluation since I've only had it about a month now, but it has already lived up to its predecessor, the now discontinued io2 digital pen from Logitech, which I nominated as a previous Cool Tool. I can see that this new Pulse pen has much more to offer, so I thought it worthy of bringing to your attention. "

SoundNote - Take notes with your iPad - 16 views

  •
SoundNote is the best way to take notes on your iPad. It tracks what you type and draw while recording audio, so you'll never worry about missing an important detail. While playing back your recording, just tap a word; SoundNote will jump right to that point in the audio. Use SoundNote's powerful drawing tool for quick sketches. It's easy to edit them, too. Tap a drawing to select it, or tap twice to select an individual stroke. From there, you can drag it to wherever you want, or tap "Delete" to get rid of it. Use two fingers to zoom and scroll.

From the Desk of David Pogue - Amazon's E-Book Service - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  •
What makes the Kindle successful is the effortlessness of it. One-click book buying. Forty-five-second book downloading. One-click book reading. Amazon tore down every last barrier, minimizing the number of steps at every turn. The convenience is amazing. So if they're going to bring those e-books to the iPhone, it had better be darned simple. And, sure enough, it is.

How to Integrate Wolfram Alpha into Science and Math Classes - 8 views

  •
What is Wolfram Alpha? It is a supercomputing brain. It provides calculates and provides comprehensive answers to most any science or math question. Unlike other search sources, you and your students can ask questions in plain language or various forms of abbreviated notation. Contrary to popular belief, Wolfram Alpha is not a search engine. Unlike popular search engines, which simply retrieve documents based on keyword searches, Wolfram computes answers based on known models of human knowledge. It provides answers which are complete with data and algorithms, representing real-world knowledge.

In the World of Facebook - The New York Review of Books - 6 views

  •
Facebook, the most popular social networking Web site in the world, was founded in a Harvard dorm room in the winter of 2004. Like Microsoft, that other famous technology company started by a Harvard dropout, Facebook was not particularly original. A quarter-century earlier, Bill Gates, asked by IBM to provide the basic programming for its new personal computer, simply bought a program from another company and renamed it. Mark Zuckerberg, the primary founder of Facebook, who dropped out of college six months after starting the site, took most of his ideas from existing social networks such as Friendster and MySpace. But while Microsoft could as easily have originated at MIT or Caltech, it was no accident that Facebook came from Harvard.

Social Bookmarking in Education - 15 views

  •
Many educators just use the favorites menu on their computer either at work or home. But what about when we're at home and need to get to a site we saved at school? This is where social bookmarking comes in! Bookmarking favorite links on the internet is something that can make life easier for us as educators - it means that it's easy to find a really neat site later when looking for it. Putting SOCIAL in Bookmarking The social part of social bookmarking works like this: you can share your links that you've saved through a service like Diigo with anyone else who uses Diigo. You can also use Diigo to see the interesting links that your friends and other people bookmark - this can be extremely useful for a team of teachers who like to share teaching resources. You can even search Diigo to find the many bookmarks that others have saved - it helps sort out the good sites, which is hard to do on most search engines. If a lot of other teachers have saved a link, you know it's at least popular. This article also addresses "What is tagging?" and "How do I use tags?"
