There is a significant amount of resource information and articles about teachers incorporating backchannelling in classrooms, mostly at the post-secondary level.

Backchannel chat room. Seems like it is easy to create a secure chatroom, but there are several tools that are just as easy or easier. 

Backchannel tool geared to provide more student interaction during lecture and direct instruction. Has profanity filters for those concerned about student comments in an open environment. Provides instructors immediate feedback and students engagement in a uni-directional teaching environment. 

Great twitter like site designed for schools and classrooms. Great for sharing research and backchannel conversations that have research breaks built into them because students and teachers can embed images, videos, and links for sharing. If a school is concerned about twitter and access, this would be a great classroom alternative. 

Using 'netbooks' in classrooms, but underlying theme is creating centers with students and creating backchannels to have students discuss their learning/lessons.

Great discussion about using Twitter in the classroom as a backchannel tool

Great set of tips for using Twitter more effectively. I really like #3, because it's all about interaction in my opinion. If working with teachers on backchannel conversations/routines, then these tips should help the teachers understand how to support the process more effectively. Thanks Clif for sharing!

In the ever emerging world of microblogging sites, edmodo is designed for use in classrooms or at least designed for use by teachers to keep students updated on assignments, sharing during backchannel discussions. A little cleaner looking than twitter and doesn't have the same clutter or posts that are not warranted. Probably still blocked in schools, but at least worth looking at if you are considering microblogging with your students for instructional purposes.

Great post by Clarence Fisher about reading a novel with another class via Skype and how he is using technology to build the conversation. Instead of being afraid of letting students chat online, he is developing their skills. Rather than hiding some of the less rigorous comments, he's sharing with everyone, so he can learn along with us.
