YES! Magazine Timeline :: 100 Years of Human Rights in the U.S. - 1900s - 0 views

  • Imbeciles, the feeble-minded, tuberculars, persons with physical or mental defects," and those under 16 without parents excluded from entry as of 1907

It is sad that the USA would exclude people with physical or mental disabilities. I think it is really judgmental and ugly of the USA because those people need a safe haven to call their home. Also in 1903, how they excluded epileptics is unfair and horrific. It said "Imbeciles, the feeble-minded…excluded from entry as of 1907" what determines someone as an imbecile or feeble-minded? Did they make the immigrants take an IQ test? I think that some of the policies of who can come into the USA are ridiculous back in the day.

A Payoff Out of Poverty? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Lewis singled out elements of a culture that, he argued, keep those socialized in it mired in poverty: machismo, authoritarianism, marginalization from organized civic life, high rates of abandonment of illegitimate children, alcoholism, disdain for education, fatalism, passivity, inability to defer gratification and a time orientation fixed firmly on the present

It seems to be that these factors are the cause of poverty, but there are other factors that come into play such as Hurricane Sandy. I don't think its entirely fair to say that only the Mexican culture experiences poverty because of those factors. I think these factors are universal. Machism would just be a guy thinking he is better than every one else.

I am kind of confused by the TED Talk but I got the jist of what he was saying. I don't think ideas are just floating around i think that there are built within us and later discovered.

  • evidence is only as valuable as the ability to communicate it successfully.

This is very true! Most times when there is game changing evidence that could be the key to a case, the only way it will be acknowledged is if the presenter can properly express themselves.

PublicAffairs Books: THE POLITICAL BRAIN - 8 views

  • This is the first goal of any campaign because the way voters experience the party is the first influence on the way they will experience the candidate.
    • Sarah Marroquin

I think that the first goal of any political campaign is to lay the facts straight; tell the people exactly what you plan to do then follow through. I think more people should think about which option is more beneficial to the whole community instead of making decisions solely based on part affiliation.

What Makes Us Happy? - Joshua Wolf Shenk - The Atlantic - 0 views

  • From their days of bull sessions in Cambridge to their active duty in World War II, through marriages and divorces, professional advancement and collapse—and now well into retirement—the men have submitted to regular medical exams, taken psychological tests, returned questionnaires, and sat for interviews

This sounds like a science ficiton movie that is to come in the near future... It also seems that this is an interesting study, but time consuming to the point where the researcher, themselves, do not have a life of their own.

Does the Invisible Hand Need a Helping Hand? - Reason.com - 8 views

  • He was forever looking over your shoulder, constantly kibitzing and threatening you. In return, you worked as little as you could get away with. On the other hand, perhaps you've had bosses who inspired you—pulling all-nighters in order to finish up a project so that you wouldn't disappoint her.
    • Sarah Marroquin

I think it is ridiculous for people to base their work habits on how their bosses treat them. They should do a good job for the sake of their own morals and work ethics.

If Sweden is a perfect place for having children, and under the assumption that other wealthy countries have the technology to attain the same results; then why has our birth rate gone down in recent years?
