Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen details company's misleading efforts on 60 Minute... - 1 views

  •
Facebook is under tremendous backlash from whistle blower Frances Haugens, especially as the longest global blackout for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp occurs.
  •
Unfortunately, the whistleblower leak confirms what most people already suspected. I know there's been hearings on this subject on Capitol Hill, but I wonder if any policies will result from that. For a comparative politics questions, I wonder what data privacy laws and regulation on the actions of technology companies like Facebook are like.

House Passes Abortion Rights Bill : NPR - 1 views

  •
The House recently passed an abortion bill that could work to counteract the laws created in Texas.
  •
Unfortunately, I don't think this will matter all that much considering it'll never pass in the Senate. The best chance at counteracting the Texas abortion law is through the courts (DOJ currently suing Texas), but even then, chances aren't good with a conservative SCOTUS.
  •
I keep hoping one of the SCOTUS judges will shift course. . .

Taliban vow to respect women, despite history of oppression - 3 views

  •
Should be interesting to watch how the Taliban will execute this vow, especially since their spokesperson gave a pretty vague answer as to how the respect for women's rights would look within the Taliban.

I think it is very interesting that they feel the need to portray themselves as more moderate. It seems like their priority right now is getting some level of legitimacy. I also found it interesting that it used the example of Pakistan as a Muslim country with more rights. The government of Pakistan is openly supportive of the Taliban and has a history of providing financial and logistical help, so I wonder if they have had an influence on the Taliban's apparent moderation of their beliefs surrounding women. Here is an article about the Taliban's relationship with Pakistan: https://www.cfr.org/article/pakistans-support-taliban-what-know
  •
I also think it will be very interesting to see whether the Taliban follow through with the vow and what respect means to them. It seems like everyone is waiting to see if this vow is an indicator that the Taliban have changed their ways since their strict form of rule in the 1990s.
  •
Now we're at September 29, and the Taliban has closed girls' schools and colleges, women have to wear the burka, and the restrictions grow. . .

Thousands march in Ukraine for LGBT rights, safety - 0 views

  •
In Ukraine, thousands joined together to in the March for Equality to support the rights of the country's LGBT community. Ukraine has made some efforts in progress for LGBTQ rights, but many conservative groups have worked towards backpedaling their progress. Interesting to see the difference in equality in other countries, especially with Head-Royce celebrating bi-awareness week.

I did not know much, if anything, about LGBTQ rights in Ukraine, and I hope that these nonviolent protests result in positive change for the LGBTQ community there.
  •
I personally don't know very much about the queer community and LGBTQ+ rights in Ukraine, but I hope these protests help make the situation there better. While I hope for swift and immediate change, it seems like these protests might be met with inaction for a while. It's also possible that there's backlash from conservatives in the country. I think that the path to queer rights in Ukraine will, unfortunately, be a long and hard road. That said, I'm glad to see that people are willing to speak up and fight for rights in a country like Ukraine.

Yes to all of the comments, and this observation: social change is often not linear, though it may appear so at first.

Opinion | What Happened to America's Political Center of Gravity? - The New York Times - 3 views

  • The resulting scores capture how the groups represent themselves, not necessarily their actual policies.
  • The Republican Party leans much farther right than most traditional conservative parties in Western Europe and Canada, according to an analysis of their election manifestos. It is more extreme than Britain’s Independence Party and France’s National Rally (formerly the National Front), which some consider far-right populist parties. The Democratic Party, in contrast, is positioned closer to mainstream liberal parties.
  • the United States’ political center of gravity is to the right of other countries’, partly because of the lack of a serious left-wing party.

  • The Republican Party leans much
  • If we could put every political party on the same continuum from left to right, where would the American parties fall?
  • Conservative Party in Britain and the Christian Democratic Union in Germany — mainstream right-leaning parties
  • The difference is that in Europe, far-right populist parties are often an alternative to the mainstream. In the United States, the Republican Party is the mainstream.
  • Marine Le Pen
  • The Democrats fall closer to mainstream left and center-left parties in other countries, like the Social Democratic Party in Germany and Britain’s Labour Party,
  • Note: Circles sized by the percentage of the vote won by the party in the latest election in this data. Only parties that won more than 1 percent of the vote and are still in existence are shown. We analyzed parties in a selection of Western European countries, Canada and the United States.
  •
The visual accompanying this article was very useful! I found it helpful to compare the American political parties to European political parties. I always knew that American politics were very right-leaning, but I had no idea of the extent.

Los Angeles schools to require Covid vaccinations for students 12 and older | Los Angel... - 1 views

  •
The Los Angeles School districts are now requiring vaccines for children 12 and up. Children must be vaccinated by October 19, or they will not be allowed to attend in-person school.
  •
I think that the Los Angeles School district vaccination requirement is good news, especially since it is one of the larger school districts. I wonder which other school districts will follow this example, and I hope that other school districts will join the effort to protect their student's health.
  •
Good to see the vaccination being taken seriously ! ^And I agree with Julia: I hope other school districts will do the most in order to preserve student health.

They Put Everything Into Their Homes. Not One Was Spared in the Flood. - 3 views

  •
An entire block in Queens was destroyed, with barely any of the home owner's valuables left to save. As Ida moves north, with more and more rainfalls, people are unprepared for the damages they'll face. As of Wednesday, 40 are dead, 13 being from New York.
  •
This is really scary and seems to have left a lot of families devastated. Hopefully some aid efforts can help the people impacted by the flooding?
  •
This story is really well reported, and the photographer did a great job capturing the moment that the article talked about. It never ceases to amaze me how fragile our system is - always just a disaster away from financial ruin
