Abortion Is No Longer a Crime in Mexico. But Will Doctors Object? - The New York Times - 0 views

  •
Abortion was decriminalized in Mexico, but this decision faced lots of backlash, with many doctors saying that they would still not perform abortions. Also, there seems to be a general negative response or maybe a stigma around abortions.
  •
I wonder how this connects to religious issues; Mexico is 80% catholic and the catholic church is very clearly against abortion. I found it interesting that 45% support abortion because that means at least 25% of people are catholic and in favor of abortion.

Yes, David to the Catholic position on abortion in Mexico.

Why a New Abortion Ban in Poland is Causing a Furor - The New York Times - 0 views

  •
Polish citizens have violently protested in response to new restrictions on abortion. These restrictions will further Poland's already strict abortion policy by outlawing them even in cases of rape or fetal abnormalities. The government in Poland is heavily influenced by Christianity, which has also prompted them to condemn immigration (except for Christian immigrants) and gay rights.
  •
This reminds me of the many new abortion laws in the south last year, which were also founded out of the christian idea that life begins at conception. Some of the more egregious laws even proposed punishing women for miscarriages if an investigation found that they had some responsibility with the fetus' poor health. It didn't say in this article, but I wonder if a similar process occurs under this new law? How extreme is it in comparison to the US and the countries around it?
  •
What type of Christianity is dominant in Poland? All Christians are not necessarily anti-abortion. There are Christians of every political identity. . . . I just looked it up: "The overwhelming majority (around 87%) of the population are Roman-Catholic if the number of the baptised is taken as the criterion (33 million of baptised people in 2013)" source: Euruopean Commission Report: https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/national-policies/eurydice/content/

Justice Department Says U.S. Will 'Protect' Texas Women Seeking Abortions - The New Yor... - 2 views

  •
The Attorney General seems to condemn the Texas abortion ban. The 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act is supposed to protect women's rights to abortions. While this statement seems to be a good initial step, it's unclear how much the federal government can/will help challenge the Texas law.
  •
It's kind of weird that there are so many opinions about the ban. Some are just so contradictory with the law and misleading, I just wish there was clarification on it.
  •
Good point, Julian. We should discuss why the Texas abortion law does not actually declare it to be a crime. . . why is this their strategy?

India's Inverted Abortion Politics - The New York Times - 2 views

  • If the limits are allowed to stand, self-induced abortions are expected to rise, leading to an escalation of health dangers to women, particularly those who can’t afford to travel for help.
  • The government is trying to reduce the qualifications required of providers so that poor women will have easier access to abortions, while doctors are the ones opposing this relaxation of rules.
  • taboo in the religiously conservative country.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • The primary reason advanced for this opposition — concern for women’s health — is just as specious in India as it is in America.
  • given the pressure on Indian women to bear sons, the rule would promote more abortions of female fetuses
  • government’s promotion of alternative medicine as a medically equivalent but cheaper alternative to allopathic (modern) medicine.
  • scaled back its proposal to include only drug-induced procedures, a compromise allopathic doctors should accept.

House Passes Abortion Rights Bill : NPR - 1 views

  •
The House recently passed an abortion bill that could work to counteract the laws created in Texas.
  •
Unfortunately, I don't think this will matter all that much considering it'll never pass in the Senate. The best chance at counteracting the Texas abortion law is through the courts (DOJ currently suing Texas), but even then, chances aren't good with a conservative SCOTUS.
  •
I keep hoping one of the SCOTUS judges will shift course. . .

The gist seems to be that while Californians value abortion rights a lot more than other states, there are still a significant amount of people who believe that California should not protect abortion rights as much as it does.

What an America Without Roe Would Look Like - 1 views

  •
After the comment made by the Supreme Court, many believe that Roe v. Wade will be over turned. If it does 21 states will immediately ban abortion, making it very difficult for people to receive an abortion. For example, someone from Florida will have to travel roughly 600 miles round trip.
  •
This is extremely disheartening to read, especially knowing that immediately after the Roe is overturned, abortion will be banned in almost half of the states.

Spain abortion: Government works to repeal parental consent rule - 1 views

  •
Equality Minister Irene Montero is trying to reverse a 2015 ruling that mandated necessary parental consent for abortions under the age of 18. She says that the reform was "more than necessary".
  •
It is good to see Spain pushing for less strict abortion laws. I hope they can get the majority vote they need to pass this reform in parliament.

6-Week Abortion Ban Would've Barred Texas Girl, 13, Who Was Raped by Grandpa - 3 views

  •
This is extremely unsettling to hear and see. Pro-Lifers (or Pro-birthers) often antagonize women for making choices for their own bodies. And in instances of rape, they're victim-blamed as well. This child would have had no choice in the matter; her life could have been at risk, and so could her future.
  •
I think this is one of the evilest aspects of this anti-abortion bill. This sentence from the co-sponsor of the bill is especially chilling: "Let's harshly punish the rapist, but we don't, we don't punish the unborn child." He doesn't acknowledge how the woman is getting punished for the actions of the rapist as a result of this law.

Mexico's Supreme Court Decriminalizes Abortion : NPR - 0 views

  •
This is a bit of an older story, but this is a fascinating look at the effect of religion on reproductive policy in comparison to the United States. Why is Mexico, a heavily Catholic country, moving forward with its abortion access while the US is taking a step backwards?

Where Abortion Access Would Decline if Roe v. Wade Were Overturned - The New York Times - 3 views

  •
This is such an interesting map! Why are opinions on abortion divided in the regions they are? I mean, obviously, it indicates conservative and liberal areas, but why in the places that they are? What areas are surprising?
  •
This is so interesting! It's always important to look at who is affected most and why when it comes to reproductive justice.

How abortion rights are upending the US midterm elections - 1 views

  •
Interesting how abortion has completely upended the midterms and seems to have almost shot the republicans in the foot, turning the elections from a sure-fire win to a 50-50 chance of them retaking the senate and house.

China One-Child Policy - 1 views

  •
A horrifying recount of the government forcing a couple into abortion for their 8-month old baby. This sheds light on China's One-Child Policy, and even though China's economy is highly westernized, its social government is certainly not.
  •
I do not understand how China can be advancing in the world so quickly, and yet still be "kicking and punching" women in the stomach and forcing them to have abortions. As Harrison mentioned, the economy and social government in China are so separated, I wonder how long it will take for their social government to become westernized.

Welcome to Italy: this is what a real immigration crisis looks like » The Spe... - 2 views

  • Well, Italy has been invaded in just this way, by migrants from many nations all coming over here from Libya. And Italy’s unelected government has agreed to take them all. This makes the Italian people — who are among the least racist in Europe — very angry. It’s hard to blame them.
  • This hugely expensive operation — ‘Mare Nostrum’ — ran until October last year and rescued nearly 190,000 people.
  • ‘They don’t want to be identified here — otherwise, under the Dublin Accords, they would have to stay in our country. So when a police officer is in front of an Eritrean who is two metres tall who doesn’t want his fingerprints taken, he can’t break his fingers, but must respect his human rights.’
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Last year, most were from sub-Saharan Africa.
  • It’s worth remembering here that the majority of the boat people are Muslims and reports suggest that a small number are Islamic terrorists. The terrorists of ISIS are, we know from their Twitter feeds, obsessed with taking their crusade to Rome.
  • no intention of staying in Italy
  • has been mired in recession for most of the past six years, with an official unemployment rate of 13 per cent (the real rate is probably 20 per cent) and the youth unemployment rate at a staggering 43 per cent.
  • A couple of months ago, there was much talk about UN sanctioned military action by the EU to stop the smugglers’ boats putting to sea from the Libyan coast.
  • The French have ‘closed’ their border with Italy on the Côte d’Azur in defiance of the Schengen Agreement, which guarantees free movement within member nations. They are rigorously checking trains, cars and even footpaths across the mountains, and sending any illegal migrants back to Italy; they say they have sent back 6,000 this year. The justification is simple: the Italians are failing to identify these people and distinguish economic migrants from refugees. Who can argue with that? The Austrians are doing the same at the Brenner Pass in the Alps.
  • ‘an attack against life’ akin to abortion
  • All of us feel it to be our moral duty to save lives where we can. Yet it cannot be our moral duty to ferry such vast numbers across the Mediterranean into Italy and Europe for ever, unless they are genuine refugees.
  • Prime Minister Renzi tried to pretend that the migrant crisis did not exist, but now that it has turned into an emergency he can remain silent no longer. He blames other EU countries for putting the nation before the union — in this latest meltdown of EU collective responsibility — and the British and the French in particular for getting rid of Muammar Gaddafi and turning Libya into a failed state.

Trump Announces Barrett as Supreme Court Nominee, Describing Her as Heir to Scalia - Th... - 1 views

  •
Trump nominates conservative Amy Coney Barrett to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court and starts the race to get her confirmed before the November election, which is a mere 36 days away. In a process that typically takes 10 weeks, Trump wants to halve that time. There are concerns that her religious views and philosophy will interfere with her court decisions and Democrats plan on grilling her on her views of healthcare and abortion.
