Wall Street Protesters Speak - Video Library - The New York Times - 1 views

  •
Video interviewing some of the people occupying wall street. Mentions how they don't really have common goals yet. It's interesting to see the type - and diversity - of people involved in the movement.
  •
This is an important video to watch because it hits all of the complaints people have about this movement. It is also directly from those participating, as opposed to opinions that have been misconstrued and taken out of context by the media.

Occupy Wall Street Planning a National Convention, Releases Potential Demands - 0 views

  •
I never really knew much about occupy Wall Street, but it's really cool. It's like the "American Spring" or another American Revolution. The protesters seem to have a clear cut plan too. This articles discusses how the new "Demands Working Group" has drafted their own constitution which they've posted online. It demands that there be effort to create more jobs and that politicians be publicly supported in their campaigns rather than receiving money from private businesses. The movement of the "99%" seems strong and it is about time!

Wall Street Protests Spread to Four Continents, Arrests Climb - 0 views

  •
As occupy Wall Street protests spread across the globe, arrests rise in response to increased violence and disorderly conduct. In objection to the inequality of capitalism, protestors have taken to the streets in order to get their message across. The movement has spread to London, Rome, Hong Kong, Chicago, and more. Frustration at the current system has caused many protestors to seek more extreme ways to ge their message across, which in turn has led to more arrests.

Arab Spring inspires protests against corporate greed - 1 views

  •
This article makes an interesting connection between the Occupy Wall Street protests and the Arab Spring. The author suggests that the Arab Spring and the people's call for greater equality and freedom in the face of oppression have inspired other countries across the globe. Arab Spring shows the power that the young have in the new digital age, and this lesson has in a large part inspired young adults in other countries to protest against the injustices within their own society. IN the U.S. these protests have taken the form aversion and anger with the inequality that has resulted from our capitalist system

I think it is also interesting to note that both the Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street movements can in large part be characterized by large groups of people working towards lofty aspirations, but without tangible plans for moving forward. Arab Spring sought to overthrow the dictatorships, but didn't necessarily have a strategy for the new governments. Similarly, Occupy Wall Street protesters want to overthrow the current system, but don't have a realistic solution for the country's economic policy.

Wall Street Protesters Divided Over Occupy Movement's Demands - 2 views

  •
This article is about how the protesters are experiencing a divide between those who want to work on consensus building versus those who would like to have majority "winner takes all" vote. The current issue is about how to vote for a massive public works program funded by ceasing America's overseas military operations.

Wall Street Protest Visits Washington Sq. - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
The Wall St. protests are spreading, both in location and in numbers. Recently, over 1,000 people marched in Washington Square (financial district), and although police were trying to steer the crowds, the protestors did not follow them. The police did not resist, and the march remained conflict-free. This public movement against inequalities is truly growing.

Occupy Wall Street Shows Muscle, Raises $300K - ABC News - 0 views

  •
This article talks about how despite the Occupy Wall Street movement being relatively disjointed and lacking a single rallying point, it has gained huge success both domestically and worldwide. They have occupied a park just off of Wall Street for nearly a month now, and they are receiving massive amounts of donations. Monetarily, they have raised $300 thousand.
  •
This is a great article. The funniest part was about the packages of swimming goggles and wool that the protesters receive. While it is annoying that the protesters can't seem to make some sort of agreement, this is inherent in a LARGE group of young, politically charged citizens. I wouldn't say it's completely hopeless though, for they've already managed to draft a constitution. I'm glad Obama supports them too.

Think Occupy Wall St. is a phase? You don't get it - CNN.com - 2 views

  •
This article attempts to break down the Occupy Wall St. movement. Douglas Rushkoff hits on the important point that the 21st century media is not making it easy for the protestors to share unified thoughts because the media itself is not unified.
  •
The article points out that "Occupy Wall Street is meant more as a way of life through contagion, creates as many questions as it answers, aims to force a reconsideration of the way the nation does business and offers hope to those of us who previously felt alone in our belief that the current economic system is broken." I think that this statement is true in that Occupy Wall Street offers hope to people and an outlet to voice their unhappiness with capitalism; however, I fail to see the solutions put forth by the protests. One of the appeals to the movement is that there is not a clear leader and it was mostly organized on Facebook and Twitter. And although technology started the movement it also may pose as a challenge, because it becomes more complicated for people to understand what "the end goal" is.

Occupy Wall Street Spreads, Turns Violent - 2 views

As OWS gains traction, it governs more and more support overseas, as similar movements spring up in many parts of Asia and turn violent in Rome.

It is interesting how there was a sign saying "Karl Marx was wrong". Protesters are upset at the rich for not sharing the wealth. The occupy Wall Street movement has taken up across the U.S. I saw signs and protesters in Walla Walla Washington and in Chicago advocating for more people to join the movement and unite against the upper class. It is also interesting how it is a time of major unrest and discontent with capitalism not only in the United States, but also in Rome and across the globe.

There was a huge protest in New Haven at Yale while I was there this week. They were chanting "We are the 99 percent." http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,2094925,00.html These photos go with Jenna's point that these movements are all across the globe.

Occupy San Fransisco's FB page. Interesting to see what people are saying.

I think the first part of this article - the part about the protesters not being organized and clear - raises an interesting questions. Should protesters necessarily have a plan for the path forward, or is their job merely to raise questions and display unhappiness with situations?

Hiring More Cops is Not the Answer - 0 views

This article was pretty interesting to read from Reason Magazine, a libertarian magazine. While I do not agree with the idea that a lower police force is beneficial to the society, the article does do a good job of pointing out instances where spending has gone wrong. In regards to the article's final paragraph, while most people do follow the law without having a police officer on every street corner, this does not prove any correlation between a lack of a police force and lower crime, like the article puts forth.

A nation in tears: Thailand wakes up for the first time in 70 years without its father - 3 views

  •
As dawn broke, the streets were awash with grief as the reality of the Thursday evening passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej began to set in. The tide of pink and yellow, worn as a show of support for his majesty, has now made way for a sea of black.

The people of Thailand lost their national father figure on Friday. This king has ruled for 70 years, so most of the Thai people have lived with only this one king. The successor has yet to be announced. The government is asking the Thai people to mourn for a whole year, showing how loyal the Thai people were to their king, no matter what he has done for the country.
